I was toying with video settings yesterday and made a mistake. First off, I do not have a 4k TV yet. I changed the output from "automatic" or whatever the default setting was, to "4k." This was a mistake now, because it seems I cannot change it back. Ever since, when the player boots up, instead of going to the home menu screen, the screen simply remains black. There is no way to access the home menu where all the apps and what-not are.

Only buttons on the remote that have any effect are the power on/off button and the open/close button. Pressing "home" on the remote does nothing. When you put a disc in, the disc will load and play. Trying to access the "home menu" while a disc is playing only returns you to a black screen. While the black screen displays the TV reads, "Unsupported signal. Please check the device output."

I've tried the player on all the TV's in the house, all Sony TV's, but none are 4k. It seems there is no way to reboot the player back to factory settings. The only thing that might work that I could think of is hooking it up to a 4k TV and changing the setting back, but I do not have a 4k TV.

If anyone might have some other insight into how I could fix this, I would appreciate it. I do not have the receipt for the player anymore so there is no way Sony will cover a repair under warranty. To make matters somewhat worse, the number for a repair place close to me that Sony gave me is a disconnected number. I would hate to have to send the player somewhere, pay a pretty penny, when really all I may have had to do was hook it up to a 4k TV and change the settings back.
I would try powering on, leave the power button pressed for a long time, it might reset it or bring some emergency options up

Appreciate the response, unfortunately it didn't solve the issue.

On p. 27 of the manual, it mentions many choices which might work. Here is one:

• Reset the [Output Video Resolution] to the
lowest resolution by pressing STOP, HOME, and then POP UP/MENU button on the remote.

The only other thing you could try is if you have a computer monitor with an HDMI input, try connecting it to that and see if you can get a picture and change it from there.

Edit: Here is the whole list:

No picture or the picture is not output correctly.
• Check that all the cables are securely
connected (page 11).
• Switch the input selector on your TV to
display the signal from the player.
• Reset the [Output Video Resolution] to the
lowest resolution by pressing x STOP, HOME, and then POP UP/MENU button on the remote.
• Try the following: 1Turn the player off and on again. 2Turn the connected equipment off and on again. 3Disconnect and then reconnect the HDMI cable.
• The HDMI OUT jack is connected to a DVI device that does not support copyright protection technology.
• Check the [Output Video Resolution] settings in [Screen Settings] (page 21).
• For Ultra HD Blu-ray/BD-ROM/DVD-ROM/ Data content/Network content, check the [24p Output] settings in [Screen Settings] (page 21).
• For 4K output, please make sure that the player is connected to 4K display that supports HDCP2.2 capable HDMI input using Premium High Speed HDMI Cable or High Speed HDMI Cable that supports 18 Gbps bandwidth (page 11).

Tried all of these and still nothing unfortunately. Had really hoped plugging the HDMI into my computer would have done the trick, but it didn't read on my computer at all, as if nothing was plugged in. Wish something could be done while a disc was playing, that is really the only way I could access some options.

Really at a loss as what I could possibly do next.

Did you try the Stop/Home/Pop Up/Menu while you actually have a disc in the unit?

Also, did you try another HDMI cable? You may be having a handshake issue between the unit and you tv. If it is plugged in a receiver, I would try plugging it directly into the tv with a different cable.

I rarely have the problems others mention.
I would like to try this on my player but I can’t figure out how to disable it.
I probably enabled this option when I started up and now it just skippes this option in the easy set up menu. Is there a way to disable it once it’s enabled ? I don’t wanna do a complete reset to factory des fault because I have a modified region free player. Afraid it will disable the region free possibility.

Maybe take it to a store and ask to hook it up to a 4k TV for a few minutes? Explain to them what happened?
Or, attempt to navigate the menu options to set it back by watching a video, or going through the manual?

Start at 6:07 on this video to switch to 1080p by mimicking his menu commands:

Factory reset is probably an option, too. If you're doing it in the dark, maybe watch a video to do that option, as well?

Quickstart is found under System Settings under the main Setup from the Home screen and also found on p. 25 of the manual. So far, I have mine on with no issues but with only about four months of use.

Since his screen is blank, he can't see any menus unless he were to guess where they are. Taking it to a store is probably the best bet but as I said, I would try another cable. Also, try another HDMI input on the tv.

It's plugged directly into the TV, I don't have a receiver. The HDMI cable I use is a very good quality cable, but I did try my older cable and the result is same. When I try the stop/home/menu combo while a disc is in and the disc is playing, it simply goes back to black screen, I assume this is because of pressing "home", because that is the screen I am trying to access, but cannot.

The menu he's accessing is exactly the menu that I need that will no longer come up when the player boots on.

Like I said, that is the menu/"home" screen I am trying to access, but cannot, it is simply a black screen. When I turn the player on, it should go to that menu/"home" screen, but instead all I get is a black screen. I assume since I changed output to only "4k" and my TV cannot read it, that is why I am getting this result, but still when I put a disc in, it will play the disc.

At this point, my last option seems to be to bring it to a store and see if they will let me hook it into a 4k TV and change the setting back if it will read on a 4k TV.

I've been using the player for more than a year, close to two. It's not a problematic player in my estimation, until I went and did this stupid shit, toying with the settings. But, it is kind of ridiculous that changing one setting can derail a player like this making the main menu inaccessible and now having no way of restarting/rebooting the settings, other than by seemingly hooking it into a 4k TV to change the settings back. Hoping that that even works.

Before you bring your player to a store and plug it in one of their 4K TVs, try this:

- Remove any disc from the player.
- Turn everything Off; the player and your entire system.
- Remove any USB stick.
- Disconnect everything; HDMI cable(s), any other digital cable.
- Unplug the AC power cord from the outlet.
- On the front player press the Power On/Off button and keep your thumb pressing it for 30 seconds.
[Don't release your thumb before 30 seconds, or even 60 seconds]
- Release your thumb from the Power button (front panel).
- Now just wait for half hour without touching anything of your components...player, TV, system.
[Just open the fridge, make yourself a snack, open a beer or a pop...wait 30 minutes]
- After 30 mins, reconnect the HDMI cable(s).
- Plug back the AC power cord.
- Turn back On your player, and your TV.

Was really hoping this would do the trick, unfortunately it didn't. When I booted the player on, the Sony logo came up, then it went to a blank, black screen saying "Unsupported signal. Please check the device output." Before I give up all together, my last chance is to hook it up to a 4k TV and see if I can get the home menu.

What I mean is, when it turns on, did you try pressing Up Arrow; then ENTER; then, down arrow two times (or whatever it is on that youtube clip); then ENTER. After that, press ENTER again (where "Auto" might be highlighted), or even press down once more to lower resolution settings... and so on. With a black screen.
I've had to do that before once with an old DVD player I had. I changed a video output setting, and the screen went completely blank. I had to navigate the menu with no screen, and I was able to set it back to what it was previous.

Alright, I see what you're saying now. I'll try this, but obviously not remembering where every little thing is, even with the help of that video, is going to be pretty damn difficult.

But thank you, this is actually some really good advice if it can even be done.

I agree.

* Still, this is a flaw from this player if it is a common issue.

OK, wow, did some maneuvering on the black home menu screen. It is moving despite not being able to see where I am going on the menu. I clicked the Netflix icon on the remote and I am now playing something on Netflix, can hear it playing but cannot see it.

No sweat, just look @ a YouTube video to help you navigate; from your laptop or tablet or Android.

If you cannot access the menu, time to bring your player to the TV store and ask a friendly salespeople to plug it in one of their 4K TVs. ...With now the hope that you can access back the menu settings and do a [Reset to Factory Default Settings]

* But my guess is something else that is happening here.

The big issue while looking at screen shots and videos of the home menu is, it varies person to person how many apps you have displaying, ect. So, while I have some idea of what mine was, it's really hard to remember for sure.

What I would do is this:
• After turning the X800 power on, on the remote I'd press the Arrow button Up, Up, Up three times, than the Arrow button Right, Right, Right three times, then click Enter.

•• I want to make sure that the HDMI cable that I'm using from the X800 is plugged in the HDMI Out 1 directly to the TV and with the right TV HDMI input selection from the TV.
And that HDMI cable should be a good one capable of passing 4K video resolution signal even if the TV is only 1080p. A 2-meter 4K HDMI cable (18gbps) is only few dollars.
