I believe the display/no display has been covered previously so we are .

Love all the info via the display on my Oppo UDP-203. Wish my Sony UBP-X800 and BDP-S6700 had one but they don't so I deal with it.

I just chuckle at the idea of "fumbling with the remote looking for the button." As if all us home theater nerds don't have important buttons memorized a week after getting new hardware. "Display" is the bottom right button on the X800, by the way.

It is indeed. Not quite memorised the rest of 'em though, and the little nubbin on the Play button has already worn down so I'm all at sea with the rest of the buttons in a dark room.

Same here. Every time I have purchased any new video display equipment, when I got to the remote, the first thing I would look for would be the display button, so I could remember the position of it. I hardly ever, EVER, depended on the front display window, since the display button would show so much more information.

OPPO 203 here. Lighted remote. problem solved.

Love the onboard front display.

You know when a disc hangs up, nothing shows up on the monitor, and you look at the display to see if the disc is playing, or is it a disc or player problem or tv problem, and you kick the disc out and start again, and by the third time you finally figure out the problem or the disc starts to play magically.

THAT'S why I have a display on my players. Thank you.

If you're having that many issues with playback, I think a front panel display is the least of your worries.

I have the display of my A/V receiver OFF all the time, I don't need it when listenning to music, just push on the remote the button for the source I'm listenning to and adjust volume by my taste, the same when watching a movie only that in the dark is even more convenient to have the display off, I find it distracting. I don't miss a display on the X-800.

I have no playback issues at all on my OPPO UDP-203. On my OPPO UDP-203 I have the LED display turned off in the menu since I do not want it on during movie watching in a dark room, however the LED display only comes on when I pause a movie, eject a movie, insert a movie, and other brief remote actions that turn on the LED display for a few seconds.

If Sony does every decide to make another 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player with a front LED display (UBP-X1000ES does have a front LED display), I hope it will have the option to disable it in the menu. We might never see a LED display again on a Blu-ray player from Sony, since its a cost cutting feature that is removed to keep the price of the player lower, just like removing the analog audio outputs is another cost cutting feature. One thing that turns me off on the Sony is no rear USB jack, therefore one will allows need to have a 1GB or larger USB stick plugged into the front of the player to use BD-LIVE. All these decisions are to make the price of the player cheaper for mainstream consumers. The OPPO UDP-203 will always be $549 since its price locked for the life of the player. The Sony UBP-X800 started off at $300, and is now around $268. In theory the Sony will soon sale in the 4rth quarter for $199.99. Also Sony sales many more players then OPPO. The big money is made on selling the 4K Ultra HD movies and not the players.

Am I the only one who thinks that the picture from this looks better on SDR instead of HDR?

I was just messing around. However, without more details and context specific to your situation, I can't see how SDR would look better than HDR. I'm sure someone could have their settings out of whack in certain scenarios, but in my comparison, HDR blows SDR out of the water.

I know what I'm doing. I'm not a novice at this and all my settings are correct but when the HDR is turned on it dulls the picture and cuts down the contrast. Then, when I turn it off, the picture brightens up and looks amazing. I've been dealing with this ever since I first bought the machine in February and also with the Samsung for a year before that so it can't be the Sony player.

I never said you were a novice. Never said you didn't know what you were doing. You threw out a question. I lobbed a response. Too many variables in the equation to be able to to even offer a legit response to this issue unfortunately. There's way too many people that know waaaay much more than me, a simple peasant. Hopefully someone will offer something plausible.

I know you didn't say I was a novice or that I didn't know what I was doing. Didn't mean to insinuate that, I just wanted to let you know that in advance. Like I said, all the settings are correct and I've been having this problem with HDR ever since I bought the Samsung last year. The picture with HDR turned off and played in SDR is WAY more dynamic and spectacular. I've checked everything and nothing I do to change it makes any difference. The TV input for the machine is set on Enhanced for the HDR setting but it still looks better on SDR. I don't know what else to do.

Picked this player up on sale a few weeks ago for $250. Yes, I already own the Oppo 203, but $250 was too good of a deal to pass up. Besides, I'm slowly upgrading the rest of mah TVs to 4K. The two films I picked were Underworld & Underworld: Blood Wars. I have tried this player out on my X800D, it delivers a very crisp PQ to the degree that it gives my 203 a run for it's money.

I see you have a TV that I also used to own: Sony 65HX929 (HX920 in Europe).

Really great TV, served its purpose well until it got replaced this year by a 65Z9D. Too bad the latter is a bit cheap looking on the outside compared to the stylish look of the HX929.
