To finally this Sony player and while I have only had it 48 hours I have played about 5 movies through it and After watching Passengers in 4K tonight this player is just as good as the Oppo with PQ and Sound without all the issues so far. Really glad I picked this up and sold my Oppo.
Just fyi, I called Sony about my problem with having to turn off the HDR on the player in order to get the correct picture. Turns out that because both the X800 and the XBR55X930D TV are HDR, if you have it turned on on both, one will override the other. So if the HDR is turned on on the TV, it needs to be turned off on the Blu-ray player. I thought it might be something like that. I'm surprised that you're not having the same problem but then you have the Sony soundbar with the 4K HDR pass-thru which probably eliminates the problem.

Does this player use SD cards by any chance or is it only USB flash drives? I was so in a hurry and excited to replace my XB1S with this player, that I totally forgot about adding a flash card.
No SD cards. Only 1 USB port on the front.

That is really weird and doesn't make sense to me because then everyone with a 4K TV that has HDR would have the same problem and I have never heard of that. You don't even turn on HDR on the TV when The TV sees that there is an HDR Source it Automatically goes into HDR mode from my understanding.

Actually I just Turned HDR off through the player and when you do that then you don't get HDR at all. You get just standard 4K no HDR and the TV does not even go into HDR mode.

Can you download video from the VUDU/Amazon/Netflix apps? I know Amazon/Netflix are primarily mobile only for download but VUDU can do it on the PS3 (my current Blu-ray player).

You can download from vudu. Netflix allows it but only with select movies and shows.

I don't know what to tell you then. They pulled up my settings on my TV from their end, checked everything, made sure the input was on Enhanced, did a diagnostic check of the Blu-ray player and that's what they told me. Maybe the pass-thru on your soundbar actually does make a difference somehow because you're X800 isn't directly connected to your TV.

Interesting I wish I could see what yours look like as far as your picture. So did that fix it for you are you getting a better picture now?

My picture is amazing but then it always was with the HDR setting turned Off. I get the picture that I should be getting. You'd have to be here to see what I mean and to see the difference.

This player allows Vudu downloads? Interesting. UHD as well? I have an OPPO, but that would motivate me to buy another player.

Hello, friends! I have the Sony 79xbr900b(a non-HDR 4k tv). I have the Samsung and Phillips 4k players. Does anyone recommend the Sony 4k player? Do you think it handles non-HDR tv's better? If so, why? Thanks in advance! Cheers and Happy St. Patrick's Day!

The SDR conversion on this is shit to my eyes. Any setting to the left of default clips the brights like nuts, any setting to the right of default blows out the picture. Leaving it on the default provides a decent picture but it's a little too dark and a little color boosted to my eye. Also it looks dull as dishwater, even compared to normal BD. I did some back and forth comparisons using my region-free BD player and the BD beat the UHD every time when using SDR mode, at least on my setup.

Luckily I am still having much better luck with actual HDR on this player compared to the Samsung. My only issue right now is thinking the UHD sometimes looks less colorful than it should, compared to the BD, but it's only on some movies and I'm not sure how much of that is intentional HDR regrading. I know for example everyone said Deadpool's outfit is a duller red on UHD on purpose. I tested Allied and the UHD looks less bold in color in certain scenes, however testing Magnificent 7 shows much MORE color on the UHD.

More testing is required, but like I said months ago with the Samsung I find it endlessly frustrating I can't just match the blue bars and know I'm seeing proper color like you can with rec 709 SDR.

Check your spam folder. I had to email Sony after 4 days and they emailed me back less than an hour later with the code and exactly when they emailed it to me which was in less than 24 hours from when I registered the player. They claim it was in my spam folder for some reason though I never saw it.

Just to go back to Deadpool, they actually DID make the costume a much darker red than what the comics and/or movie promo materials would have us expect/believe, it was due to the way that the brighter shade of colour read on camera. Tim Miller wanted grittier realism rather than a pop-bubblegum comic book look, even going so far as to add grain to the final image.

The Panasonic players will give you the best SDR conversion for your TV, one that includes the wider colour gamut. I use a Panny with my own 55X9005B and it's the mutt's nuts.

I submitted my email last Friday and then never heard back -- so I contacted them on Tuesday and they replied right away. I guess I entered the wrong SN information. I re-submitted my information on Tuesday and got the email last night.

Ordered my two movies and bought 3 more at a discounted price!

Right. It's just hard to trust the color looks right when you don't have that firm calibration standard to back it up, ya know? I have to kind of just trust Allied is supposed to look a little more harsh and less colorful, while Magnificent 7 is supposed to look even more colorful. It's hard not to see difference as bad, especially since I got the lower nits.

I need to test a lot, lot more before assuming anything though. Just venting frustrations.

I never did either but after contacting them they gave it to me in less than an hour later. I checked my spam folder and never saw it in there but they claimed I registered Thursday night and they emailed the code Friday afternoon so something is up. So I also recommend anyone waiting for a code just shoot them an email cause they are pretty quick getting the code to you.

I was able to get Passengers and Chappie. I already had most of the others I would have picked and the others were out of stock. Same with the discs offered discounted that aren't offered for free. I either already had it or it was out of stock.
