August 15th is always an exciting date because Criterion's November releases are usually wonderful.

Even though I recently bought the WAC DVD-R, I'd attempt backflips if we got a Criterion Blu-ray of The Letter.

This morning they tweeted a screenshot from Betty Blue and then deleted it.

Yes, indeed.

November is usually their last big slam-bang month for the year, as Dec. is usually light for them.

There's been several Novembers over the years where I bought every single release that month.

One Nov. (2012), gave us Pasolini's Trilogy of Life, Rashomon, Godard's Weekend, and Heaven's Gate.

One Nov. gave us Kurosawa's "Dreams", "One Eyed Jacks", "Punch Drunk Love", and "Lone Wolf and Cub" set.

Of course, last Nov. gave us the legendary Ingmar Bergman set.

Of course this provides no guarantee of a Blu-ray release, but fingers crossed.

The listing at Corinth Films confirms it's with Janus Films: http://corinthfilms.com/films/of-mice-and-men/

Surely a Criterion Blu is forthcoming?
Warning! That Corinth link contains serious spoilers. I imagine a lot of people have read the book (it was required reading for me in high school), but still ...

The Corinth link also lists it as being from the Criterion Collection and available formats as 35mm and retail DVD. No mention of an HD transfer.

Kanopy also shows it as being from Criterion, but again hard to tell if this is HD or not.

Curious question but does anyone think Criterion would release The Fearless Vampire Killers?

They've done other Polanski films, and I'm a bit shocked this one hasn't made it to blu-ray in the states or UK.

Is there something going on with the rights, or another possible reason it's unreleased?

I picked up the Criterion blu ray for Don't Look Now the other day and what a great transfer!

I almost blind bought Klute but decided I wanted to give it a watch first. I've been having some excellent luck with blind buys the past few months (knock on wood), though those blind buys I've made recently I was pretty sure I would like them anyway. I was bummed since Klute wasn't available on amazon prime instant video but I just took a look and it's available again! I'm gonna give it a watch tonight.

It's smart to give movies a watch first if you're unsure, but I highly recommend Klute to anyone who is a fan of 70s thrillers. It's not a fast paced thriller, it's as much a character study as a murder mystery, but it's absolutely dripping with atmosphere. It's the type of movie that makes me love that era of filmmaking.

I'm a fan of 70s thrillers and that era of filmmaking in particular, yet hated Klute.

I'm happy to give it another look though, my memory of it is foggy and fragmented at best.

It might be as simple as Polanski isn't a fan of the film, so he doesn't want to participate in extras. That would be a strike against a Criterion release (though why it never got a R1 DVD release, I can't explain).

I felt the same way. I enjoyed the atmosphere and I thought Fonda's performance was great but I didn't care for the film as a whole whatsoever.

Your quote right here made me even more stoked to watch it since the 70s are my favorite decade for film.....and possibly music!

I also agree with what you said about giving films a watch first. I'm not a big blind buyer at all unless I have a pretty good feeling that I will like it. The past few months has been the most blind buying I've ever done.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned it...but they're up! ALL ABOUT EVE, NOW VOYAGER, BETTY BLUE, COLD WAR, and THE DAYTRIPPERS.

Most excited for the two Davis flicks.

An accurate precis. The murder mystery is inconsequential because Klute is really all about Bree Daniels, the prostitute with dreams of breaking into legitimate modeling, played with insight and bravado by Jane Fonda. It is an essential film from the 70s that shows why that decade was the acme of film-making, back when Hollywood produced movies for audiences older than 12.

i'd also recommend buying They Shoot Horses, Don't They? from Kino, with another knockout performance by Fonda as a desperate show-biz wanna-be.

I am so freaking happy Cold War is getting a Blu-Ray release! Just watched back in April and thought it was lovely.

I believe Sweet and Lowdown is with Sony.

I have the Fox 2011 release of All About Eve. If I recall correctly, the PQ is excellent. Not sure if it's still available, but I don't see myself "upgrading." I'll wait until I read the reviews before making a decision.
