So will the Sony X800 be compatible with my NON HDR 4K LG TV?
The Phillips did not look right on my TV and I simply couldn't get the colors to look bright at all -- very subdued. I assumed it was the fact my TV was just plain 4K with no HDR. The specs for the new Sony say "HDR to SDR converter" but I'm not 100% sure that is referring to the issue I had with the Phillips. Thanks for any help! Sorry for asking again -- I'm up against a deadline! ![]() |

I just got mine, and all I can say is that after testing a few discs, I'm quite please with my purchase. It's a standalone UHD player at $300 that spits out great picture quality and sound. Can't ask for much more.

I bit the bullet and bought this on BestBuy.com for in-store pickup. I was waiting for the LG, but once Dolby Vision went software-wise, I decided to go with this. I have had a better track record with Sony than LG, so it's a no-brainer.
I'm excited to see what UHD can do! So far, I've got Crouching Tiger..., Ghostbusters 1 & 2, Suicide Squad, The Magnificent Seven, The Revenant, Arrival, and Labyrinth. I'm planning on going with The Revenant as my first spin, unless y'all recommend a different one. |

I also recommend Sully and The Martian: Director's Extended Cut. Sully is a straightforward docudrama, but its Dolby Atmos track is very effective and the HDR use is notable. The Martian is a good looking disc and the story is compelling, though not on the same level as the also somewhat tongue-in-cheek space epic The Right Stuff. |

I've read online it's from the same Series. Sony doesn't say that theirs is a 'Custom' one to their own specifications. Also Sony doesn't confirm if theirs can be future upgrade through a firmware update to Dolby Vision status. Sony is the only one who knows for sure when the times comes if they want to pay royalties or not to Dolby.
They'll monitor the future trends closely. Yes they use a Mediatek SoC from the same Series as other products, including their own other products, like top quality Sony 4K Dolby Vision TVs. _______ Question to the owners of the Sony 800 4K BR player: How is the overall operational response from the remote control? And how is the 3D BR performance? Are 4K BR discs looking good? |

Got my free movies code but the zone site only allows 10 digits, and the code is 12 digits. Someone at AVS has reported to them LOL.
I guess they still havent activated Amazon yet? I havent turned mine on since Friday. If they can get Amazon on with UHD/HDR and 24hz, Ill be very happy. |

A front display is nice. Some people listen to music and turn off their video display. The Sony UBP-X1000ES 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player is suppose to have a front display according to the pictures (also 2 channel analog audio outputs and RS-232). However it sounds like this model might be exclusive from custom installers. There is also the OPPO UDP-203 and Panasonic DMP-UB900 that has a front display. |

I hate players that have no front display. You can keep track of the time with the remote by pressing info/display but it's easier if it's just on the front. It is becoming way common for players to not have a front display. The Samsung K8500 was probably the best player with no front display because the info button was easy to press to see the time your at. I would imagine the Sony would have info on the remote to see the time your at in the movie or chapter your on.

Sure you can watch movies without it but it's nice to know the time length when watching something without having to pickup the remote just to see where. That would have never been accepted by people using VHS players. It's not to much to ask for from a manufacturer they just like making it as cheap as possible. People will now accept it to when in reality it's one less feature taken away and it just helps the manufacturer (less in production costs, cheaper price). There are some really good players out there without front displays, but it's becoming a bad trend of cheapening product. If your fine with that cool, some people like the front display feature and find it to serve a purpose, some don't. It doesn't mean it shouldn't be there, it should.

Well it's a $300 UHD player which many seem to believe looks and sounds just as good as their Oppos. If they cut a corner somewhere to help keep the price down, I don't mind that it was the display. |

For me, watching in a dark room, less lights the better.
