I just got my code so it took around 36 hours. Not bad at all. Not a lot there I wanted other than Underworld to be honest. Might have added ASM2 but it was sold out, so I got The Shallows. I hear conflicting things about that movie's quality but it's supposed to be a great disc.
Added the Ghostbusters movies for $14 a piece. Why not. |

Hello everyone. I am new and posting with a question on the Sony UBP-X800 on whether or not it has been determined that the player CAN be updated at a later date to Dolby Vision. I have spent about four hours scouring various forums and talked to Sony. Early on, people thought the price point would determine that update but now with LG and Philips stating their drives will be updated later to Dolby Vision and are both $299, they match the price. Any inside knowledge on this? It is the ONLY holdback for me.

Personally - and this is pure conjecture here - I think Sony are using the same MediaTek silicon as those others are/will be, so it CAN be updated to DV. But whether it WILL be updated to DV is entirely in Sony's court.

Thank you Geoff for responding. I have actually been sitting here waiting! If I have a tv that has dolby vision capability, would I have to have a player that had the same or would it matter?

Yes, you need DV in both the player and the display. The player needs it to be able to recognise the DV enhancement layer and output the appropriate 12-bit signal with the special sauce metadata, while the display needs it in order to properly decode and display the aforementioned signal + metadata.

The HDR on this really looks great even with my 500 nit set. I am having none of the brightness or washed out issues like I had with the Samsung. The only issue I have is elevated blacks, but I haven't even tried messing with the black levels or calibrating yet, so I don't want to complain about that yet. Hopefully I can fix that because other than that one issue this player magically makes HDR mode look great on my set. I'm getting 10bit color too I believe, since if I change to forced 8bit it looks different and less colorful.
I don't know what the difference is on my set between this and the Samsung, but something makes this work while that player did not. I wonder if they have some kind of software difference with how they handle limited nits that functions automatically. Like maybe the Sony detects my set's capabilities and adjusts things by itself. I do feel like the HDR is not as pronounced as it was on the Samsung, gut feeling, so maybe that's because it's limiting the highs to present a better overall picture somehow. In any event after testing a half-dozen discs I can say if you have a 500 nit set or thereabout and struggle with HDR this might be a good player to try out. |

Can someone that has the Sony X800 tell if if the refresh rate will auto switch back to 60 Hz when exiting a movie in Vudu and Netflix. Don't just test a blu-ray. I'm mostly interested in streaming but my Roku Ultra does not support 24 Hz and with the Nvidia Shield, you have to manually switch to 24 Hz to display 24 Hz output in it's streaming apps. Some TV's have can display what refresh rate is getting output by pressing something like display or info button on the TV's remote.

If you are going to use the X800 for mostly streaming, you'll be wasting your money. Still you haven't figured it out after replying the same response twice. |

That's why I'm asking, because I don't want to end up wasting my money. Finally I got the answer I was looking for which is it will return back to 60 Hz after exiting a movie from streaming services, and not just blu-rays. I just want a better streamer than my Roku Ultra that has the least issues when streaming and if it means buying a UHD disc player then so be it. I'm getting chirping sounds in Netflix and Vudu in my Roku Ultra which I heard is a firmware issue from what I read in the Roku forum.

Then Roku will likely fix that in a future update. This is not a better streaming device than a Roku Ultra. |

I bought the Ultra and a Premier on release, and they were buggy pieces of shit up until I stopped using them in January. Roku, just like Oppo, has lost my business for awhile. I buy a lot of gear every year, and some companies are getting too comfortable releasing shit products that aren't ready for prime time. |
