I just tried that but unfortunately it didn't make any difference. The picture still looks more vivid and dynamic with the HDR turned off. I appreciate your help though!

So was it ever confirmed that the Sony x800 would get Dolby Vision or was that an April fools joke?

They have not said anything other than that the player can do DV if they so feel the need to enable it.

Considering the first DV discs are not until June 6, and Sony has not set a date for their displays to get the DV update (when I think the players will get it too), there really is no news.

What about the TVs like the 2016 models of 930s. Do they possess the chip that can be updated via FW to support DV?

I heard a rumor about the 930E '17 models, but that dent do me any good with the '16 version...ha ha...I'm selfish :-)

That's what I saw, but no mention of the 2016 models which means I will have to sit this whole Dolby Vision thing out :-(

Default Dolby Vision :: Sony (2017 models) :: announced (CES 2017) & supported

CES 2017 :: Sony was clear that supported models forthcoming in 2017 were:

- XBR-X930E Series
- XBR-X940E Series
- XBR-Z9D Series (2016 releases & 2017 releases)

notes :: the determination of support for Dolby Vision 'specifically' requires the powerful X1 Extreme processor (apparently the standard X1 is not capable of the required processing power to enable Dolby Vision, so the XBR-X900E Series and lower will not have the possibility of Dolby Vision support) :: further, that Dolby Vision will be enabled later in 2017 via a firmware update (early on support will not be 'out of the box') :: specifically, regarding the 2016 XBR-Z9D Series previously available in 2016, prior to the announcements, will also be enabled when the firmware becomes available, thus eventually all XBR-Z9D Series will be Dolby Vision supported :: an assumption on my part, given the announcements is that none of the Sony televisions have the hardware support required of Dolby Vision (unconfirmed though) :: so, the top-of-the-line consumer models forthcoming in 2017 (XBR-X930E Series & XBR-X940E Series) consumer television will support Dolby Vision, as well as the consumer/professional (as categorized by Sony) XBR-Z9D Series televisions

The SDR conversion does have a very nice and sharp look to it. I think it uses some kind of processing that makes it look really vivid. It also has lots of black crush on my setup, but that might vary depending on the TV. If you want to emulate that look though I think messing with gamma and brightness are the way to do it.

Don't know if any of you had this problem with this player. I just returned mine because in some movies (Shin Godzilla 4K and an episode of The Simspons Season 15 BD) there's color banding in just one specific scene in both discs (Shin Godzilla was worse, the entire screen had a rainbow effect just for that scene). It had to be the player since I tried the same disc on my Xbox One S and it played fine. Don't know if I should try another one or get a different player. Bother the hell out of me that the X800 doesn't output 10 bit color, only 12 bit with Deep Color on and 8 bit with it off. Both my Samsung and Xbox output 10 bit just fine.

Can anyone confirm the 4k/HDR status of Netflix, Amazon and VUDU on this player? Obviously VUDU would only be 4k until they do their HDR10 update (unless Sony provides DV support on this player).

Interesting that there's apparently no native 10-bit output on the Sony.

Does VUDU even have 4k(or UHD) on this player?

Wait... I thought the SDR conversion was only 8bit, but that HDR mode should put out the proper 10bit color. Is this wrong?

Not "wrong", no. But folks be saying that the HDR output is up-rated to 12-bit instead of being presented at the native 10-bit depth of UHD Blu, this is the same issue which the Panasonic players have. Not that it's a problem for most folks as any decent TV should still be able to handle the 12-bit output BUT some sets have indeed choked on the 12-bit 4:4:4 4K24 output from these players, creating a lot of banding (posterisation) when using that mode. Switching to 12-bit 4:2:2 or 10-bit 4:2:2/4:4:4 usually solves the issue on the affected sets.

Panasonic have since added a 10-bit output option to their 2017 players (see pic) and it should be carried across to the 2016 models via firmware in due course, seeing as they use the same picture processor at their core.

Only the TVs with the X1 Extreme processor are supposed get the DV upgrade. And I think the only 2016 Tv that has that chip is the Z series.
And only the upper end 2017 TVs have it. Most of their TVs have the regular X1 processor.
