I'm sure many would appreciate the sacrifice if you bought that DVD. All kidding aside I'm pretty sure Criterion will upgrade that one and release Dersu Uzala as well, I would give it another year especially since they haven't lost the rights to Red Beard.

If Netflix is gonna work with Critetion on home video, I would also love a release of Beasts of No Nation and Mudbound!

"So, do I buy Dietrich & von Sternberg in Hollywood, or David Lean Directs Noël Coward?"

Eh, why not buy 'em both? You only live once, right??

Both, of course! But if I could only have one, it would be the Lean set without hesitation.

If my house was ever in the path of Godzilla and I had to flee the area, I would be taking the Josef von Sternberg set along with Fassbinder's BRD trilogy with me.

And of course the Mondo Vision Possession release. Oh and my Ocean Shores VHS of Wolf Devil Woman. Come to think of it, all my VHS tapes, they are rare and expensive to replace. And I can't leave all my Fassbinder releases just sitting there.

I'm gonna need Godzilla insurance.

The real dream for me would be Criterion releasing Evangelion (since Netflix has the rights now) but realistically I'd love to see them release Roma.

This is why I hate asking people here to narrow down options. The first two replies are always different.

That's funny, I'm in a similar situation. Red Beard is probably the most highly regarded Kurosawa film I've never seen - it's just never happened. And I've passed it up at least twice over the last few years on TCM, in hopes of a Criterion blind buy that I assume will be coming along any month. It may sound stupid; it probably is. But I'm not buying the DVD and I'm avoiding a classic film in hopes of a stunning first date with it on BD. I'll add that to my list for the psychiatrist.

I agree. There's a few that would fit in nicely in the collection.

The Meyerowitz Stories
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
The Other Side of the Wind (rumored to be coming from Criterion)
Imperial Dreams
First They Killed My Father

As someone who has been a Netflix member since LONG before there was even an idea of streaming, I feel guilty that there are so many good movies by them that I have not seen.

Anyways, bringing it back to Criterion, I'm trying to decide which titles to purchase. Obviously, there are upcoming ones which I really want. But I'm trying to figure out which ones which are already released, but I don't own, I should have. Hmm.

Jeez. I started looking at stuff, and realized that there were things I thought I had purchased and didn't! I need to begin to keep better records.

Well, anyways, picked up 24 Frames and Death in Venice.

Those should keep me going for a while.

There's a difference between hoarding and collecting, you should know that.

At this point all you sound like is a typical salty collector, that's the beans!

fwiw, I recall finding it a bit slow/dull, definitely not among my favorite Kurosawas. So obv another watch some day is in order for me, but I wouldn't be so worked up about it. Just keep on waiting for that blu-ray is probably the best plan.

Stray Dog and The Bad Sleep Well are holdouts as well. And, I thought I read somewhere they have reacquired the rights to Ran...or do I need to lay off of Grandpa's hooch?
