Thanks for the replies. I'm going to pick it up this weekend. It should be a nice update since I've been using my PS3 as a Blu-ray player

Hold off. Sony is releasing their first Dolby Vision UHD Blu-ray disc this summer. If they don't create a DV firmware update for the X800 and ES models to coincide, then I would choose a different player.

Keep in mind that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment operates separately from Sony Corporation/Sony Electronics, so this does not necessarily mean that they are considering a DV update for the UBP-X800.

It's all going to depend on sales and consumer reaction, same as it always does. If there's a perceived strong demand for Dolby from consumers then Sony and the others will start including Dolby. That simple.

The fact they ARE adding to their displays in the next few months will tell us all we need to know about the players then. Until they add the FW for the displays, I am not pretending to know what they will do with the players.

Pinched from another forum. Add salt accordingly.

According to customer support, the Sony UBP-X800 UHD player will receive Dolby Vision in a firmware update. This is the answer i got on my question regarding this subject:

We have researched with our resources and we would like to let you know that the player is only compatible with the Dolby Atmos and DTS-X. Also we would like to let you know that our dedicated software team are currently working on this to add the Dolby Vision feature in the player through next software update and we do not have any ETA yet regarding the update.

You're in for a very nice upgrade, I was using a PS3 previously as well.

I stuck with PS3 as a player far too long, but it all worked out for the best now.

If the X800 get DV support, I'll be even more relieved...

What the heck does being compatible with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X have to do with Dolby vision?

Sounds like it was an excerpt from a response to more than 1 question that the individual had asked about both Atmos/DTS:X and DV. The Sony rep just added the DV update part at the end. I don't think the rep was trying to merge the info. Just responding to multiple questions. That's how I read it anyways.

I think the X800's upscaling is quite a bit better than my LG E6's.

Both movies are pretty bad (I assume), so I'd like to get them for free...

Registered my X800 with Sony and ordered my two free movies.

The new Resident Evil and new Underworld are both available.

For some reason, it wants your credit card even tho it's free...

It's a nice upgrade. I've been rewatching my blu's and they all look great. I'm very happy with my purchase.

Anyway... My experience was that without wide color and the proper nits there was no way to get a consistently pleasing and accurate looking image across all discs. You can use color boosting and contrast boosting to make one disc look good, but then another disc will look worse. Also you're never seeing an accurate image... how it was "meant to be seen"... which bothered me a lot, but opinions differ on that. There are people here who turned up color and turned on dynamic contrast and then stopped worrying about it, and maybe you can be one of them. That was not my experience.

The Sony has a nice SDR mode that emulates the look of HDR pretty well and gives you the 4k resolution your set can display. It did have some black crush and color boosting on my set, but I can say now having an HDR Premium television to compare with that the SDR conversion was closer overall to seeing the discs as mastered than the HDR presentation was. Again though, it was that lack of accuracy that made it unacceptable to me.

However let me end by saying all that matters is that YOU like the image you're seeing. If some color and contrast tweaks make it look good to you then enjoy! Same with SDR conversion, if it looks good to you then enjoy! I am only offering advice from my own perspective, which is one more built around seeing things as intended than most others'.
Thanks for the feedback, i think i've dialed in on some nice settings!! Thanks!!

Planning to get this player this week in the UK. Any other UK owners able to shed light on whether we get discounts / free titles like in the US, or did Sony shaft us there as well as with the price? (UK retail price of £399/~$520, inclusive of tax mind - not that that explains the outrageous markup.) From what I can see only one title comes with the player and we get no choice - it's Inferno?

You had to pre-order to get the two free titles.
