Whatever the problem was, the new TV firmware cleared it up. Player is now resolving well over 1000 nits, as well it should.

Just tried it and it works pretty well. Setting it to Manual and moving the slider to 35 provided a nice amount of enhancement to Oblivion without it looking too processed and over-baked. I still prefer the Panny's sharpening modes but this is a decent second prize.

I used my X1000ES today to the LG E6, the 3rd white clipping pattern on Ryan's file shows up to the 3rd one after 2000 nit, like 817. So I guess I was close to 3000 nits.

Yeah I think it works very well as long as you do not set it too high.

I only use it for digital television broadcasts on both my TVs (set to 20) and for 3D on the XD9405D (set to 15) because for some reason the 3D picture is soft. I also use it on my HW55ES projector but only on the minimal setting as RC is much more agressive there.

This probably the first major electronic I have purchased that constantly has random issues. Right now it's only outputting stereo for some reason. It's the player because when I watch the same things via a different player such as Fire TV or Casting on my P55 everything is fine. Between that and the audio sync issue it is looking like I will have to do a service request.

You get reduced peak brightness with the contrast down to that point, as 10K has said over at AVS. It won't be an issue with brighter content but it may well have a knock-on effect on low APL scenes, so on Cinema Home I have contrast at 88 and gamma at +2 which preserves brightness and also gets up to the 4000 nit level in the patterns. You might think messing with the gamma is a no-no but lest we forget, the PQ EOTF is for HDR and not conventional SDR gamma so the gamma control serves its own purpose in HDR. It's the nearest thing we have to a control that can 'regulate' the PQ curve.

I'm sorry for still going off topic after all but I quickly wanted to ask this here since we're talking about HDR contrast settings now.

So I am now looking at the Sony nit ramp on my XD9405 playing on a Panasonic UB900.

With contrast at default max and gamma at default 0, everything from 1100 is clipped.

With contrast at 90 and gamma at default 0, everything from 1500 is clipped.

With contrast at 85 and gamma at max, everything from 2000 is clipped.

In all cases I have left the Panny's HDR dynamic range setting at default 0.

Any comments/suggestions?

FWIW I've got the Sony pattern running on my UB900 into the ZD9, no adjustments on the player and Cinema Home with contrast at 88 and gamma at +2 on the TV, and the 2000/2500/3000 points in the range are clearly delineated. 4000 and up is being clipped.

I'm gonna experiment more with gamma at max and try keeping contrast as high as possible on the XD9405.

Will also try your settings for the ZD9 and see how they compare to the ones I have it on now.



Any XD9405 / X940D owners here who care to comment on their HDR settings?

If I had a DV capable TV, I would not have purchased the x800. Since there is no guarantee it will ever get DV. I purchased the X800 since I have an HDR10 TV.

Same here. It seemed to be the best universally reviewed player, and my two previous sonys are still going strong. Don't have any complaints so far, it's insanely fast and plays everything I throw at it without ?.

That all being said, I do hope it gets a dv update so I can see what all the fuss is about when a movie I actually want comes out in it. The Despicable Me thread has just disintegrated into a petty argument.

Great news! My very first 4K UHD/HDR BD player, the Sony X800, is now on it's way to me from Robert Zohn's Value Electronics. I should be receiving it on Friday June 9, but won't be setting it up until Tuesday June 13.

Today is Wed June 7. As of this day, can someone please tell me the latest X800 firmware upgrade?
