Default Annie Remake Starring Willow Smith

Hollywood has been remaking movies since its inception. It's nothing new, but everyone makes it out like it is. It's not that uncommon, and there are literally hundreds of movies released a year that are original ideas, but you don't focus on that, you focus on the remakes and sequels instead. That's the problem.

If you want original films, support the original ideas and independent cinema. That's the best way to get the word out. Enjoy those films, and you'll be a lot happier and notice how many original ideas come out a year.

People aren't happy unless they have something to complain about.

Like Walt said plenty of other films come out, but those of you never pay attention to that. And if you do you end up calling it stupid for what it was. People are just never happy unless they're miserable.

If you don't like remakes, the best thing you could do is not talk about them. Because even in the end when you say Hollywood is useless, you're talking about them no matter what.

Sequels and remakes have been made since the beginning of cinema - it's nothing new. It did not start in the 1970s with Godfather 2 and Empire Strikes Back. Look back to the 1930s.

I'm not saying that Hollywood hasn't always remade films, but there's no denying they're doing it with much more frequency now than at any other point in history -- at least, back then, remakes and sequels were in the minority of releases but now they make up the majority. And with this I'm not talking about indie cinema, but just Hollywood releases - films made by the large studios. Indie cinema brings out some amazing gems - and so does Hollywood at times - and most releases are either original or a twist on a clichéd idea.

Articles like this explain it much better than I ever could, but the signs are there; it's not that Hollywood can't make original films or have lost their way, like some suggest, but simply that they know there is already a fanbase for sequels and remakes, so they're more guaranteed to make money. I don't blame them because I'd do the same in their position, but it does get quite frustrating when people choose to ignore or dismiss it.

Also, I'd just like to add that I'm not someone who thinks a remake takes anything away from the original - it doesn't affect my viewing of the original at all and, if it turns out to be good, it's a win-win situation. And I'm sorry for taking this thread so far off the rails, too.

Gluck will revise a script previously written by Emma Thompson and Aline Brosh McKenna. Sony is eyeing a late fall production start for an anticipated release in 2014.
...THAT Emma Thompson? The vanity-producer of Nanny McPhee?

I agree: Gluck, cut your losses. I'm more worried about her than I am about Smith & Dynasty, Inc.
I have a feeling I already know who's playing Miss Hannigan, as if her hamming it up in MIB3 wasn't enough.

BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD Star Quvenzhané Wallis in Consideration to Lead Will Gluck’s ANNIE Remake

Though it was only a few weeks ago that we learned that Willow Smith was no longer going to be starring in the Will Smith and Jay-Z-produced musical remake of Annie, it appears that director Will Gluck (Friends with Benefits) already has his sights set on a pretty big get to lead the film. EW reports that Beasts of the Southern Wild star (and Best Actress nominee) Quvenzhané Wallis is apparently in consideration to star in the redo, though the magazine cautions that Gluck and the producers have yet to make any firm casting decisions. Hit the jump for more.

Though EW makes sure to note that nothing is firm, I actually think Wallis is an inspired choice to lead the musical. This would be a major leap for the 9-year-old actress who made her film debut with the stunning Beasts, and I’m inclined to believe that she just might be keen on taking the gig given her penchant for dancing at recent awards ceremonies. In addition to being flat-out adorable, Wallis showed considerable promise with her work in the Sundance indie and I’m interested to see how her career blossoms from here.

One hopes that her parents and handlers will ensure that the girl’s childhood isn’t sacrificed for an acting career. We should hear more with regards to the Annie adaptation soon, as the goal is to start production later this year for a fall 2014 release.

I love musicals, and I've always liked Annie, so I was staying optimistic. This trailer sneak peek does not impress me though. Cameron Diaz is no Carol Burnett, that's for sure. But I'll see it with an open mind. I am still hoping for it to be good.

At least it sounds like the songs stuck to the original style. I was sure Jay Z was gonna make it a hip-hop Annie, like that Hard Knock Life remake.

+1 to the whole post

my expectations are low to none so I'd be surprised if they didn't meet them

If there isn't at least one scene of her flexing her muscles I will be severely disappointed.

I thought it was hilarious how they were trying to explain the difference between this Annie and the original movie. "Another difference is this Annie has street smarts"

Ummm the original Annie was street smart too the whole Orphan thing.

It looks okay, but holy crap Cameron Diaz is awful in this.

p.s. can we get a thread title change? Willow Smith has not been involved in this for like two years now.

How does Diaz keep getting work. Her last decent performance was in the late 90's
