What's interesting about the Philips mk2 is whether they keep using Panasonic guts or if they've jumped ship to MediaTek. If it's the former then it suggests that the Pannys do actually have an upgrade path to DV, but with their corporate reluctance to embrace Dolby's system - believing their mapping to be just as good, aided by Panasonic Hollywood Labs as it is - I can't see it happening. Then again, I thought that Sony TVs would never, ever drink from the DV cup and look what happened!

Default not!!! :: (an April Fools Day Joke) - (i promise)

not!!! :: (an April Fools Day Joke) - (i promise)
note :: i immediately purchased myself based on this information :: so, we're all in the identical situation :: (i doubt that the rep when questioned would misrepresent)

Is this a sales rep in a store you're talking about? You'd be surprised as to what they'd say just to close a sale...

Default Dolby Vision :: (confirmed?)

i understand that you are in the business
i also understand that the sales person 'directly contacted' the 'Sony rep' as i indicated, several times as i wanted to be certain before purchasing
i mentioned that the previous day, the same inquiry indicated 'no information'
it is my understanding that this just happened (we all shall see if it is true or not, but i find it difficult to believe that a Sony rep would misrepresent this important feature support) or i would not have posted or purchased
if it (for any reason is untrue) i will return the player

Default Dolby Vision :: (confirmation - Monday?)

i, as many, look forward to your 'official information from Sony'
i, too, intend to follow up, given the importance of reliable information
(please keep in mind, that this was not an irresponsible act on my part :: if we cannot be reliably informed in such a situation of this importance by Sony (reps), then it is a very bad development in the business community)

Default Sony :: representative

this was not the situation :: the sales person contacted the 'official Sony rep' for that store that is their 'direct contact with Sony'
(i am certain that Robert too, has such a 'Sony contact' (rep) that he will be contacting as did the store that i purchased from
hopefully, this will be confirmed and not represent useless nonsense (we all have better things to do)

Default Default Sony UBP-X800 4K UHD Blu-ray player :: Dolby Vision (following up)

given concerns by many, i just followed up with the sales person that has 'direct contact with Sony' :: he confirmed that the information is reliable and accurate

although until 'widely reported' i expect confirmation will be questionable by many, as should be expected

i should add that had i any concerns about the reliability of this information, i would not have purchased or posted as i did

given that i do believe it accurate and reliable information (what kind of fool am i?), i am hopeful that it is simply a situation of 'early information' and not 'mis-information)

i do expect things to become clear in the forthcoming days

A sales person also told me I needed a 4K HDMI cable that cost $50 with my new UHD TV. And when I said I only have 1080p content, he told me that if I had a digital cable box, that cable would allow the box to provide my TV a 4K signal. So yeah, extremely huge grain of salt, here.

Default salespersons (integrity?)

people vary, as do salespersons
not every salesperson by category is untrustworthy and irresponsible
is it not irresponsible to label them all so?
it's not salt, it's persons and i encounter both, informed and uninformed
i validate which i am dealing with and proceed
in the coming days, we shall see if i was dealing with a responsible sales person or not (i am confidant that the sales person was not 'just closing a sale')
my vote is for trust

I didn't throw a blanket over every salesman. I said huge grain of salt. Be trusting to a fault. I'll be skeptical.

I've been checking the Amazon.com site daily as well as Amazon, Sony and Best Buy (Canada) and this player is still not available for sale, only pre-order. Does anyone know when it will be available in Canada?

So do we have any info on any apps that may be available. I think many of us want to see Netflix, Amazon and especially Vudu.

I can't believe Sony's own 4K app is not on this player. Netflix, Amazon and Vudu is on this player.

Personally, I wouldn’t deal with intermediaries lower than a dotted line to a Product Manager. Heck, I remember once on a bike ride, paidgeek (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=31883) queried me as to having a reluctance to even go riding with anyone lower down on the totem pole than a Vice President in the consumer electronics industry for talking shop out of them, for accuracy.

Anyway, seems like a lot of hand-wringing here. To relieve needless anxiety and idle speculation, shoot Phil a courteous email….. https://www.linkedin.com/in/philip-jones-333ab83/

I randomly tried the SDR options again today and I don't know what I changed but they look a lot better. Might have been me switching some things from auto to their appropriate values, like YcBcR to 4:2:2 and whatnot. More testing is required.

Still some black crush, but the color looks more appropriate.

Well there will be detail lost in the blacks, I'd imagine, since you're trading HDR for SDR.
