I've never walked out on a movie either but I understand people that do, it's hard to spend 90+ mins with your feet in a puddle of soda watching The Adventures of Pluto Nash when you know you could be home watching 12 Angry Men or whatever..

Me neither; never walked out of a movie in the theater before, and I'm sure I never will. Unless I'm ever, uh, violently ill during a movie or something, lol, but that's never happened.

But anyways, the walking-out thing is kinda different at the Cannes Film Festival...it's more of a "making a statement" kinda thing when critics there do that, to help get negative buzz going about a film they didn't like that's in contention. That's how it appears to me, in any case.

If you are at a film festival watching a bad movie, the chances are that you are missing at least one good movie (and probably at least one good party), so there can be a reason to walk out.

The only time I ever walked out on a movie, it was a free sneak preview of "Prince of Persia", which was a surprise title. I hadn't planned to ever see it, but I figured I'd give it a chance since I was there... after about 10 minutes I realized I just wasn't in the mood for it and wasn't enjoying it. It wouldn't come close to cracking a list of worst movies I have ever seen in a theater, but I felt like I was wasting my time and I hadn't been there long enough to feel committed to staying, so I left. But generally speaking, if I am interested enough in something to go see it in a theater, I have already decided to set the time aside to watch it, and I will stick it out.

This would be too big of a month. I hope you're right, but I think it's too much existential eye candy for me to take.

But please, please, please let the announcements have one of them.

The only movie I ever walked out on...

1979's The Champ with Jon Voight and Ricky Schroder.

As a fan of the 30s version, I figured, what the hell but learned a lesson the hard way.

Pretty sure the only film I've ever given up on is The Party.

When I went to see Inland Empire I thought it was a 2 hour movie... I did not like it at all, in fact, watching it was like torture. I made it to the two hour mark, and, let's face it, no way can you tell in this film if it is about to end or not. So I thought: Might as well stick it out to the end. Should've done my homework

Jezebel (1938)
Now, Voyager (1942)
The Little Foxes (1941)
Marked Woman (1937)
The Cabin in the Cotton (1932)
Kid Galahad (1937)

Plenty of choices there to make a fine "Early Davis" collection.

I also think it's time for some more Barbara Stanwyck on blu-ray, and Criterion is the obvious choice to make this happen. First off, The Lady Eve upgrade is long overdue. And then there's a wide selection of Stanwyck films that have never had the treatment they deserve.

Few actresses possessed the range that Missy had; she shined in screwball comedies, historical dramas, Westerns, film-noir, melodrama, and she was one of the greats to emerge from the pre-code era. Her work is woefully underrepresented on blu-ray.

The Lady Eve
Stella Dallas
Baby Face
The Bitter Tea of General Yen (Sony's BD-R release really needs an upgrade!)
Ball of Fire
Night Nurse
East Side, West Side
Sorry, Wrong Number
The Miracle Woman
All I Desire

It is time that these two superlative talents receive the attention they deserve.
Those are some great lists. I would add for Bette Davis, The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex and The Letter, and for Barbara Stanwyck, Lady of Burlesque. I would also love to see a re-issue of Stanwyck's Remember the Night. The TCM release sold out way too fast for me.

As far as most hoped-for for a Criterion announcement today, that would definitely be The Lady Eve.

edit: I would also love to see an upgrade of The Furies. So many great movies ...

Some people over at criterion forum are speculating that The Wild Bunch could be coming due to a hint in a previous newsletter. I don't know if there is any validity to that but it would be an outstanding addition. My preference would be Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid as it has never been released on blu and Wild Bunch's current blu is pretty comprehensive. But any Peckinpah would be soooo welcome.

My preference would be for Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid too but I recently watched the Warner blu-ray of The Wild Bunch and the picture looked very scrubbed for a film of its vintage so I would welcome a Criterion release with a new scan.

Yup. I never allow myself to be defeated by a movie. Even if I have to sit there curled up in a ball, sobbing for two hours - I'm making those credits.

The most painful movie I watched recently (on blu-ray) was 'Wild Orchid'. My god. It. Was. Brutal. Just pure garbage. I had to watch it in ten minutes segments because I couldn't take any more than that in one sitting. Took me like three days.

I've walked out of a few bad movies. It's kind of liberating, like you're buying back an hour or so of your time back. I wouldn't walk out of a movie just because it was challenging my limits though. I only do it if occurs to me: is doing anything a better use of my time than finishing this movie?

The movies I've walked out of: Armageddon(15 minutes), Lucky Numbers, Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc, Pearl Harbor, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. There's a time gap there, because I stopped going to see literally every movie that came out so my impulse to run was curbed for about a decade.

That's my mindset as well. There have been some movies I've seen that have been pretty good but started slow and I wouldn't have realized how good the film actually is if I'd walked out after ten minutes.

I also feel like I could not qualify my opinion of a film if I haven't seen the whole thing. If I walked out of a film after 10-15 minutes with the excuse that "this movie is terrible" well, that would be a lie because I haven't seen the movie, just a ten-fifteen minute chunk of it. Even if the entire movie turned out to be horrible, at least I am qualified to state that it is horrible.

For some people who aren't into movies, if they choose to leave without seeing the whole thing, that's fine. But I think for cinephiles, it's important to take the bad with the good. It makes you appreciate the masterpieces all the more.

Great point. The reason I can speak so very eloquently about the sh***y garbage-ness of Wild Orchid is precisely because i've seen the whole thing

"My Brilliant Career" would be an odd release because Blue Underground released it on BD years ago, that disc is still in print, and I have to imagine anyone who loves the film enough to own it already picked up the BU disc since it's been on the market nearly 10 years. So far, the films Criterion has released double dips of have mostly been pretty high-profile titles, not more niche titles like this.

Just my way of rationalizing, hoping that clue was for "Carnal Knowledge".
