Thanks for the info but I just purchased this TV so I guess I have only so much control over the settings. It does have a Local Dimming setting but I already have that set to High.

When watching a regular Blu-ray on the X800, you can set the TV on any Picture Mode that you like best, whether it be Vivid, Standard, Custom, Cinema Pro or whatever, but when you play a 4K HDR disc, the TV automatically switches to the HDR mode and it doesn't let you change it. That's what's so frustrating.

Set HDR mode on the player to off rather than auto then you can adjust the settings on your TV to what you prefer.

Yeah, that's exactly what I've been doing. Any idea why it won't work like it should on Auto?

You're still not answering the question. We're trying to figure out why HDR looks dark and washed out to you, right? If you enjoy a much brighter viewing style than a calibrated television then that could be a reason. That's why I'm asking for your settings. If you typically watch with a backlight above 30-40%, with a higher color temp than warm2, with a lower gamma, etc. then it might explain why HDR looks disappointing to you. If not then it might be a settings or cable issue.

It's not that I prefer a much brighter viewing style than a calibrated television because my TV settings are just the way I want them to be and I am enjoying the gorgeous HDR picture on all of my inputs, except for HDMI 2 which is the input for the Blu-ray player, and those settings are also set for HDR. I just want to be able to watch HDR in all of it's glory when I play a 4K UltraHD Blu-ray disc, but instead I get a picture which is dull, washed out, colorless and no contrast whatsoever. I need to turn the HDR off in order to get the picture to look the way it's supposed to and the difference is like night and day. It's very sad indeed when a regular Blu-ray disc looks 100 times better than a 4K disc, and yes, I do know what HDR is supposed to look like and it's not that I'm used to a bright over saturated picture on the TV as you said might be the problem, because the settings on all of the inputs are all set to HDR standards.

I mean, you're still not telling me your normal settings...

I dunno man, if it's not you just disliking the look of HDR then it could be your cables (you need certain cables for HDR) or there might be a setting on your TV that activates HDR mode, like mine has. Outside of these three ideas there's not much popping to mind.

I just picked up this player today from Best Buy. Selling my Oppo. Just tested Everest out in 4K because I recently watched that on My Oppo 4K player that I am now going to sell. I think the Video and Audio quality is on par with the Oppo if not a bit better on the Sony. I don't really see much difference. The one thing I do find odd is that with this player I cant change My picture settings while the movie is playing I cant even mess with the HDR settings where on my previous players Samsung, Phillips and Oppo I could.

Yes actually I do. Does that make any difference? Is there any specific settings I should use in the player settings I pretty much left everything on Auto except for Deep Color which I turned off because I heard that never gets used.

I have a Sony X850D tv it does the same thing when I'm feeding it 4k HDR content. The tv reads the HDR metadata and switches automatically into HDR picture mode. The content on my TV does not look washed out, it looks much brighter and colorful the way HDR content is supposed to look. I'm assuming you already went into your 930D's input settings and set the HDMI input that is hooked up to the player to "Enhanced?" Maybe that is the issue? Your TV based on what I've seen and read should get much brighter than mine when you watch HDR content on it.

It doesn't look washed out on mine either it looks great I was just saying on previous players I was able to change the picture settings on my tv while the movie was playing like adjust the brightness in HDR mode for example and it wouldn't let me do that but I reset the player and all is good now. Yes I have the HDMI Setting on the TV switched to Enhanced. I don't even have my brightness turned all the way Up I have it at 30 I think out of like 60 and My Contrast at 95 out of 100. with a warm setting I like it more natural not blown out or over saturated that defeats the purpose of HDR in my opinion. If people wanted that turn on vivid setting and watch a bluray lol. Not sure why other people in this thread have had problems with it being washed out.

I have the Picture Mode on Custom
Brightness on 20
Contrast on 90
Color on 60
Sharpness on 75
Local Dimming on High
Color Tone on Neutral
All inputs on Enhanced
Plus I have HDR cables on all inputs.
Like the other guy said, as soon as you start to play a 4K HDR movie, the Picture Mode on the TV automatically switches to HDR and it won't let you make any changes.

Color 60, Sharpness 75 and Color Tone neutral are probably big changes from a calibrated standard. If the HDR mode is changing those to more advised values then that might be why it looks washed out to you.

Do you have the Sony XBR55930D? If that is the model you have I have the same model. I have the same TV and sharpness is way to high I have really good picture settings that took me months to calibrate to get just right on my set. I can PM you my settings if that will help also check out the AVS thread for the 930D that should also help they have settings on the first page that are really good starter settings and you can adjust from there to get it just right that is what I did. Hope that helps.

I've found those settings to be perfect for the picture to look the way I want it to look. The picture looks the most natural to me with those settings and is perfect for the HDR picture on the TV, ie deep blacks, nice whites, great contrast, nice sharp, clear picture and beautiful strong, not overly saturated colors. If HDR on the Blu-ray player is supposed to look just the opposite, with a murky, dull, colorless picture with practically no contrast, then I don't see the advantage of it. If the picture looks 100% better with the HDR turned off, then what's the point of it? If regular Blu-rays look 100 times better than a 4K HDR disc, then there's definitely something wrong. What settings do you suggest?

I have a Samsung TV which is set up using the rtings settings. For the heck of it, I just tried putting my SDR settings in torch mode and comparing the picture to the default HDR settings. HDR still didn't look too dim or washed out, so I doubt that's movielover1069's issue.

I've seen several people with Sony TV's claim their picture looks washed out in HDR mode (using various video sources.) The lower end models I could understand, but his is a pretty good model. Seems strange. I wonder if it's a defective set.

I'm beginning to think it might be a handshake issue between the Sony 4K player and the Sony TV. I've contacted Sony about the problem and all they tell me is to put the HDMI input on Enhanced, which it already is. In other words, they have no clue.
