Watched Criss Cross this morning. Lancaster is appealing as ever, De Carlo is one of the peculiar femme fatales, and Duryea is confirms his go-to position as the slimy antagonist. Plus it's just superbly made, with some really inspiring camerawork. Hope Criterion gets this excellent noir at some point.

The Seventh Victim and Isle of the Dead were the two I liked the most, and Curse is the one I most want to see that I've not yet. There was a Lewton retro near me a couple months ago, and I made it to several, but I had to skip the Curse.../Ghost Ship double as well as The Bad and the Beautiful/Bedlam double, much to my chagrin, as The Bad... has come up frequently in various places since then.
Ideally they would double Cat People with The Bad and the Beautiful since the Doom of the Cat Men sequence alludes to the Lewton formula and how it came to be.

It's a shame The Curse of the Cat People couldn't be included on the Criterion release of the original. We'll probably never get it on Blu-ray now. Will have to keep my DVR recording.

Why wouldn't it get its own release?

I'm actually hoping that Criterion is working on a Val Lewton box set. I haven't bought their release Of Cat People yet for that reason.

I bought the Laserdisc set when it first came out so the DVD set was a no-brainer. That LD set had the first official release of The Ghost Ship in many years due to legal matters and that added to the excitement for me. (Big fan of Richard Dix) I bought the first release of the DVD box set which had a different extra on Lewton. Thankfully, Criterion's release of Cat People had the later one by Scorsese I was missing.

If this thread has taught me anything in the last month or so, it's that I really need to catch up on my Val Lewton knowledge.

It's been a few years since I last watched a Val Lewton film. This thread has gotten me in the mood to revisit them. I need to try to watch one or two later tonight.

If Criterion's release of Cat People is a total tease and there are no forthcoming Lewton films, I am going to be very upset.

Come on, 7th Victim!

Yeah, I'm going to watch Cat People in a few. I've always loved that film.

ETA: Watched it again earlier and I still can't get over how beautiful a film it is. The lighting is wondrous. And Tourneur directs the heck out of this thing. Just lovely and engaging.

I got around to watching Godard's "Every Man for Himself". It's a relatively accessible film by Godard standards. It's an interesting combination of biting social commentary/satire and character study, with Godard's typically free form style achieving a sense of focus. There are numerous moments in this film that are truly hilarious, with characters revealing deep sexual fetishism in seemingly normal situations as a running theme. If you enjoy "Weekend", then I think "Every Man for Himself" will be up your alley, as it combines the clearly pissed off Godard from his more experimental films with the focus of some of his early films. As with the vast majority of Godard films, it's a love it or hate it affair, but I very much enjoyed it.

Has anyone read any Val Lewton novels? I want to check one out but they don't seem to be in circulation any more. No Bed of Her Own is like the only one that can be obtained from third party sellers on amazon (UK amazon is cheapest at £10.99). I might go for that.

I really wish Criterion would put out David Cronenberg's CRASH. I think it's his masterpiece. Can't believe it still hasn't been put out on BR.

NotLD is in this week’s top 10 selling BDs! Is this the first time a Criterion release managed to do this?

Love the Curse of the Cat People, Robert Wise's director debut, his use of shadows is amazing. The movie itself is great, its almost an fairytale like story told from the perspective of the daughter of Oliver Reed and Alice Moore (from Cat People), who get visits from an imaginary friend (or is it) wich is Irena.

Criterion did release Crash on laserdisc back in the 90's. Along with a featurette, two trailers and Cronenberg's preferred 1.66 framing, the true piece de resistance was an exclusive Cronenberg commentary; I'd like to think this will eventually get a Blu release as well.

I've always wondered if it was a coincidence or something else that led to Spader's film career going downhill a bit after "Crash". It's a brilliant film, but I wonder if there was hesitance to cast the guy from the "getting horned up by car wrecks" movie. There are very few actors with Spader's versatility. He played nice guys ("True Colors", "Bad Influence", "White Palace", "Dream Lover", "Critical Care"), yuppie scumbags ("Pretty in Pink", "Less than Zero", "Wolf"), down on their luck losers ("The Music of Chance"), psychopaths ("Two Days in the Valley", "The New Kids"), and men with taboo sexual fetishes ("Crash", "Secretary", "sex, lies, and videotape"). And he was incredibly effective in all of those roles. Great actor.

At least he's doing pretty well with The Blacklist now (Although I appreciate that is TV, not film.)

Anyone know if more Haneke is coming? I would love Caché and Funny Games.
