I think I read something on AVS that someone who tested the player recommended leaving deep color on auto other wise the player didn't properly display 10 bit patterns or something along those lines. I turned deep color off on my K8500 but just left everything on auto on the Sony. Only thing I turned of was the BD audio mix.You can also try changing the color space and check out forcing 4:2:2 or 4:4:4. Also try bypassing any AVR if you are running through one just to eliminate all other possibilities.
Maybe it has something to do with Sony TVs possibly? Some kind of handshake problem?

Thankfully the Sony does have the option of turning the HDR off.
You had this issue with the Samsung player as well? That's strange. I'm using the Samsung player and I never had an issue with it (albeit with a Samsung TV.)

Have you tried any of these HDR demos? http://demo-uhd3d.com/categorie.php?tag=hdr

How do they look on your TV?

You guys are over complicating this.

HDR = good on calibrated display that does HDR well
HDR = bad on displays that do not do HDR well

Must be the Sony TV then. The HDR on the 4K TV itself is gorgeous but not when paired up with a 4K Blu-ray player.

The one guy has a Sony that does HDR well. I think it's more:

HDR = Dark and washed out if you're used to high backlight or vivid type settings.

Okay, so what's your advice on fixing the problem? How do I get the HDR to look the way it's supposed to look when playing a 4K HDR disc? And trust me, I DO know what it's supposed to look like and that's definitely not worse than a regular Blu-ray movie.

I haven't experienced a dark picture at all with my player and my Vizio either. Are you guys talking about 4K HDR via streaming? Because I think HDR has been known to be a little wonky with this player when streaming until the apps get updated more but I could be wrong.

Some people also really don't know how to use all their equipment. I'm not saying that's the case here, but it's possible. For example, it took me a moment to figure out when I first got this thing, why John Wick looked so much worse than it did when I was using my Xbox One S. Well, turns out I forgot an important setting on my Sony A/V receiver... you have to tell the receiver which units specifically are using the extended color range. I hadn't done that when setting up this player. Problem solved.

All too often I'm seeing a lot of comments about the TV and the player, but nobody questioning their receiver settings.

I don't use a receiver but I do know how to use my equipment and have all the settings set properly on both the 4K Blu-ray player and the 4K TV so it seems that the problem is Sony TVs. All you guys who have Vizios or Samsung TVs don't seem to have the same problem that I'm having with the 4K Blu-ray player.

Watched Arrival last night and another UHD disc down without a hitch. I really like this player so far.

I owned a 930C and one problem with it IMO, is it is not FALD. When you are in HDR and have an elevated backlight, it affects more of the screen.

So how does this player compare to the Oppo? Just wondering if I should sell my Oppo and go with this player.

My Oppo 203 was buggy as hell, so it doesn't even compare. Not sure on everything else because I sold it awhile back.

Having the same problem with my Oppo. Really think I might sell it and get this. I just want something that works without having to constantly screw with it lol.

Both the 900 Panny and X800(so far) have been reliable for me when it comes to disc playback. I had audio and video glitches with the 203 on every UHD disc I watched, and the tray would act up. Nothing like that on the X800 at this point.

Not sure what you mean by FALD but in your opinion, how would one go about fixing the problem?

Full Array Local Dimming. Put simply, better black levels than edge-lit panels.

Does it allow the audio to be transcoded from DTS-HD to DD+ or even DD? Xbox one s and Samsung 4k player does that. Would be good to know.

The solution is very simple. If you're having issues with light bleed or blooming, purchase some bias lights: https://www.biaslighting.com/product...nt=26801690759

^Those ones are especially very good. They will help increase the perceived contrast significantly and will eliminate any issues your panel may have as a result of being edge lit (there are edge lit panels that don't really have any issues to begin with.)

I'm not sure if that's your issue though. Your TV is pretty good and you certainly shouldn't be seeing washed out colors in HDR. Try adjusting some of the settings on the TV or the player itself.

What TV settings do you watch normal blu-rays on? I asked that of both you guys but no one has replied.

No. Sony's standalone players have never done this AFAIK.
