Great. Now there'll be 50 million posts about how terrible Sony is for releasing this player and it not being upgraded by firmware to DV.

Don't care either way at this point. It's a great player and for $299 it will still beat the snot out of the Oppo all day long.

Guys, from a large company (I work for one) saying "we have no plans" means very little.

Its June before DV discs even hit, just give it some time.

Son of a... I thought I read you should get as close to 4:2:0 as possible, so I picked 4:2:2. Been doing that with BDs forever. I switched it to 4:4:4 though and had Deep Color on auto and loaded up some discs... massive difference. Not only is the color proper, but I am seeing 10bit color for the first time. Immediate difference. It also made the HDR and detail look a little better, and no I don't think that's a placebo at all. Everything I have written in this forum for months now suddenly makes me look like a dumbass. If I loved a lot of discs before I can't wait to see them now.

One reason I never tried stuff like 4:4:4 is because with all the talk of my TV being shit I just assumed my problem was low nits. Well, it's not. I was seeing a good HDR difference before and if my limited testing tonight is any judge it's even better now, plus the wide color difference is immediately obvious despite my set supposedly not benefiting from it despite being a 10bit panel. Not saying you guys with $3,000 TVs aren't seeing a better image, but man...

If you have a low-nits TV and think your image is washed out then check your settings. A triple 4 on the slots might be your ticket to UHD jackpot.
Just to restate what elwaylite said, you're actually getting 12 bit when you've got the player set to 4:4:4 with Deep Color on Auto. Having 12 bit displayed on 10 bit panels can cause some issues - banding, instability, etc.

Robert Zohn Big Big thank you for reporting to us regards DV.

Is it possible to find out if the Sony Ultra App will be forth-coming with a firmware update this year.

Thanks for the update and an absolutely idiotic choice on Sony's part.

Their new TV's have DV and their players do not.

Sony... Sony... Sony...

Hmmm. Think it may be time for Robert to start having a UHD Player shootout...

Is there a list of gear that might get a Dolby Vision update? I've heard it mentioned that Sony TVs with the X1 Extreme chip are likely, but what about Samsung and Philips models?

I know DV has a much higher potential, but is it more beneficial with TVs that have lower than 1000 nits peak brightness than HDR10? As it maps on a scene-by-scene basis and not a feature length basis like HDR10?

Yes, only those models with the X1 Extreme processor will get the Dolby Vision update. Last year's Z9D, and this year's 930E, 940E, and A1E.

As for players, the only ones confirmed to get Dolby Vision are the Oppo 203/205, LG UP970, and Philips BDP7502.

I dunno about "much higher" seeing as it uses the same transfer function at its core as HDR10 does, although it should provide higher bit depth (less banding) than HDR10.

But yes, the biggest USP of Dolby's format is that it has customised data embedded into the signal which will provide a much more sympathic mapping of the image to the target display, which at the moment appears to be FAR more beneficial to <1000-nit displays than the higher specced ones. Time will tell though, I can't wait for people to start testing DV vs HDR10 on the higher end Sony LCDs.

I thought someone else said Deep Color has to be on auto for 10bit though? Also auto doesn't mean it's on necessarily. I'll do some comparisons later though with Deep Color on auto and off but keeping the 4:4:4 setting.

If I have to choose between 12bit downcoverted or 8bit though I know which one I'm choosing, based on last night's tests.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner!

You're absolutely right that the consensus was always to have the output be as close to the native encoded signal as possible, but with the usage of 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 making SUCH a difference to the bandwidth of a 4K signal (along with the bit-depth) it seems to have become a much more complicated issue re: how the manufacturers are implementing the extended bit depth of UHD on their players.

Yep. If I use 8-bit 4:4:4 on my Panasonic then it's automatically converted into SDR 709, whereas the 12-bit 4:2:2 output allows the SDR 2020 signal.

Anyone with a Sony XBR55X900C suggest turning that Deep Color to Auto?

Too much conflicting information. I'll wait for an "official" statement.

I think that person said they just prefer the image with Deep Color on Auto. They didn't provide any evidence like elwaylite. I believe elwaylite's picture is showing the info that his AVR is displaying with Deep Color on.

Choosing between 12 bit and 8 bit is a no brainer, obviously. Ideally, you'd get 10 bit and 4:4:4, though.

Exactly! No one actually knows what Sony is going to do. And for those of you putting your faith into what a customer service rep said, good luck with that.

And I had someone from Sony tell me that they were, so none of us actually know what Sony is going to do. And we can't rely on what some customer service rep tells us. I've been in this industry for over 20 years, and one thing I know for sure is that these companies are going to do whatever they want, and us consumers are just going to have to deal with it.

Guys, Robert is a dealer, little different than a customer service rep...

And like I said, no current plans at a big company can mean several things. It makes no sense to me that their 2016 flagship, as well as 2017 displays will get it and their new players wont.
