This was with DC in auto, with 1080p I got 4k/24 444 12 bit.

Netflix HDR and HDR discs were BT 2020 12 bit, not sure colorspace.

Yep, that's what most players do with Deep Color set to on.

Well, no TV currently supports 12 bit pixel depth. 10 bit is the most. So in some situations displaying 12 bit image may cause some issues.

Yep, id prefer 10 bit 444 considering the content is 10 bit 420.

There has to be some odd reason Sony, Panny, Roku, PS4 Pro, etc... all went with 12 bit.

I love 420. Probably not what you all are talking about but still . . .

Just finished watching Prometheus BD (a Fox release). Not a single issue. No issues with any of my Star Wars releases either.

I think 10 bit in 420, 422 and 444 as options would have been best. Who knows how each display will react. 10 bit 444 is a logical choice because 420 to 444 has to happen somewhere, and if you have a reliable player it would do 420 to 444 well. 10 bit vs 12 bit is odd to me.

If you look at the Samsung K8500, its 10 bit 444 and while it has had issues, the banding seen on some display with 12 bit players is not seen using the Samsung.

If you turn on Deep Colour on the Samsung then it causes banding on the affected TV's, just like everyone else's 12-bit 4:4:4 output.

FWIW, my personal theory is that because 12-bit 4:2:2 4K24 is supported on HDMI 1.4 that they chose it as the best option that serves both legacy and current UHD hardware. Unfortunately switching it to 12-bit 4:4:4 4K24 ramps up the amount of data considerably (basically maxing out what HDMI 2.0 can actually handle, hence 4K60 being limited to 12-bit 4:2:2) and when that option is selected it's caught out a fair few TVs, which simply don't have the processing power to deal with it properly.

No offense, but there are many who are. I'm glad there's no issues on your end, though.

That's what I like about the Samsung player. It will display 10 bit 4:4:4 for 24p content, and appropriately, 10 bit 4:2:0 for 60p.

I see the full power of UHD for the first time.

Son of a... I thought I read you should get as close to 4:2:0 as possible, so I picked 4:2:2. Been doing that with BDs forever. I switched it to 4:4:4 though and had Deep Color on auto and loaded up some discs... massive difference. Not only is the color proper, but I am seeing 10bit color for the first time. Immediate difference. It also made the HDR and detail look a little better, and no I don't think that's a placebo at all. Everything I have written in this forum for months now suddenly makes me look like a dumbass. If I loved a lot of discs before I can't wait to see them now.

One reason I never tried stuff like 4:4:4 is because with all the talk of my TV being shit I just assumed my problem was low nits. Well, it's not. I was seeing a good HDR difference before and if my limited testing tonight is any judge it's even better now, plus the wide color difference is immediately obvious despite my set supposedly not benefiting from it despite being a 10bit panel. Not saying you guys with $3,000 TVs aren't seeing a better image, but man...

If you have a low-nits TV and think your image is washed out then check your settings. A triple 4 on the slots might be your ticket to UHD jackpot.

How do you even change that setting?

Settings is at the top, then everything is under "screen settings" I believe. Deep color should be on auto by default, I changed it day one to off. Not sure about the other's default, but change it to YcBcCr 4:4:4. See if that makes a difference for you as well, I hope it does.

Okay, I found it! So you recommend 4:4:4 and Deep Color turned to Auto instead of Off, right? I will give it a try, thanks!

Sorry to say I just officially heard back from Sony that they have no plans on upgrading for Dolby Vision.

Got to love Sony! Their TVs are Dolby Vision for this year but their new 4K players are not. Thankfully I returned the player and sticking with Samsung's that I already owned. Samsung works better with my Samsung KS8500 and I can live with Samsung for my other Sony TV which will be upgraded to Vision later this year. I'll wait a couple years when Sony will release a player with Vision and it will probably be down to $149 by then.
