Hooray for ridiculous horror films with good laughs and okay but not great transfers! This movie sure has grown on me a lot since the first time I saw it, Bruce Campbell rocks!

Welcome! And to stay on topic, this movie is all sorts of awesome. Even if I don't like it quite as much as Evil Dead II..

I sure get great enjoyment out of this movie, I remember seeing it in the theater and how hard I laughed...However, I must admit that I personally find the Director's Cut far superior (especially the ending)...Not sure I'll ever understand why they did what they did, as the DC ending would've left the door wide open for yet another hilarious sequel...and since Ash awoke in a bleak future, it could've been such an incredible movie, with him leading the few remaining humans on the planet (if there were any) in a post-apocalyptic war against the deadites, and thus finally becoming the "KING" he deserved to be! Oh well, I'll be waiting for this one to be in its DC form before I buy...I may be waiting for quite a while...

For whatever reasons, I can't watch EDII. I thought it was nowhere near as good as the first. Really liked Army Of Darkness, though.

Interesting. I can see why you might prefer the first, but what is it you don't like about EDII? I love all three, but would probably rank them as follows:

Evil Dead II
Evil Dead
Army of Darkness

Maybe I was expecting more horror and less comedy? I've only watched it twice as a teen. Maybe I should give it one more try.

I can see that, particularly as a follow up to the first. Maybe it'd be worth another shot. I know there's been a lot of movies I've enjoyed much more on subsequent viewings knowing what to expect, particularly in terms of tone.

This film could never be as good as Evil Dead 2, but it's still frickin' awesome on it's own

Sorry if this is a repeat question but I own the Boomstick DVD edition and after reading the reviews on the Blu-ray, I'm convinced that (without seeing it) the Blu will be better than the DVD. Most of the reviews I've read said to stick with my DVD edition (Boom Stick) but after haven't seen AOD in a few years, before I got my HDTV, the DVD looks like shit. I think a cable TV broadcast would look better!

The 1.66:1 aspect ratio is damn near close to full frame and the PQ itself reminds me of VHS.

Is the Blu-ray REALLY that bad that it's not worth an upgrade?

I'm not too big on extras so as long as the Blu has the director's cut material either as a different version of the film or in the extras, I don't care as long as the PQ is better.
To those of you who own both, what do you think?

I just took my Boomstick Edition and put it in a three disc blu-ray case with the Army of Darkness blu-ray and there you have it, my very own Army of Darkness Ultimate Edition.

The Blu-Ray is fine. I don't know why people would say it was bad. It's not DNRed. Maybe a small amount of EE. Being a cheap film shot in the early '90s, it's only gonna look so good unless Universal really gives it the deluxe treatment, which they won't. Maybe people were more mad that it only has two negligible extras. Until/unless something better is ever available, I'm fine with it.

There we are. There's nothing 'small' about it.

A recycled HD DVD transfer, that wasn't great in the first place.

Agreed. It's not an atrocity or anything, but slapping some EE and additional scratch repair on an old master isn't worth a lot of praise.

Besides, it's the US theatrical cut. I know people dig that, but I'll just hang onto my MGM HK DVD until somebody's offering the Director's Cut on BD.

It's actually a lot worse than the HD-DVD, the HD-DVD still has the EE, but it has a lot less DNR.

The Blu-ray is mediocre and does not reflect how good the film could look on the medium. They used a poor film element for the transfer and then ruined it with unnecessary processing to cover that fact up.

Do you have any examples of the DNR? I feel like I'm quite sensitive to DNR (I had to get rid of Dark City because it bothered me so much), and I can see it in, say, the caps the site has of Animal House, but I don't really see any here. Just EE.
