I never had any issue with it, so I recommend it for universal people who don't mind not having Dolby Vision. It is so inexpensive that you can buy thousands of them, but why would you do that? Unless you are an eBay scalper and that Sony doesn't have anymore of them. Lol _____ From France (main menu): ![]() Those two small grey arrows in a circle below; it used to be the "Action Cam / YouTube Channel" logo. When clicking on it it says: "No Recommendation" ... it's a refresh loop. Gracenote was another logo, now with the "i" info sign to say that it will expire eventually. Sony they just follow the trends in apps, that's all. The main thing in apps is Netflix, Amazon, Vudu, Hulu, YouTube, ...stuff like that. And more important than apps with this player are ... SACD, DVD-Audio, Blu-ray UHD 4K HDR, Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray 1080p 2D playback capability in high resolution and in high definition and in ultra high definition. All of that plus all the apps for only $150 when it was on sale, and nicely built player too @ 8.5 pounds, how amazing is that! ...Brand new with full warrsnty and Sony support and professionally calibrated by a Sony video expert from Hollywood Sony studios! Just look @ Sony 4K UHD HDR transfers on their 4K Blu-ray discs, among the best in the movie business today! Play Blade Runner 2049 from the 4K BR disc in that Sony X800 4K player and tell me you are not impressed! Yes, it has apps, and it has habs too (6-pack) and it has brain. All that for only two bills! No wonder Oppo went the way of the dodo. I love Oppo, and I'm sad that they go, they were the best in their time and for a very long time too...fourteen years. Their Androids are amazing! That's where the money is. And now Panasonic 820 and 9000 are doing their dance on Hollywood boulevard. Times marches on, and with it us too. Last edited by LordoftheRings; 10-12-2018 at 09:35 PM. |

I own this player, very pleased with it since day 1. Probably most people don't use the streaming apps on it (I have all of them on my (smart) TV and Amazon streaming box, for example). Sucks for those who use them though.

I bought one and returned it after more reading. I have an older Denon HT receiver and I don't have an UHD TV. I do have a sony uhp-h1 player. I'd really like to have the 800. Many of the problems mentioned I've had or worked through with the uhp-h1.
So my question is, will I have more issues with the 800 since I don't have a current HT receiver and UHD TV? I'm not sure that its an upgrade from the H1. I've read that it's built on the same chassis and the only difference is UHD capability. I'd like to hear from anyone that's owned both. Thanks. |

I'm planning to dip into the 4k realm with a UHD player soon, as despite my screen only being a 3yr old 32" 1080p Insignia ATM (i'm on a rather tight budget with TVs, but I may explore a 4k unit in the future when ether the Insignia goes or I see one at a really good price), I can still experience the new UHD exclusive transfers without the so-so compression on ITunes via Apple.
How is the HDR-SDR conversion on the Sony UBP-X800? I've heard of some players looking washed out and murky with their SDR conversions, while the Sony players advertise advanced tone mapping stuff and top end SDR conversion. I can get a UBP for under $220 on Amazon as it fits my budget so that one sounds like the best bet unless i'm missing something. I've heard there's a modded region free version of the X800 for about $150 more, but I haven't heard much about their reliability nor any reports of firmware bricking. The other reason why i'm sticking to a UHD player instead of a UHD drive is because my Windows Lenovo Thinkcentre sporting a Intel I5, 16gbs ram, 1tb drive, while fine for standard BD playback and whatnot, isn't enough to play back UHD's due to the absurd PTA requirements in both hardware and software (in addition to still having limited and spotty playback depending on the title even with the right requirements met). |

Interesting. Did you notice the black crush issues on a 4k display with HDR or a standard HD display in SDR? I thought Sony's UHD players were prime since they're one of the pioneers for 4k tech and this advanced tone mapping thing i've heard about.
Can you give me a screen grab or two from ether the TV playing something with the X800? I'm curious as to how bad it really is. I can deal with black crush as my Insignia is pretty bright by default, but if the SDR conversion leads to horribly washed out colors and looks extremely dark, then I may go with Panasonic provided I can find one within my price range. |

I used to have a shitty HDR television so I tried the SDR conversion mode extensively. It's horrible. Also I don't know what you mean about tone-mapping, the television does that and not the player.
I have a good HDR television now so it's irrelevant to me. I'm just passing along what I learned. |

Ooooh... Wonder if that will help with my random disc issues. Ant-Man 2 stopped playing halfway through today, but played fine on my backup player. Was about to throw the X800 out the damn window but I'll see what this firmware does.

I sincerely hope a firmware comes down the pike that allows me to play Dunkirk... but alas, I doubt this will be it. Either way, I’m glad to still see support.

The Sony UBP-X800 is currently on the Target website for $299.99. If the Target retail stores have this player for around $89.98 that is a awesome bargain. The cheapest price last year on this model for a new one was around $149.99. This Sony has good build quality and plays DVD-AUDIO discs and has a Bluetooth option for wireless headphones. The only negative is that it does not have Dolby Vision HDR. If a person does not have a display with Dolby Vision HDR then the UBP-X800 is a better player to own. Those that do not need DVD-AUDIO playback and plan on soon purchasing a TV with Dolby Vision HDR, then the Sony UBP-X700 would be a better choice.
A couple family members have been using their two Sony UBP-X800 for almost one year and they play every optical disc flawlessly so far. |
