Resnais definitely was one of a kind. I first heard of him back in the late 90's when I was living in San Diego. The film critic Duncan Shepherd, who worked for the local periodical "The Reader", was his biggest fan and had given many of his previous films 4 or 5 star reviews. Shepherd had the kind of prose that would have made Frederick Douglass jealous. His reviews were incredibly eloquent, yet they could also be rather nasty if he didn't like the film. His scale went from 5 stars to a black dot he lovingly referred to as "Anitpathy". To say he gave out far more black dots than 5 stars is an understatement. Anyways, he loved the Coens, Clint Eastwood and Alain Resnais. So, I knew I was going to have to check this guy out. Marienbad was my first taste and it was delicious. Hiroshima didn't disappoint as well. Muriel is a blind buy, however, and I am looking forward to it's challenges. I also recently purchased Kino's release of Je T'aime, Je T'aime, another blind buy, and I plan on making it a double feature with Muriel. Hopefully my head doesn't expode!

I haven't gotten an email nor found anything on Crtierons various sites, but the thread just went up on the deals section by a poster who has gotten advance notice in the past.
Unfortunately, I'll have to pass if the Criterion site now collects sales tax for the socialist state of California.

They won't do the announcements tomorrow. Monday was Columbus Day. Anytime there is a national holiday on Monday, no matter how minor, they delay the announcements by one day. I've seen it happen for Columbus Day before...

They collect it now for MA, comrade! Pay up, and be happy. At least you get to spend the winter in a sunnier clime.

They do. I got charged last year. I'm most likely sitting this one out and wait for the B&N one to get that extra membership discount.

Gonna try, for the third sale in a row, to get the Hitchcock set.

Third times a charm?

Think I’m going to go with Klute, Paris Belongs to Us for the flash sale. Need one more title though. Can’t think of anything else to get. Grr.

I'm not familiar with Duncan Shepherd, but, ha, I like his style. Thanks for sharing. Je T'aime, Je T'aime and Muriel, or the Time of Return would make a great double feature. I loved Marienbad so much (I recently bought the Kino release) and that spurred me on to watch Muriel. I don't have Je T'aime, Je T'aime, but it's on my list now.

Muriel is challenging for sure, but so wonderful. I'll definitely be watching it a couple more times and even then I'm not sure if I'll be able to unravel it completely. I seem to be big on blind buys as of late too and I'm rarely disappointed. Enjoy your double feature.

It's going to be a small order for me this time around. There's just too many other sales happening and coming soon, not to mention Holiday shopping. I've got the following ready to go come 9am (Pacific):
- Polyester
- All That Heaven Allows
- Local Hero

Gonna grab a boxset this time. Trying to decide between the Koker trilogy, the Apu trilogy, and Bergman's Silence trilogy (the only one that wouldn't be a blind-buy).

Default Wish List Winnowing

Not only did I reach a 500 loyalty points threshold with the last sale, Criterion kicked in a $10 GC for my CC sub, so $60 in total to reduce the cost of the winnowing down my wish list. Always a tough call, but here’s what I’m thinking, after already picking up the Bergman set, Blue Velvet, Detour, House of Games, War & Peace this year.

Definitely:
Do The Right Thing
In A Lonely Place
The Vanishing

Probably:
Asphalt Jungle
Ugetsu

Possibly (one from this group):
Klute
Notorious
Macbeth
Repulsion

Wishing:
Cold War
Matewan
The Story of Temple Drake

Off topic, but is there a reason why there are almost no South Korean films in the collection?

Just a reminder that the flash sale only works for in-stock items. There's no discount for pre-orders.

The Ice Storm
My Darling Clementine

Wow, that was completely painless. Smoothest checkout I've had yet via Criterion's online site.
