Quick question: does the Sony come with a HDMI cable?
I'm looking into this player as the LG 50Hz issue for the UK is pending...

Does it switch automatically to HDR? If you have to set it manually then something is not right.

If you have a Sony TV, the HDMI port to which the X800 is connected should be set to "enhanced". Other brand TVs should also have a setting for this otherwise you will not get proper HDR/WCG.

It does not (in the US anyway).

Loving mine so far.
Most happy with the fact that I can run it thru my Denon 710 and get 2160

I could not get the Phillips to pass thru the Denon without downscaling to 1080.

That, and the colors being "subdued" -- led me to return the Phillips.

This Sony immediately sensed my TV didn't have HDR and adjusted -- the colors look great. And I ran it thru the Denon without changing any settings and it worked right off the bat.
Once the turned off the "BD audio mix" setting I had perfect sound and audio. Stunning!

I think I know what you're getting at, but it sounds funny to say you have a problem where, with a certain setting, "the picture looks fantastic!"

Pretty certain someone here will know the answer. I'm just plain old SDR and my picture looks fantastic too.

Auto1 vs Auto2 upscale should be clarified, as posted above. The way I read the manual is, if you have other Sony gear in the chain Auto1 may just give you 1080p, but if not (like me), Auto 1 and Auto 2 will both present the same 4k/24 output from a 1080p/24 disc.

Why not just set the output resolution to 4k? Then it locks out the upscaling option and upscales everything.

Yes, it automatically switches to HDR and yes, I do have the HDMI input set to Enhanced. I've been reading another thread in the Sony Community Forums and a ton of people seem to be having this same problem but nobody in this forum seems to be. Very odd.

I'm not saying it's the cause of the problem but did you swap the HDMI cable to see what it does? Also are you running it directly to the TV, if not maybe you could try doing that and then see what happens?

If you're the guy who said his sharpness was on 75, color was on 60 and color temp was on medium and other such things then I really think that's your issue. You ignored me when I said that before, assuming you're the same dude, but if the TV is forcing an HDR mode with more calibrated settings then that will look dim and washed out to you.

Yes, trust me, I've tried EVERYTHING including those two things but nothing works. Thanks though.

Yes, that's me. Sorry if I ignored your post, I don't remember seeing it so certainly didn't mean to. I've tried tweaking all the settings in the HDR Video Mode but nothing makes any difference. I'm not an expert calibrator by any means but nothing I change does anything to make the PQ any better. So why isn't anyone else in here having the same problem? Again, I can't believe that I'm the only one. HDR is supposed to make the picture better, not worse. What do you suggest?

I have not had any issue playing Fox 4KUHD or Blurays. I actually watched Star Wars Episode 3 over the weekend and looked Great no issues. So I wonder why only certain people are having problems with Fox BD Playback.

That shouldn't be the case. For kicks, I tried putting my Samsung KS8000 in "torch mode" for SDR content and compared it to the default settings in HDR mode, and the HDR still did not look dim or washed out by comparison.

I believe this is an issue with Sony TVs specifically, as I've seen several people here, and elsewhere, complain about "dim and washed out HDR." Not sure what's causing it, but some of the Sony TVs are not handling HDR well. Perhaps it's a setting that needs to be activated, or maybe it's just a defective panel.

Do you find the x800 plays 1080p blu rays with very high level PQ. Other than those bandings, etc.

What is the general concesus on this forum regards 1080p play back with the x800.

I have the Sony's 7200 player. Would you say x800 plays 1080p better with more Picture Quality.

Don't know about the general consensus on the forum, but I played Avatar last night on the Sony and it was stunning. Borderline 3D in some areas. Also played The Mummy and was equally impressed. Very much equal to or probably better than my Oppo 103.

Wow Thank You so much badboi. Amazon USA has 79% reviews as 5 stars too. But your assessment shows Heart-Love Joy.

I read that Sony 1000 to have Dolby Vision. Came from a Sony's Rep mouth somewheres. So my Eyes will stay Perked to that. I need DV.

So Awesome. Sony don't have tons major issues since hitting stores like OPPO 203. And I wish to see someones assessment of the True PQ for the x800 vs Oppo 203. I need two different Players. One for bedroom.

Other than the current issue with Fox Blu-ray discs, 1080p looks quite good, and that's with regular output at 1080p and letting my UHD TV do the upscaling. I should try playing my discs while letting the player upscale. I did it briefly last night and thought it increased the color a tad. Not sure if that's a result of the additional pixels or what but I haven't experimented with this enough to know if I was just experiencing placebo effect.

As far as the Fox disc issue, I'm rather confident Sony will fix this. I've spoken to two different reps on the phone from Sony Support and both have acknowledged they are aware of the issue. One said they will work on it but it may not be in the next firmware update. The second rep I spoke with indicated it very well may come in the April firmware update... so we'll see. Either way, it's a new player, and based on the old Sony Blu-ray player I had, I can say this company has a strong track record of supporting their players over the course of time with firmware quite well.
