Word is Sony will eventually stop producing the BVM-X300s

and replace with these…..https://www.newsshooter.com/2018/09/...itor-ibc-2018/ .

The change in display type should mitigate previous problems with burn-in and premature aging -> dimming.

Not to be overly grand, but although these Barcelona v. Real Madrid matches may be relatively unknown in large parts of the U.S., they are HUGE in terms of viewing audience in the rest of the world. Some years they’re very exciting, other years boring and defensively tactical, but every year they showcase the absolutely outstanding passing, trapping, and dribbling skills of some of the best players in the world and that in itself can make them a worthwhile watch.

It still boggles my mind when I see one of these guys pass a ball 50 yards or so down the field and another player deftly bring it off his chest or perfectly trap it on a ground effortlessly and then turn on a dime to proceed forward.

The cities added in early 2019 are Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, and San Jose in California, and Las Vegas, Nashville, and Orlando.

AT&T described its 5G Evolution as rolling out to “over 400 U.S. cities throughout 2018, upgrading select towers with wireless technologies that will benefit both late-stage 4G/LTE users and early 5G adopters,” with 5G Evolution technology nationwide by mid-2019. AT&T said its “5G wireless network is backed by fiber cabling capable of reaching 18 million customers now, and 22 million customers by mid-2019.”

Default Cambridge UHD Blu-ray player & Dolby Vision with MEL & HDR10+

"Hello xxxxxx,

These are all the things that have been confirmed, while there may be more:

1. HDR10+ support
2. Supports Sony TV Dolby Vision
3. Bug fixes
4. HDMI IN supports Dolby Vision
5. Add 3 Aspect Ratio modes "21:9 Movable, 21:9 Fixed and 21:9 Cropped"

If you ever have any other questions or concerns in the future, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Thank you and we wish you the best with your future listening.

Best Regards," [Cambridge Audio]
https://www.avsforum.com/forum/149-b...l#post56926180

The Cambridge CXUHD is a customized Oppo UDP-203 UHD Blu-ray player.
Apparently, Oppo is also "exploring the feasibility of bringing hdr10+ within the next few firmware updates."
https://twitter.com/OPPODIGITAL/stat...78835821834240
https://www.avsforum.com/forum/465-h...l#post55533420

The Cambridge CXUHD will support Sony TV Dolby Vision, i.e. Dolby Vision with MEL (Minimal Enhancement Layer) apparently, which is already supported by Oppo.

"For Dolby Vision profile 7: Base layer/enhancement layer full alignment is required, as documented in Blu-ray Disc Association Specifications." [Dolby]*
https://www.dolby.com/us/en/technolo...les-levels.pdf

dual layer Dolby Vision (i.e. Dolby Vision Profile 7 with base layer & Full Enhancement Layer) AV file stored on UHD Blu-ray disc > UHD Blu-ray player: decoding of the HEVC base layer video stream and the HEVC enhancement layer video stream > reassembling the video signal from the base layer image, the enhancement layer image and the metadata > Dolby Vision video signal >> HDMI >> Dolby Vision TV capable of simultaneously decoding two HEVC video streams (same profile for decoding in TV or in player)

"For Dolby Vision profile 7: The MEL can be used to minimize the processing requirements for the enhancement layer and thus ensure broader use among UltraHD Blu-ray SoCs." [Dolby]*

dual layer Dolby Vision AV file stored on UHD Blu-ray disc > UHD Blu-ray player: converting FEL to MEL (i.e. removing the HEVC video stream of the full enhancement layer) > decoding of the HEVC base layer video stream > reassembling the video signal from the base layer image and the metadata > Dolby Vision video signal >> HDMI >> Dolby Vision TV capable of only decoding one single HEVC video stream

Over the years on this and other Blu-ray.com threads, in order to increase accurate HDR awareness, I’ve referenced the cutting edge work of Sean, Craig, Jaclyn and Elizabeth in text and/or YouTube or Vimeo video clips too. This past week in L.A. they were officially honored…. http://stockguru.com/2018/10/26/dolb...ion-engineers/ .

The hyperlinks in that ^ article take one directly to their papers at no charge, even if one is not a SMPTE member.

Arrive early though, as good, close parking will probably be just as tight as that on the backlot of the Top Gun: Maverick movie set these days –

P.S. For those not attending and watching on TV, I don’t think this game is being broadcast in 4K HDR but keep an eye pealed for future games airing on DIRECTV delivering in that.

For those in need of some HDR jazz after tonight’s Navy football and Dodger’s games , or for those who just like seeing what HDR can do for music festivals/concerts (filmed in 8K with the latest RED Helium sensor) -

Default Even if you don't have a 4K UHD TV...

...you still have the audio selections on the UHD disk, which only require a decent sound system. Occasionally you'll also have additional language options.

That’s not to say I don’t disagree with how the thread carries on, but, whatever.

As someone who never really frequented this thread before since my tv didn’t have great HDR capabilities (even if the tone mapping was great), when I came in recently, the first thing I saw was literally several posts in a row by the same person, and none of it had anything to do with HDR. I see the argument that going off topic is beneficial for the survival of a thread, but that’s totally not true, at least from my experience. It’s actually a great way to dissuade newcomers from entering the conversation with their own thoughts and opinions. And that much was proven when I was basically met with the ‘you don’t like it, you don’t have to be here’ mentality. This is a thread, not an exclusionary club.

So no, I don’t think off-topic conversation allows threads to actually thrive. It only allows people who already have been posting in said thread to continue doing so because they’ve grown accustomed to it. So there’s a trade-off there… while the thread lives on through off-topic conversation, growth is stunted. I mean, the basic code of internet forums is stay on topic, and if something is off topic, find a thread where it WILL be on point. “But then this thread would die” doesn’t really hold a lot of water, at least in my opinion.

Think of it this way: Geoff also suggested that if I wanted to find relevant stuff regarding this HDR conversation, I could go back to the beginning of the thread and read from there. But again, having wandered into this thread and seeing nothing but off-topic spam, what incentive do I have to do that? All a newcomer like me is going to think is, “Oh, great, this is the kind of crap I have to wade through in order to find relevant info? No thanks.” Just another reason why I believe off-topic discourse is more of a detriment than anything. I’ve spent years moderating and administrating at other super busy forums and I’ve seen the same mentality applied to threads in those places. It’s just the slowest form of death for a thread, not a revitalization.

But alas, these are my opinions and mine alone, clearly. No hard feelings… as I said, don’t really want to upset the balance of things. I’ll keep my mouth shut as far as this thread is concerned from now on. If any of you are ever in upstate New York, hit me up and I’ll buy you a beer to make amends.
