Chill out. Scottie is clearly re-doing it, and it's a work in progress.

Well how long has this been a 'work in progress' ?? Because it seems to have been like this for awhile..

I even overheard a conversation in there last week between a cashier and a customer wherein the employee was talking about how Amazon is crushing the other retailers. You can't expect to stick around if your prices on everything are 40% higher than Amazon. Maybe I should stock up on Blu-ray only digipacks and older releases that are in great condition next sale just in case, cause selecting the best copies in-store may not be a privilege for much longer.
I've never understood this either. I have a B&N really close and have no issues paying an extra 5-7 bucks to pick up a title in person, but the price differences are really insulting. It's as if they would rather sucker one person and make MSRP then sell 5 titles at a lower price and make a better overall profit. Surprised they've been around as long as they have.

Can anyone confirm the following easter egg for me on a US Criterion blu of Bottle Rocket? I'm pretty certain it's there, as it's on the UK blu, but just to be sure...

Go to the Anamorphic Test screen and press the blue button on your remote to see Kumar's audition tape (0:51).

I'm going through all 773 database entries, ensuring all of our keyword fields are accurately filled in, making sure all of the Master Movie IDs are properly formatted and complete, and double checking that the information listed in each entry is accurate as best as I can (without having all of the discs in my possession).

So I'm technically going through 1,546 entries, not to mention I'm also double checking Criterion's website for each release to see which entries have multiple films. For example: Stanley Kubrick's "The Killing" has "Killer's Kiss" as an extra, but it's not part of the main feature (hence why the release is listed as one entry in the database). I'm going to be spiking these titles out in the OP.

I'm also adding feature-length documentaries to the Master ID database because Criterion has included these documentaries as extras in their release (these won't be linked).

Not to mention, I'm also trying to compile a list of all the Eclipse releases to link in the OP, as well as every single Criterion DVD still in-print for the purposes of identifying potential upgrades.

...and I'm doing all this in my free time.

After a handful of plays, it just stopped working. but that was only a few years after buying it. it probably could have been chalked up to deficiencies in the manufacturing process like you said.
This exact DVD is also the only one I've ever had crap out. And I've only had one CD crap out (out of maybe 2k)--an 80s release of The Teardrop Explodes' Kilimanjaro.

That being said, promises of DVDs or any media lasting 100-200 years are total BS (including those gold "archival" CD-Rs). Fact is no one knows how long these things are going to last. And of course, the players still have to be around in 100 years as well.

he wants to know what Freddie Prinze Jr. titles are in the Criterion Collection and clearly, you are slowing his roll.

Let's pick it up, Scott.

I understand that, my friend. I didn't mean to sound crass. It's just a bit frustrating not having reference. I appreciate you are doing this in your free time and that it is a lot of work. My apologies for sounding like a douchebag.

Don't sweat it. Aside from announcing that I'm in the process of updating the OP, I haven't been too vocal about what I've been doing.

In a perfect world I'll be done with this in the next week or so.

You guys.

In other news, I rewatched The Piano Teacher tonight.

I wouldn't say I loved the film after seeing it for the first time last year. I will say that since that viewing, it's remained one of the most memorable films I have seen to date. Because I had such a strong desire to rewatch it recently, and because it wasn't available to stream anywhere, I committed myself to purchasing the Blu-ray, something I only do when I'm 100% certain I love a film and can see myself watching it again in the future.

To make a long story short, I'm happy I made this purchase, and I find this to be one of the best films made thus far this century. The film is incredibly difficult to watch at times, but the character of Erika is one of the most complex, multilayered characters in a film, that the film almost demands multiple viewings in order to attempt to figure her out. The chemistry between Huppert and Magimel is outstanding; it's no wonder they won Best Actor and Actress for their performances at Cannes. As for the actual Blu-ray, the new restoration is magnificent.

Svet puts it best in his review:

Quote:
The entire film looks very sharp and clean, boasting a healthy color palette with solid primaries and a very good range of slightly muted but natural nuances.
I can see Isabelle Huppert's performance going down as one of the best of all-time. It's really, really, really remarkable.

Criterion posted a pic of Mathieu Amalric in the closet today, so I'd expect The Grand Budapest Hotel sooner rather than later now. We knew it was coming in the pipeline, so that sort of shows that extras might be being worked on as of today (although it could be for something else entirely).

Working in the database is slow going. I was reminded of this yesterday morning. I thank you for all your hard work, Scottie.

We could easily take the information available on the site for granted, but it must be remembered that everything we see has been entered in by somebody who loves film. This work is done strictly on a volunteer basis. But the satisfaction that comes with time invested is very much worth it.
