If you think blu-ray looks better in general there's definitely something wrong with your settings. The way you keep saying blu-ray is brighter makes me think maybe you use a super high backlight setting and HDR's more normal brightness looks dim to you? Lots of people had that issue early on.
LG 970 UHD player doesn't have that feature to turn HDR on and off [emoji35]

I looked for the setting that you described, but can't find it. Do you have an LG OLED or a different kind of tv? I'm troubleshooting to see if there is a setting that I may have missed that somehow could give me a better picture when playing 4K UHD discs, either in my tv settings or the Sony UBP X800. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi, I have the same set as you, I am going to buy this 4K player, do you watch 3D discs on it, if so is the pq good?

An edge-lit set with full HDR pumping through it is going to show blooming and grey blacks in a pitch dark room, in my experience. Ways to combat this are using a bias light or turning the backlight/smart LED down, but then you lose highlight brightness.

Compared The Revenant last night with the same result. The blu ray on the PS3 looked brighter and showed slightly more detail than the 4K in the UBP X800. A little bit more subtle difference compared to the Magnificent 7, but the difference should be a bit more in favor of the 4K disc, not the other way around. I don't get it.

Blu Balls, I don't know what is going on with your display. If I hadn't bought my Oppo for DV, I would have bought the Sony 800 player, I think it's that good.

I do know that every 4k disc I play on my Sony Z9D / Oppo 203 shows more fine detail and almost 3D depth in some cases. When I watch a good bd, I am wishing it had been 4k. I'm not pixel watching, it's just that the overall images are so appealing on the 4k.

As I said, I don't know what is happening on your setup, but you should feel more satisfied with the 4k version most of the time (Oblivion 4k excepted). And we have a couple of hundred others here that would agree. So keep trying to figure out what's hinky with your tv.

edit: Say hi to everyone at Clark and Addison for me the next time you're there, grew up in central Illinois.

Strange.

Was watching The Conjuring, pressed stop when the movie was over, saw the X800's main menu for a while and then all of a sudden the screen went black. No signal, player is still on though. This the third time something like this has happened.

There's either some setting or cable issue or you just really aren't used to a lower backlight.

EVen on my low end Sony 850C there is a big difference between the BD and the UHD BD. There is a night and day difference between how they look. The UHD BD always looks much better.

Decided to have my X800 be made region free. I now have a region free Sony BDP S590 for region A Blu-rays but the damn thing is so ugly, it is even more apparent now since I got the X800.

Hardware mod.

The guy who runs this service already did 3 Blu-ray players of mine. It's not cheap but it works flawlessly plus you can still install any future official firmware updates.

It's been a while so I don't recall an exact figure but I do know it was at least 100 Euros each.

Don't know yet how much it will be for the X800, I have send him an email but the webshop is closed due to the summer vacation period around here.

I've been thinking about getting it MR'd too (even just for DVD would be enough) but I'm still wary about hardware mods after a bad experience with a modded Sony BDP-S470.

Isn't there a more simple solution for DVDs using those one 4 all universal remotes?

I never had any problems with mine but I'm more willing to take the risk since the guy lives an hour's drive away from me, should there be any problems then I'll just go to him. Btw I just checked and it was 150 Euro each for the Sony S570 and S790 and 125 Euros for a Sony S350.

I'm just keeping my region-free BD player hooked up. Makes it easier to compare UHDs to BDs anyway.

I wonder if X800 will ever get thumbnail pictures for discs?

After using PS3 and PS4 for playback, I started to take that for granted.

Anything would be better than that white box with scrolling text.

Thumbnails would be a nice 'quality of life' improvement.
