When I tested the x800 with 4K SDR test patterns. It would not pass the 10 bit test with Deep color off. Although the last time I looked it was with the previous firmware. But if it's still the same, deep color off can cause banding with 10 bit 4K SDR content.

If I had a TV that was Dolby Vision capable, I would not have purchased the x800. Although I did purchase an Oppo, but I sold it in favor of the x800 since I don't have a DV capable TV.

I do have a DV TV but I still boughtthe X800 since it seemed to be the best reviewed. I'm not paying 500$ for an Oppo just for DV when seems to have a lot of stuff against it.

My point is that officially, there is no mention of DV coming. While LG and OPPo have official statements saying DV is coming to their players. So I would not have bought the x800 expecting to get Dolby Vision. And if I had a Dolby Vision TV, I would want a UHD BD player that is capable of playing DV discs.

Some 4K Ultra HD flat panels have Dolby Vision for streaming only, and their HDMI inputs are HDMI 2.0a. Some TV manufactories will be offering a firmware update to turn the HDMI input into HDMI 2.0b so that Dolby Vision can be received from a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. However some companies might not issue a firmware update for older model flat screens, and consumers will be stuck with Dolby Vision for streaming only, until they replace their flat screen with a new model.

They never said DV was coming, and in fact told retailers it was not from what insiders have said here. If you chose to buy it anyway you can't cry foul about not getting a DV update. If DV was a big deal you could have gotten a different player.

Sony's DV Resident Evil disc comes out July 18th.
At Sony Demo Rooms, Shows, Press Conference____ You Think Sony Corp will hook up at their Grand Show their Z9D, A1E, 930/940e to an OPPO 203 to show How Magnificient their DV MetaData Encode is on Sony Disc Movies. With Resident Evil the first of many, many Sony's to Come.

Certainly Sony could'nt hook up the LG UP970 for their DV FW is likely in August.

That's what makes Sony's ambiguity about a DV update to both of their players so mystifying. Their home video division is coming out with a DV disc, their newest displays will have DV compatibility and yet their players may not receive an update.

Sony truly is a schizophrenic company.

I sure anyone would get that impression. But Sony Pictures is not really the party at fault, you had one side of the electronics section promoting their UHD VOD streaming service over producing UHD players, while the other side had observed how decimated their BD player marketplace was, and figured "Nobody is in a hurry for 4K in physical media". Look at the marketing against the x1000 when finally announced Sept 15 2016, considerably later then Panasonic, Phillips and Samsung.

Quote:
Sony’s Director of Home Entertainment Systems, Yukio Ishikawa, describes the X1000ES like this: "The new UBP-X1000ES player has been long awaited by custom installers who desire a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player that provides a 'one-stop' solution for their clients' premium entertainment needs.
The estimated pricing at the time was $899 or higher as I recall.

Now Oppo announced their UDP-203 on Sept 21,2016 and there was guesses to what price that would be, comments we will try to stay close to 103 price of $499 but it could be higher, maybe $600.

This news probably shocked Sony Home Entertainment systems marketing, the x1000 was clearly not going to be selling well, and also they needed a model for consumers. So the UDP-203 was shipping December 16, 2016, and Sony still didn't have any players ready and now they had to contend with a $549 price compared to the $699 price they settled on the x1000.

So Sony came out with a consumer model for the masses of the x1000, the $299 x800, announced CES 2017, pricing/availability Feb 9, 2017, and it made it to stores in March.

But oddly enough the x1000 had a much more difficult time being marketed, saw a lot of price fluctuation as it retailed for $699, but got discounted to $649 multiple times.

So yes Sony does comes across as schizophrenic, especially with some whole heartily for UHD streaming only, some believing no one is in that much rush for a UHD player, and a home video group producing Dolby Vison UHD BD's soon.

I think Sony will Change Something by or during July 2017. Especially with 2 4K Disc free promo ending and BEST BUY price for LG UP970 DV Player having dropped to $249.

Sony can't sit still. Some Change is order. Like July, August 2017.

Yay!!
I got my Sony UBP-X800 4K UHD/HDR Blu-ray player set up on 6/13. Looks and plays really good so far. It is hooked up to my Samsung UN49KS8000 4K UHD/HDR TV via AudioQuest Carbon HDMI cable (0.6m).

Will have to get much better looks at 4K UHD discs in the days ahead, but the Blu-rays I've popped in so far look so awesome!

So, I'm now all 4K HDR capable.

Please welcome me (finally) to the madness!

That nonsense is why the PS4 Pro doesn't have a UHD player.

Sony owns the top 10 in Amazon player sales, as usual, with Samsung, and the X800 is #6 (thats a UHD player, not a 1080p player which is crazy). It also has 101 reviews on Amazon and 396 on Best Buy.

The LG is #33 on Amazon, only has 6 reviews on Amazon and 58 on Best Buy. What exactly does Sony need to change? BTW, when you read each owners thread on AVS, pretty easy which one works better than the other...

Do you have a point other than being a troll, or fanboy, or whatever the hell you are?

Hell, the twice as much Oppo 203 sells better on Amazon than the LG... If I HAD to buy a DV player, it sure as shit wouldn't be an LG reading their current track record. I love their OLED's, but they aren't the one you want to own in the player dept.

Elwaylite. Interesting Amazon and Best Buy figures you quote. You can't use those numbers to represent a 4K Blu Player's PQ or It's Features Richness.

I mean. Sony x1000es been on sale at Amazon since April 2017. Current low review count there like nada. Even at Best Buy it has only 4 reviews. So how well that represents the x1000es PQ OR Features???

Note your Hate 4K Player...
LG 4K Player did'nt even have its first Best Buy review till April 2017.
