After a week with my new player I'm extremely happy with my purchase. Over the past few nights I've watched Ghostbusters and The Magnificent Seven 4K disk and multiple other blu-rays. The sound has been outstanding with every movie and the picture quality is absolutely amazing at times. It's day and night difference from the quality I was getting playing movies on my PS3.

Sound and Vision magazine just awarded the Sony UBP-X800 a top pick and 5 stars out of 5 for being a low cost first generation 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player that has a reference picture and sound quality just like the OPPO UDP-203 and the Panasonic DMP-UB900 (plus a very good build quality considering the low price). For only $300 list price the Sony UBP-X800 plays multichannel DVD-Audio discs and SACD’s (also DSD bitstream is supported). Also the Sony UBP-X800 passed 100% of the video performance tests and matches the picture quality of the reference OPPO UDP-203 and Panasonic DMP-UB900 for native 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs and standard 1080P Blu-ray discs that are upscaled to 4K Ultra HD resolutions. In addition the Sony offers 4K Ultra HD streaming with HDR. Streaming is something that the OPPO UDP-203 does not offer and might not every offer. However the big negative for some is that the Sony UBP-X800 might not receive a firmware update to turn its HDMI 2.0a port into a HDMI 2.0b port that supports Dolby Vision (One may need to wait to 2018 when Sony might release its second generation 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player in order to see Dolby Vision support). The OPPO UDP-203 and LG UP970 have promised Dolby Vision support with a future firmware update. Another negative of the Sony UBP-X800 is that it has no analog audio outputs and no rear USB jack (Only a front USB jack that does not look good cosmetically when a USB flash drive is inserted).
Sound and Vision magazine review of the Sony UBP-X800 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player (The following are select word for word quotes from the review) “Sony’s UBP-X800 Ultra HD Blu-ray player, on the other hand, is capable of playing SACDs and DVD-Audio discs, along with standard Blu-rays (and Blu-ray 3D discs), DVDs, and, yes, CDs. And it delivers all that functionality at a low $300 price, a dramatic drop from the $1,000 the company charged for the BDP-S1.” “Sony appears with no announced firmware update that will enable it to support the Dolby Vision HDR format. (A Sony rep I reached out to responded, “We are still studying that. Nothing to announce at this time.”)” “The UBP-X800 can stream 4K and HDR, and it comes loaded with the Netflix, Vudu, and Amazon Instant Video apps, though HDR is only available via Netflix at present.” “Although I didn’t test this feature, I should mention that the Sony can be configured to stream audio via Bluetooth to wireless headphones and speakers.” “The UBP-X800 sailed through our full suite of video processing tests, which puts it in the company of the Panasonic DMP-UB900 (see my review in our February/March issue), as well as Oppo’s UDP-203. Comparing its performance with the Panasonic player’s, the Sony held up extremely well when upconverting 1080p material to 4K resolution.” Read more at https://www.soundandvision.com/conte...ZW5pUpOqGyh.99 |

Cons:
*No Dolby Vision support *No Sony Ultra streaming No HDCD decoding *I'll be overjoyed if they add just one of these two. If they wait and add them to a next generation UBD I will sell the X800 and buy it. Unless Denon comes out with a universal UHD player then all bets are off! |

Sorry for noob question but I keep trying to update firmware out of box and it tells me it cannot connect and my setting show wireless connection is strong.
Anyone have any tips? Something not communicating with modem? Open up ports? Thanks in advance. |

2. Sony Ultra streaming ... is it avail with the PS4? ... Or another hi-end Sony ultra hi-res/ultra hi-def music/movie server? 3. I don't remember, ever, seeing HDCD decoding inside a Sony DVD/Blu-ray player. Hey, it was discarded from the Oppo 203/205 players. * LG and Oppo do support, officially, Dolby Vision. And Sony too in some of their TVs, so ... * You can stream from many other products for a fraction of a peanut. * Same with HDCD decoding; eBay has players with HDCD decoding for less than hundred bucks. |

Only a couple of more weeks till Despicable Me 1 and 2 come out.
In all honesty, I'm actually counting on the X800 and Z9D getting that DV firmware update anytime now... Z9D is certain ofcourse but where would the logic be if the X800 didn't get this update??? C'mon, Sony, don't let me down... |

That about sums it up, for better or worse...
![]() I'm gonna pre-order the UK discs for Despicable Me 1 and 2 as the ones in my country apparently do NOT have digital codes. Not that I need those for myself but I would like to have them so I can sell them. Resident Evil: Vendetta will be a day one buy because I'm a fan, Power Rangers will be a day one buy purely based on the fact it's a DV disc. If it turns out the X800 won't have DV and the X1000 will, I know what I will do... |
