This Sony UBP-X800 Ultra HD Blu-ray player with a list price of $299.99 is really around $250 after one receives their 2 free 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc movie titles. However, it’s my understanding that the 2 free 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc movie offer will expire on 6-30-17.
Possible after 6-30-17, Sony might not offer another free movie offer, and instead maybe this Blu-ray player will receive a $50 price drop at some retail stores and mail order companies (that is a theory only). Most likely, the Sony UBP-X800 will drop in price to around $199.99 by the fourth quarter 2017 Christmas season to clear out inventory. Sometime in 2018 if Sony still decides to support the format, we should see a second-generation 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. |

My Denon AVR doesn't like to report the bit depth with certain signals, but with Deep Color off on the Sony it was still passing a BT.2020 signal.

There is a strong possibility that the Sony UBP-X800 might never get Dolby Vision. That is one of the reasons I went with the more expensive price locked OPPO UDP-203 back in December 2016 (Dolby Vision was promised and delivered).
I am strongly interested in this Sony UBP-X800 for a second room like a bedroom. However, I might wait until Sony releases a second generation standalone 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player, which should have Dolby Vision. Most likely, most and possible all third generation 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players from every company will offer Dolby Vision feature over HDMI 2.0b or HDMI 2.1. Some OPPO UDP-203 and UDP-205 owners are upset that they have absolutely no streaming features and they might never have streaming. The Sony UBP-X800 is attractive because of the streaming features and low price, but unattractive since it does not offer Dolby Vision. In an ideal world both OPPO and Sony would offer firmware updates with additional features that everyone wants (That is if the hardware is capably of offering the features). Sony sold a massive numbers of x800. What better ways for Sony to sell their new DV TV's to these massive amounts of peoples THAN firmware the x800 for DV.
SONY is Marketing Savy... Right? Disclaimer. Our family over the past few years have brought over 7 Sony Players. We even have 3 highend Sony 7200 Players(And their many Apps makes us happy) Yes. We have more than one room at home with TV's that needs new specialty Blu Players. Yeah. UnHeard of right. We also absolutely Love Love Love the new Big Big Sony 940e Last edited by E6AtmosVuduDV; 06-13-2017 at 09:06 PM. Reason: Completing post |

The two free 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs program ends on June 30th, and it might not be extended. Instead after June 30th a price reduction on the player might in theory occur. Now if Sony was able to keep this Blu-ray player price locked at $299 for the life of the player and if the hardware was capable of Dolby Vision, and if Sony wanted to they could start offering 2 free Dolby Vision Blu-ray discs with a purchase of the Blu-ray player. However I do not think this is going to happen. |

When I purchase a Blu-ray player I only go with OPPO, Sony, and Panasonic. Since over the years they have been the best 3 companies when it comes to quality and timely firmware updates. The question that needs to be asked is: Does the Sony UBP-X800 hardware have the ability to support Dolby Vision. If the answer to that question is yes. The second question is what is the cost in licensing fees to have Sony issue a firmware update that turns their Blu-ray player into one that becomes a HDMI 2.0b model with Dolby Vision instead of the existing HDMI 2.0a model without Dolby Vision. |

From June 2017 http://WWW.ENGATGET...
Note Last Sentence... Quote- Oppo's 4K Blu-ray players are the first with Dolby Vision HDR Now owners can download a software update to watch Dolby Vision UHD discs. Richard Lawler, 06.08.17 Late last year Oppo*promised*its Ultra HD Blu-ray players would eventually be the first with support for*Dolby Vision HDR*(in addition to the required HDR-10 spec that all Ultra HD Blu-ray players support), andnow a software update is available*to unlock the feature. It only works if you have Ultra HD Blu-ray discs made to support Dolby's flavor of HDR (plus a compatible TV), and, coincidentally, two just went on sale this week:*Despicable Me1 & 2. Later this year, they will be*joined*by movies including*The Fate of the Furiousand*Power Rangers,*as*more studios release Dolby Vision-ready discs, while Sony and LG have their own players on the way. UnQuote- "while Sony and LG have their own players on the way." And We all knows DAMN WELL that the LG UP970 will need a future DV Firmware to satisfy that "On the Way"!!!! Because treating their customers with that level of disdain could lead them to buy a player from another manufacturer. One that actually supports firmware updates for older models.

Engadget author probably just guessing. Why make a comment about being on the way, when one update was never announced, and the other is delayed until August?

I finally couldn not resist, I've ordered the Sony UBP-X800 which is arriving on Friday and a friend of mine is coming to collect my (frommFriday on, his) Samsung UBD K-8500. I really needed a better player, better built, not flimsy plastic, of better quality and more options and versatility, ah, and real info on screen.

Sony has been following the same format for years, flagship (BDP790, BDP7200, 1000ES??) get 2 year lifecycles, all other models are refreshed every year, Mar-Apr. There is no other device coming this year, you can bet on that. As stated a million times now, if the Sony display DV update comes and goes and the players get no love, doubt you are seeing it in this years model.
That would also likely mean the 1000ES gets replaced too next year, I just don't think Sony sits out DV with it in their displays, but that doesn't mean the players get it this year either. |

I think the earliest we would hear anything either way would be after the first Sony DV discs come out. Sony loves to show off their own stuff. |
