I've now gone through and checked my other discs from that period, but thankfully they seem okay.
That sucks. Hopefully you get a replacement.

All the more reason it should be a cheapie.

I don't care how good it is, it's hard to justify $60 for a half-hour film. I'm used to paying $10-12 for two-hour films. Even feature-length Criterions are quite the mental adjustment.

It's also the only Criterion I can recall ever seeing on Amazon at MSRP.
Who is paying $60 for it? That is $20 more than the MSRP. You say you are used to paying $10-12 for blue. Well, sometimes certain things cost more. In this case it is definitely a case where the quality is so good, it is worth the higher price.

I was going through Metacritic and I found Janus is releasing Abbas Kiarostami's last film, the experimental anthology film 24 Frames, next month. Looks like this will join the Collection later in the year.

And Night and Fog will always be an important film. Better to spend $40 on it than something like Tiny Furniture or whatever cheesy movie horror film that just went out-of-print.

Umm ... at Criterion itself, it's $32. A great film, a 100 minute documentary, and other extras -- for $32 and there's a complaint? Really? Have you ever seen this film?

I have a region free player. I just find it ridiculous that titles like the recent 4k restoration of Ran or Kind Hearts and Coronets sit in license limbo and get no Region A release simply because of Lionsgate/Studiocanals failed studiocanal collection attempt.. I was simply venting my frustration that such a large library of important films can only be purchased by going region free and hoping Criterion is making an attempt to get them back.

$40 US is $53 AU, and that's without getting it into the country.

I haven't, which is another reason to be nervous about dropping so much coin on it.

Interesting. . .

The Metrograph in NYC is having a DCP screening of SALESMAN on January 26th. Janus is listed in the description. Perhaps a Blu for this is on the way.

I suspect this will be another 4K remaster.

That's definitely my plan for now, at least, but that does preclude watching it.

Night and Fog is about 30 minutes and I couldn't wait for it to be over. I like art films as much as the next CC fan, but Resnais comes off as bogus to me.

I'd much rather watch Richard Widmark's courtroom presentation about the horrors of Nazi Germany in Judgment at Nuremberg for something short and effective on the topic.

Hope this is true. Asghar Farhadi is one of my favorite working directors at the moment. I have loved every film of his that I've seen so far, A Separation, The Past, About Elly, most recently, The Salesman. These films are all worth checking out.

EDIT: Just realized you're referring to the Maysles doc... whoops. I guess an upgrade from the DVD is not that crazy.

Awesome! Thanks for the info!!

Has it changed enough that Warner Bros. would license 2001: A Space Odyssey to Criterion?

I doubt it. I feel like there's films (like this one) that some studios would never license out.

I'd like them to. It was once a Criterion title but it was on Laserdisc. WB did license Barry Lyndon to Criterion, even though I don't see them doing the same with 2001, them licensing Barry Lyndon could be a sign that things are changing
