I've had Sony 4K Upscaling players since the S790 and this is how it has always worked.
Which one gives the best results?

How would this player compare against the Samsung UBD-M8500

Depends on which is better at upscaling, the player or the TV. Upscaling quality can be found in most reviews on sites like Rtings.

The player is probably perfectly capable of playing these formats. They are just deactivated because many TVs for the US market still can't handle these formats. The EU TV models are probably manufactured in the same factory as the US models...

Speaking of EU models. If you desperately want this Sony player to be capable of playing 1080i50 and PAL, buy it in Europe with a region free mod and a power converter.

That's something you would need to test and see which one you like better. If you have a Sony TV, there probably won't be much of a difference between the two.

Like it or not, there's wiggle room there and given the historic lack of 50Hz playback on Sony standalones I wouldn't have expected it this time, same goes for PAL to NTSC conversion.

As for your first point I haven't had a player with a front-mounted play/enter button in years and it's never been an issue. Even if I don't have the player's remote to hand the HDMI CEC function will allow playback using the TV remote. If there's some sort of remote control apocalypse where they all get wiped out then sure, I guess I'm screwed but this hellish prospect won't keep me up at night.
Like I said in my honest assessment of this player, I'm "pretty pleased" with it but would "prefer one player to rule them all".

I mentioned Samsung because your post said "North American player from large mass-manufacture company"

I'm not looking for straight playback, what those of us in NA with players that support both SACD and DVD-Audio discs have come to expect over the past 15 or so years from PAL (and more recently 1080i50 BDs) playback is conversion to NTSC or 1080i60. The last four players I've had for my high resolution disc collection have all done that conversion (PAL > NTSC for my first one which didn't have upconversion, PAL > 1080i60 for those that have).

Again, I have a region free Orei BDP-M2 so I'm set until I get a player that will play all the discs I own; my observations were to inform those looking for a universal SACD/DVD-A player of these deficiencies. I'm happy with the Sony, saved me a bundle of cash over what the Oppo is currently going for and cost about the same as it was going to be to fix my Pioneer Elite BDP-62FD. Very happy to have access to my SACD collection again, had been over a month.

You are correct, I used auto 1, pressed display button on remote, display on tv said 1080p, then I selected auto 2, display said 4k

For those that care about such things, one of the things I absolutely LOVE about this player is the tiny wee green power light. It is far less instrusive than any other piece of equipment I have. The DISPLAY button readily pulls up the timing infomation (as well as resolution, HDR, bit-rates, codes, etc.) should you wish to see where you are, but I don't miss the lack of a front display at all. In fact most of my players that have one have a defeatable mode (FL Dimmer) but then an even brighter light comes on to let you know you have the display turned off, lol.

Don't have any way to measure pure output, but it's so tiny and faint - absolutely perfect. Wish those with adjustable brightness would add less bright options, even my AVR when it's in its lowest brightness mode is still brighter than I need it to be.

Nice job Sony, very stylish and slick.

I wish that green light wasn't even there, though it is thankfully pretty dim. The bright red power light on my region-free player drives me nuts.

Now that I agree with. I never thought I could do without a display on a player but now I just push the display button, and the X800 is so solid and quiet in operation I sometimes forget it's even there.

I also agree, just push the display button, can't understand people moaning about having no display on the front, it looks so slick as it is
X800 is solid and sooooo quiet

And I love it because it doesn't have a display with light I have to dim or switch off every time I use it. I even have the display on my Pioneer A/V receiver set to off.
It's been three months withmy Sony X-800 player and I'm very happy with it, it's reliable, has great upscaling and overall picture quality, can play my ripped SACD's either stereo ormultichannel with it (after have extracted the DSD files from the ISO with ISO2DSD) and seems to play everything I feed it with.
For those of you who want to play MKV files with Dolby Digital + audio with it I came around with an easy and fast workaround. First get TSmuxeR. Once open demux the MKV file into individual video, audio and subs files (beware, one at a time or you may have sync problems later), then muxed them with it into a m2ts file and now you can have your cake and eat it.

Try to understand that not everybody is the same, personally I just prefer a player with a front display thank you.

Going to send my player out for a region free hard mod this week. 100 Euros is still a lot of money but it's cheaper than the 150 Euros I paid for my previous players to be made region free.

What happens if you play 1080p blurays with player's resolution set on 2160p? Any advantages/disadvantages

If you are watching your BDs or UHD BDs on a 4K display, which I think you are, setting the X-800 output to 2160p, the player will upscale 1080p to 2160p instead of your T.V. set. You may want to test which does a better job at upscaling if your T.V. set or the Sony X-800 player. I have my Sony player set to output 2160p as I like its upscaling more than the upscaling done by my Samsung 4K set.
