One thing I noticed:

If you watch a 480i DVD with the aspect ratio set to original (this is 4:3 content, I'm talking about), it gets squeezed in a bit. You'll have to manually select a different output resolution or 'auto' in order for it to display properly.

Weird.

What did you have the HDR setting on, Auto or Off?

I have the Samsung K8500 in the living room. Think I'll move it to the bedroom and get this for the main room. May sell the PS3's to help offset the costs for this one.

Robert, Did your Sony reps have any info on Dolby Vision for the Sony? I'm debating between this and the LG but the Sony is a no go without DV.

Anyone that picked up this player using it with a Samsung KS8000 series TV? I have to decide whether I am gonna swap out my K8500 for another or go to the Sony. I love Sony players and all my other blu players are Sony but I wanna just make sure it plays nice with my TV before I pony up the extra $$$(which the 2 free movies will help ease my mind about). I know that sounds weird but I know each set is different and I have read of other players having banding and other issues when paired to certain TV's. I read the Panasonic is even updating to add a 10-bit output mode so I am just hoping the X800 will play nicely with my Tv and receiver.

I've been away a bit. Happy to see this is out. Are they any real comparisons between its SDR conversion and the Panasonic's? I'll be ordering my player in less than a week and want the one with the best SDR conversion.

Ran into a few bumps yesterday streaming.

Sometimes when coming out of Netflix HDR, the app or player locked and caused a power cycle because home seemed not to work. I did figure out that hitting stop when watching the flick instead of return/back seemed to be reliable.

Amazon failed to load a couple of times and just gave a black screen. I then swapped over to the Panny 900 and Amazon worked fine, so not sure on that one either. PQ is very good on the apps.

55" KS and Sony UHD here. I've had it for a week and it's been great so far. Although I've been using it to play these UHD discs that have been in stores.

Miss Peregrine, Revenant, Billy Lynn, pacific rim all looked and played fantastic. Game of Thrones blu ray upscale I thought was also an improvement.

I have the Oppo 203 but I don't know why but the X800 intrigues me. I may check one out!

So I received my unit on Friday and I've had the weekend to run it through its paces. For comparison I had a Samsung 8500 before it. Compared to the 8500, the Sony is in my opinion, a worthwhile upgrade. The picture is noticeably better, and I don't think it's placebo. This is especially true with regular 1080p bluray. The picture is sharper and has less noise. And the fact that it doesn't have red smear is worth the upgrade in itself. The build quality is much better than the Samsung, plus I couldn't stand the damn curve of the 8500 lol. It's also much quieter than the 8500, and faster. The apps are a little better on the 8500, but the only ones that I really used were Netflix and Amazon, both of which are available on the Sony. The Amazon app doesn't do HDR yet, but it's not a big deal since the built Amazon app on my 65B6 does. Overall, I am extremely happy that I bought the Sony. I have a friend that is going to bring his Oppo over this week so we can do a comparison of the two. I highly recommend this unit, especially if you own the Samsung.

I can't imagine this to be a better player than the Panasonic UB900 and the Oppo 203. If anyone thinks so here please post your thoughts I am curious to see how it stands up vs what many consider to be the two best UHD BD players on the market. Sony though does make great products so if it really stands up well vs those two players it wouldn't surprise me at all.

I've been reading conflicting info on this, but does the Sony player have the Sony Ultra app? Also, can I ask where you purchased the player?

What kind of conflicting info if you don't mind me asking? As far as the ultra app, no it does not have it yet. And to answer the other poster above comparing it the the Panny and the Oppo, there are quite a few people saying that the Sony is on par with both as far as the picture goes. I'm comparing it to an Oppo this week. It's definitely better than the Samsung. And I ordered mine from Best Buy.

Ive seen a post about the player having the ultra app, which would be great for those 4k digital copies. I then read a post hours later stating that the player didn't have it. Hence, the confusion. I appreciate your reply and answer.

Will say that it was probably your post (and one in the K8500 thread) that went ahead and "pushed" me to get the Sony

I'm looking forward to playing my UHD blu ray's on a standalone player and not the XB1 S. Let me ask you though, as a fellow 55 inch KS owner (I'm a 55 inch KS8000)--are you able to use the Samsung Smart Remote with this player? I'm assuming not, since it's a Sony one, but man, it'd be a heck of a lot easier if I were able to (got my Samsung soundbar running and using the same Smart Remote, it cut down on potential frustration tremendously)

I've read that it doesn't have it and that's why I ended up not purchasing this player. I guess most of the people on this thread don't care about the Sony Ultra app and that's why we hardly hear any owners comment about it?
