Default Study: Early Adopters are Arrogant Jerks

Early Gadget Buyers are Arrogant, says Study

Quote:
Early adopters of technological gadgets tend to be assertive and show good leadership skills but are also often guilty of arrogance, according to a study.

A survey of 25,000 Americans conducted by internet ad research firm Mindset Media and Nielsen Online found that avid technology buyers scored well in personality traits such as leadership, dynamism and assertiveness, but low in modesty.

"If you look at those with qualities of a modern leader, they're often forward-facing and interested in what's next," Sarah Welch, lead researcher at Mindset, told Reuters. "And those who are really assertive are the types to grab life by the horn, so it also makes sense that when they see something they want or like, they go straight for it."

The study rated respondents from one to five in 20 personality traits, including openness, creativity, self esteem and spontaneity, with a high score of representing the biggest intensity of the trait.

A low level of modesty also correlated with "badge buying," or the tendency to purchase luxury brands. Such early adopters can be perceived as arrogant or conceited by others, Welch said.

"So there's an element of pride in being able to have the latest and greatest, not just in the realm of technology, but in all other areas."

In a study earlier this year, Mindset found that people who bought Apple Inc.'s Macintosh computers to be more liberal and open-minded, but also exhibiting traits of superiority.
Personally, I agree 100%, we really are jerks, and if we're not early adopters anymore, we used to be, and we were jerks then

We're elistist, and demanding, and willing to spend big bucks for incremental quality improvements.

Of course we're arrogant!

But, nothing innovative would ever get to market without us.

I chose the correct format, and I feel proud that I made an informed decision. I don't think that makes me arrogant though.

Yes. I have done that. But not likely I was an EARLY EARLY adopter. More like a late adopter. October of 07, researching since March. What does that make me? Midrange?

Arrogant ? Me ? Never ! Of course they will say we are arrogant ! Anyone who has been in to high end audio/video shit has doned that label. Of course this is flung at us by the folks who watch burned movies on a $ 39.00 DVD player through an real cheap out of the box sound system. It is a quiet inner knowing that we have the best and that is it. I don't drive a fancy car because I choose to spend my money elswhere. So , I own my car to make more room for upgrades

What if your purpose in being an "early adopter" is your own enjoyment, not prestige and status? I love my equipment, but I couldn't care less what other people think of it. That's why I don't list my components in my profile.

I know I'm an *******, but I don't think it has any bearing on my purchasing habits. I tend to see myself as below-average in most ways, I just have an enthusiasm for technology.

I look at like this; We have an education and a good paying job so we can afford to buy some toys every now and then.

You know, it's really very irritating just how many people will make fun of you if you actually care about picture quality. People are always offering me burned movies, and I'll decline, because if I haven't seen it yet, it would spoil it for me to see it in bad PQ; and then they get pissed off and call me a snob. Watching movies is my hobby, and I want to have the most enjoyable experience possible, within reasonable bounds; I just don't understand how people can see this as a defect.

Huh? That's a very interesting (unsubstantiated) generalization. That's nonsense.

I take exception to that study. If anything, we are ELITE SCHMUCKS. I miss being an elite schmuck. I say we turn over that hate speech and demand we be called elite schmucks!

Default So Nyeah...

My time is far too valuable to waste it on reading the results of this incredibly flawed survey. The reason it's flawed is it wasn't conducted by elitist jerks like us.
