And like I said, no current plans at a big company can mean several things. It makes no sense to me that their 2016 flagship, as well as 2017 displays will get it and their new players wont.

This. All he's likely to find out is officially announced information.

Remember how Sony wasn't wanting to be out on the first wave of UHD players, they were more keen on marketing their UHD streaming. This follows a pattern, the TV will support DV 4K streaming, but X800 players likely were based on the same SoC as the X1000. The Sony upgradable TV's model that can handle a DV update are likely using different more powerful multi-core SoC's since they also handle the android environment. I never did find out what the SoC used in the x800 or x1000 was?

I agree with what most are saying, Sony can change their mind at any time and I have not and will not stop urging them to give us Dolby Vision.

Regarding my Sony sources, I speak with product management, engineering and technical specialists as well as account management. I would not post anything that was not an official and confirmed statement by those in the know.

At this time we have OPPO UBD-203 and LGUP970 that will officially support Dolby Vision.

Tricky Dick Sony.

On Feb 26, 2017 Sony announced ZD9 will get DV Update later in the year. Damn Sony had the DV hardware in place on the ZD9 since ZD9 was announced on July 2016(as no DV). 8 months they kept the DV secret!

But its NO NO NO secret the x800 have Stunning HDR10 PQ, Outstanding Sound, and Amazon, Vudu, Netflix.

Guess what hardware is already in place on the x800.

Well, it is just a guess so far...

Sony is very conflicted as an enterprise right now. The left hand, right hand, left foot, right foot are all moving in different directions to different rhythms for a while. The divisions don't give off any vibe of synergy currently, it's more like cacophony.

I also think JohnAV's post up in 706 has probably hit on a pattern, like he said. Sony is in delay mode, trying to keep the pace slow and over-evaluate the sentiment of the consumer. However, the time lag to this approach may cost them goodwill and market share for players. I have been a dedicated Sony bluray player owner, have bought 5 over the last 8 years. But, with no front panel displays of late, and no DV, I have bought my first OPPO ever, and feel comfortable I have made the best decision (for me) (also a proud Z9D owner).

Others will decide what is best for themselves based on their own metrics.

I don't know what the official release date actually was but it seems that Best Buy is selling it early because the network features and apps are mostly not yet enabled. Netflix works, all other apps cannot launch. Playstation Video just gives an error saying the service is not available. There is no promised release date yet on firmware which enables the apps.

It plays back 4K discs just fine and is the fastest player I've tried between Bone S, Samsung, and Philips in terms of loading discs and navigating menus. I have not tried the Panasonic and Oppo players. Of particular interest is the fact that this is the first player which features an adjustable HDR to SDR conversion algorithm, when the movie is playing you can twiddle a slider up and down which changes the luminance and saturation values of the conversion.

Obviously if you have an HDR TV this is meaningless to you. Those of us who have SDR TVs will find it interesting. Playing with the slider did make the image brighter or darker, though without an HDR TV to compare side-by-side it's not possible for me to see which SDR setting is most "accurate" relative to an HDR image.

The Blu-ray disc playback is the fastest I have ever seen. It's The Flash in terms of perfomance. It's the Blu-ray player version of "I'm running so fast that I'm my own hype man!" You put a disc in and almost instantly it has loaded. Reportedly this player has a 10-core Mediatek SoC in it, the same one in the Oppo, which is probably why this thing runs like it's literally on fire. BD playback is otherwise what you would expect from any modern BD player, after 10 years I think any player you buy today can play back BD just fine.

The optical loader read media at a higher RPM compared to a BD player, which results in the media loading faster. Depending on the vendor you can hear this difference as you load the media if your very close to a player. The poster referenced a 10-core, sorry they don't have that many cores, the previous generation for players was duel core as was what MTK used, now they have gone to a improved pipe'd quad core processor (SoC). That is what I anticipate as a requirement for dolby vision playback.

I have seen discussion about its was using the same SoC as the Oppo but in all honesty very doubtful. The MT8591 used in the UDP-203 was codeveloped between MediaTek and Oppo. The video processing marketplace for UHD players has changed considerably compared several vendors making SoC's for BD players. You have a lot more emphasis on vendors selling SoC's that go into UDTV's. Likely why it took Sony so long to setup/design the x1000, and x800 players. You can't really use a SoC for a UDTV in a UHD BD player, they have different requirements. The Mediatek quad core MT5891 is the SoC used in the Sony 65ZD9 displays BTW that can be updated to Dolby Vision, runs a android environment.

Even more choices.

Everyone is LOOKING Ahead. Even Sony. From my Experience with Sony Players. And I had 7 Sony players plus. 3 of which is the 7200. Often my family members gets Sony pass me downs.
Vudu, Amazon, Netflix works AMAZING on these. A True Joy as I direct their sound to the AVR with my Speakers as 5.1.2.
Yes my Onkyo 737 displays 5.1.2 from VUDU's near 95 Dolby Vision UHD Movies(Input can shows DD plus). So far I gotten 11 these VUDU DV UHD Atmos Movies free by redeeming my UHD10 Ultra Violet Code. And these DV Movies looks absolutely STUNNING!!! on my LG E6.

Who here will make the BOLD BOLD BOLD statement that the current Sony x800 with FW's will never be able to do Dolby Vision? Sony do Do Things QUIETLY

On my Sony 7200 now I watch Amazing VUDU App PQ movies...

DV movies I seen already at home
Arrival, Allied, Pacific Rim, Mad Max Fury Road, Lucy, Oblivion, Warcraft, MGM's The Silence of the Lambs(yes in DV) to mention some from memory. These as DV VUDU App movies on my E6 is so Incredible. HDR10 disc by my EYES and from others on forums just do not look as Stunning

The Future necessary for Complete Home Theatrical is DV Atmos Apps such as VUDU on Blu Players(This makes total sense to me). Like How hard is it to enter a UV Redeem Code for FREE DV, Atmos movies. Look! some DV Movies you want for free from buying redeeming HDR10 DISC and Code Cheaply on sale. Some you'll pay likely $40+ for the DV Disk with free Redeem Codes

Choosing between 12 bit and 8 bit is a no brainer, obviously. Ideally, you'd get 10 bit and 4:4:4, though.
I ended up busy last night and only briefly compared Allied but it seemed to me on a quick glance that Deep Color does indeed need to be on auto for wide color. I'll test it more tonight.

Yeah, 12 bit should look much better than 8 bit, but it may introduce some instability and/or banding that isn't inherent in the source.

I'll keep an eye on that. Luckily banding isn't one of my super pet peeves, but I will see it if it's really bad. Will test more with deep color off too and report back.

"3.2 seconds to load Passengers UHD Blu Ray Disc"

Versus 38 to 44 seconds... ???

Hmmmm. Do Sony Players with Streaming Apps just loads HDR10 Blu Ray discs fast?

My word, I unboxed my X800 earlier. Gone instantly were any notions of keeping the LG.

This feels like a premium product, with a sturdy build and a good weight to it. Really easy to set up, and I like what I'm seeing PQ wise. An update was available as soon as I'd connected it to the internet. The OSD is very much the same as Sony's recent BD players, but I like that. It's no frills, but straight to the point.

The only thing I don't like, is that the remote turns on my Region A Sony BD player too. I put up with this when I had a separate Sony Region B player, and was hoping not to repeat it with a new format, but hey ho.
