Thanks
I tried helping you in the other thread but I guess you don't want to hear what I'm saying? A 2015 UHD TV might have issues with proper HDR, so you could try SDR conversion. Also if you're used to a super high backlight HDR might look "dark" as it reels the picture back to normal levels during most scenes.

Sorry I have been trying to find that other thread but can't seem to find it. I thought the Sony I have got was a 2016 model. Is the TV it's self a good hdr tv?

I'd try another HDMI cable, but it's a 40' run with a redmere cabaret that has worked well so far. They're rated at a speed of 18, so it shouldn't be a problem..

After doing a bit of reading this morning, I found out that it is the redmere cable not passing a 4k/60hz signal that the menu is outputting. It failed in the test supplied here https://www.soundandvision.com/conte...eY1Pjeqy3KP.97

The good news is that I can still watch movies, but just can't use any of the x800's apps or menu without turning off the enhanced setting on my TV.

Thanks for the help, and I hope this helps someone else.

Pretty sure it is a 2016 model. As for HDR, I think it is sortof 10-bit, but achieved by 8-bit + FRC as an illusion:

Quote:
10-bit colour can be faked on an 8-bit panel by using dithering, also known as Frame Rate Control or FRC. This uses slightly different shades of colour with successive frames to create the illusion of more colours. 8-bit+FRC TVs as still qualify as UHD Premium, as the TV is accepting a 10-bit signal, processing it and capable of displaying it accurately, but having a native 10-bit panel is naturally the preferred option.
(from http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2016/11/...g-a-4k-hdr-tv/)

I have a 43XD8099 and I am pretty sure the model is mostly identical to yours (though I think mine uses a different type of LCD panel).

Thank you for the reply I've only had the TV a couple of month I got it from currys so does the hdr work but because it isn't an actual 10 bit panel it won't be as bright then? If that is the case do I just use the hdr to sdr conversion on my x800 player? On the specs on the Sony website it says it is a 10 bit panel.

10-bit doesn't mean wide color gamut necessarily. My old Samsung 6300 had a 10-bit panel but was not wide color. Also advertising HDR doesn't mean it has 1,000 nits or good and effective HDR usage, ya know? I would google around for firm answers on your TV's wide color status and peak nits and if they fall well below HDR Premium standards I would use SDR conversion. I say this with experience with such a set. The Sony had some unkillable black crush in SDR on my Samsung, but might work better on a Sony set? As I said in the other thread, Geoff loved his Panasonic's SDR conversion.

The alternative, which some have had success with, is boosting color and turning on a setting like dynamic contrast, which will compensate somewhat for these deficiencies, but not look "accurate," if you care about that.

Does my 4K player have to be connected directly to the tv if I don't have a 4K receiver? I currently have it connected to the tv, but I can't get audio through my stereo. Do I have to run an audio out cable to the receiver? I have the same issue when I us the tv's apps. I can only hear audio through the tv's speakers.

From what I've seen of my TV, it definitely has wide colour gamut, and from comparisons I've done with regular blu-rays and 4K there is a distinguishable difference, but it's not as noticeable as I'd imagine it would be on a larger set. From what I've seen and read (I looked at the TV you own in store before buying mine), your TV has wide colour gamut too. I'm not sure I'll be much help other than that, though, as I've not noticed the same visual difference you talk about. That could be because our TVs are set up slightly differently (I've not fully explored the modes mine has), or could be because (I believe) your TV has an IPS panel behind it whilst mine uses a VA panel. But I only have a beginner-ish knowledge so I don't think I'll be that helpful!

One other thing to bear in mind, if you haven't already, is I think only two of the TV's HDMI ports work properly with HDR - I'm using the ARC one (HDMI 3 on my TV) for the player. Not sure which the other one is (might be HDMI 4?).

Yet Samsung called the HDR implementation on this set "HDR Premium".

You are spot on with the hdmi ports I thought all 4 of them were hdr ready I had my originally plugged into number 2 then today I moved it to number 4 and the picture looks much better thank you for that I have tried everything in the setting I thought I had bought a crap tv even though I did do my home work on it I just didn't know know the full scale of hdr and how it works I thought if the TV had hdr on it that was it it worked as now I do know a kettle more about hdr. Thank you for your help.

The 6300? I believe they called it "Pro." HDR Premium has actual specs the 6300 didn't come close to. My new KS8000 is HDR Premium.

If you look at the Samsung literature is states:

Perhaps even the ad people get confused!

Yeah that's BS then. Maybe only the little logo thing is protected by the spec requirements.

That was because they no longer wanted to promote SUHD term now that they hype Quantum Dot LED (QLED).

Now I have fixed the dark issue hdr when I play a 4k blueray brightness and contrast have automatically gone to max does this stay that high or do I change it? The picture looks good now but if I change it will the picture look better thanks in advance.

This week I am seeing retail stores and mail order companies have lowered the price of the Sony UBP-X800 around $30. It use to be $299.99, however Amazon and B and H Photo have the Sony UBP-X800 for $268 with free shipping. To get the two free Sony 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, your online order or sales receipt must be dated no later than 6/30/17 (That is around a $50 value, and is like purchasing the player for around $220 after the two free movies are received).

Default Sony UBPX800

So, I figured out that I can run one HDMI to my OLED and one HDMI to my receiver for sound. It's not as convenient as going straight through the receiver, but it will have to do for now. I did notice that when I pause a movie on the UBPX800, the sound will stop working when I resume playback until I flip through my HDMI sources on the receiver. It's weird, I don't understand why the sound drops out. Planet Earth II looks amazing, while Magnificent 7 looked like the blu ray version just darker, due to the HDR I'm assuming. I'm going to do some more A/B comparing between blu ray and UHD, as well as blu ray 4K upscaling, and standard 1080P from my PS3 to see if this player is worth keeping. I did order the 2 free discs (Life and Sausage Party) from Sony, so I hope those look more impressive than Magnificent 7 did.

I'm not sure - not tried playing around with them myself. You could always make a note of the current values and then play around. If you don't like it or think it's worse, put it back to the values you made a note of at the start!

Thank you minister for the reply again. How come all the hdmi ports are not hdr compatible? I will give it a go and play around with settings again and if I don't like them I will go back. Also am I best using the picture perfect disc again seems as it is a blueray disc and not a 4k disc or will it be a waste of time. Thanks in advance
