Does the X800m2 have the same freezing issues as the original model? The original X800 was my first UHD player and it froze on half the discs I put into it. Sony even sent me a replacement player and it did the same thing. I ended up getting a super cheapo LG that plays everything fine, but I'd like to have a higher quality player again.
Obviously not everyone had freezing issues with the OG but a lot of people other than me did as well. Just wondering if the same "talk" happens with the m2. I haven't been around to read it. |

So right up front this is not a big deal. But I've noticed an issue when playing back DVDs in 4:3. When I turn on the player and it auto resumes my DVD it stretches the screen horizontally to fit the tv. Going to the dvd menu doesn't make it change back either. I have to hit stop and then play again at which point it autoresumes along with the correct 4:3 ratio.
Anyone else notice this glitch? |

This only happened a few times but it seemed that if I had QuickStart ON, it did not happen as much. It's the same for the X800M2 but rarely happens with that model.

Back in the year 2017 a couple of my family members got two new Sony UBP-X800 4K Blu-ray players as a gift. Off and on for around 6 years one of my family members has been using the one Sony UBP-X800 sometimes everyday, and it has been working perfectly fine for optical discs. Netflix ran an optical disc rental service by mail, and after 25 years on September 29th 2023 they shipped out their last optical discs, and a family member and I just mailed back the last Blu-ray disc on 10-3-2023 (I decided to send the last batch of rental discs back even though Netflix told customers they could keep them). But my point is for around 6 years this Sony UBP-X800 4K Blu-ray player that use to cost around $150 with free shipping around Black Friday in 2017, is a almost flawless player. Sony in the year 2019 came out with the replacement player called the Sony UBP-X800M2 which just adds a manual Dolby Vision HDR feature with black Friday prices as low as $198 with free shipping, but because of inflation has a list price of $329.99 with a Black Friday sale price in the more recent past being around $249 with free shipping.
But off and on over a 6-year period one of my family members was using the year 2017 Sony UBP-X800 with Netflix unlimited Blu-ray disc rental program. And, also they would watch store purchased BD-100 and BD-66 4K Blu-ray discs. Basically, flawless playback. They use to use the Sony player for a few years for streaming, but when they got a Roku Ultra around 2019 at that location since the Roku Ultra is a better streaming player then the Sony, they no longer use the Sony 4K Blu-ray player for streaming. Since my one family member lives in an extreme rural area the closes REDBOX is a 40 minute drive, therefore they will be renting 4K Blu-ray and 2K Blu-ray discs a lot less. Netflix Blu-ray rental by mail was a better place to rent for people that live in extreme rural areas. People that live in rural areas or big cities where the closes REDBOX is 5 to 10 minutes away, then renting from REDBOX daily or weekly is more practical (there are over 29,000 automated REDBOX machines nationwide at over 20,000 locations). So, my family member well now be using the Sony 4K Blu-ray player a lot less. The first reason why is because all their streaming is now on the ROKU Ultra and the second reason is the closes place to rent a Blu-ray is a 40-minute drive. Also, while I purchase a lot of new release 4K Blu-ray discs and sometimes 2K Blu-ray discs, sometimes my family members are not interested in the movies and TV programs that I purchase. So instead of the Sony UBP-X800 getting used everyday like it use to for optical disc watching and streaming, now it might only be used once a week for optical disc watching by my family members. So there well most likely be less posts like this about the Sony UBP-X800 as the world slowly switches over to 100% streaming and sometimes keeping their cable TV and satellite TV service. Some people use a cable TV app or satellite TV app to stream channels, which is a replacement for traditional cable TV and satellite TV service. 99.9% of all my TV watching is 4K Blu-ray discs and 2K Blu-ray discs. Netflix streaming first came out in 2007 and a family member first started using Netflix streaming from a 2010 Panasonic Blu-ray player. While I started hooking Blu-ray players up with built in streaming apps for people in the year 2010, then again in 2016 with the 4K Roku Ultra, I personally at this time do not have any streaming boxes connected to my TV at my location. Just 4K Blu-ray player, Direct TV that is hardly watched, and ATSC. One day I might connect a brand new never used year 2018 Roku Ultra to my system. For now I just got too many unopened 4K Blu-ray discs and 2K Blu-ray discs to go through first. Last edited by HDTV1080P; 10-04-2023 at 05:26 AM. |

Bought Sony UBP-X800 about two years after its launch. It continues to be a star for DVD, BD, and 4K UHD BD playback. No issues or nitpicks.
The Sony replaced a Panasonic DMP-UB900 which lasted 15 months for reading BD and 4K UHD BD. It remains a stellar CD player, so it wasn't a total loss. |

Yes, but it is now out of production. The new and improved year 2019 Sony UBP-X800M2 is better with just adding the manual Dolby Vision HDR feature whereas the old year 2017 Sony UBP-X800 only had HDR10. There are better universal players from various companies that cost between $1,000-$2.000+ that also play SACD’s and DVD-Audio discs. The big advantage of the Sony 4K Blu-ray players is the price of $329.99 and sometimes $249.99 around November black Friday’s.

I have had experience with one X800 and two X800M2s (one of them a replacement unit for the original X800). The X800 straight up froze on every 100gb disc I played. The replacement X800M2 partially solved the issue, as the same discs that previously froze during playback only exhibited slight stutter around 2 hour mark. A very small percentage of all discs froze on occasion, but not repeatedly as with the X800.
I was later on able to fix this issue completely by improving the airflow around and under the unit by increasing the elevation with some rubber pads, and placing the unit in an open space. Based on this, I assume that the unit is prone to overheating and that in this state the proccessor is unable to handle the final layer change of the 100 GB discs. You may have already noticed that the model has no internal fans, and the only air vents are under the unit, close to the heatsink and the proccessor. If I am right about this, it is a poor design and should have been taking into account. However, with these extra steps, the X800M2 has become as reliable as could be hoped for. I am not sure I could, due to these issues, call it an excellent player, but I am personally very happy with it. Would in fact go as far as recommend it, provided that you can place it in an open space and do some tinkering with the height. |

https://electronics.sony.com/tv-vide...rs/p/ubpx800m2 B and H Photo and Amazon have the Sony UBP-X800M2 on sale for $248 with free shipping. Historically this is the cheapest price the player goes on sale for in recent years and most likely will not get any cheaper around Black Friday. The holiday prices coming in October instead of November. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...4k_uhd_4k.html |

Until you go to play anything that has over 30 minutes of audio embedded in a menu. I discovered this last night while trying to listen to a bonus feature on disc one of the I Love Lucy complete Blu-ray set. This likely means that every radio episode that is embedded into the menu on every single disc will shut off right before the end of the show.
