When watching a regular Blu-ray on the X800, you can set the TV on any Picture Mode that you like best, whether it be Vivid, Standard, Custom, Cinema Pro or whatever, but when you play a 4K HDR disc, the TV automatically switches to the HDR mode and it doesn't let you change it. That's what's so frustrating.

I mean, you're still not telling me your normal settings...
I dunno man, if it's not you just disliking the look of HDR then it could be your cables (you need certain cables for HDR) or there might be a setting on your TV that activates HDR mode, like mine has. Outside of these three ideas there's not much popping to mind. |

I just picked up this player today from Best Buy. Selling my Oppo. Just tested Everest out in 4K because I recently watched that on My Oppo 4K player that I am now going to sell. I think the Video and Audio quality is on par with the Oppo if not a bit better on the Sony. I don't really see much difference. The one thing I do find odd is that with this player I cant change My picture settings while the movie is playing I cant even mess with the HDR settings where on my previous players Samsung, Phillips and Oppo I could.

I have a Sony X850D tv it does the same thing when I'm feeding it 4k HDR content. The tv reads the HDR metadata and switches automatically into HDR picture mode. The content on my TV does not look washed out, it looks much brighter and colorful the way HDR content is supposed to look. I'm assuming you already went into your 930D's input settings and set the HDMI input that is hooked up to the player to "Enhanced?" Maybe that is the issue? Your TV based on what I've seen and read should get much brighter than mine when you watch HDR content on it.

Brightness on 20 Contrast on 90 Color on 60 Sharpness on 75 Local Dimming on High Color Tone on Neutral All inputs on Enhanced Plus I have HDR cables on all inputs. Like the other guy said, as soon as you start to play a 4K HDR movie, the Picture Mode on the TV automatically switches to HDR and it won't let you make any changes. |

I've found those settings to be perfect for the picture to look the way I want it to look. The picture looks the most natural to me with those settings and is perfect for the HDR picture on the TV, ie deep blacks, nice whites, great contrast, nice sharp, clear picture and beautiful strong, not overly saturated colors. If HDR on the Blu-ray player is supposed to look just the opposite, with a murky, dull, colorless picture with practically no contrast, then I don't see the advantage of it. If the picture looks 100% better with the HDR turned off, then what's the point of it? If regular Blu-rays look 100 times better than a 4K HDR disc, then there's definitely something wrong. What settings do you suggest?

I have a Samsung TV which is set up using the rtings settings. For the heck of it, I just tried putting my SDR settings in torch mode and comparing the picture to the default HDR settings. HDR still didn't look too dim or washed out, so I doubt that's movielover1069's issue.
I've seen several people with Sony TV's claim their picture looks washed out in HDR mode (using various video sources.) The lower end models I could understand, but his is a pretty good model. Seems strange. I wonder if it's a defective set. |
