Amazon is now selling this player for $229.51 with free shipping. Since it is being sold by Amazon Best Buy would match the price.

This Sony UBP-X800 will be at $199.99 for a factory new model very soon most likely. Plus getting 2 free 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray movies is a $50 value, therefore the player is really like $150 since the two free movies are included.

However the two free 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray promotion ends on 9-30-17. After 9-30-17 Sony will ether extend the promotion or reduce the price on the player a little bit.

I think the $199 price point will come around Thanksgiving.

You may want to test which does a better job at upscaling if your T.V. set or the Sony X-800 player. I have my Sony player set to output 2160p as I like its upscaling more than the upscaling done by my Samsung 4K set.
How so? Less color banding or something else?

You might be right. No reason to drop the player to fast in price. It would be ideal if Walmart would start carrying this player nationwide in their stores along with the current Samsung and Philips models. At $199.99 they might do so.

Either the movies are free or the player is $150, can't have both!

Is it the norm for player to do better upscaling than TV or is it dependent of TV?

Depends. Scaling is a tech process like most others. Different brands/hardware do it differently. Just compare and pick one.

The x800 is currently available for $181.09 brand new from Electronic Express via eBay if you use the code 'p20laborday'.

Seems like prices are dropping fast...

But I can't really complain since my unit has performed very well, no problems.

I guess the other thing is that Sony might discontinue the free movie program as we get further along (or has that happened already?).

It is set to end at the end of September or in October, can't remember exactly.

Received my hard modded X800 today after missing it for 5 days.

The first region A titles I'm going to watch on it are The Amityville Horror remake and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.

I just did an A/B comparison of the film Life. This time the 4K disc looked considerably better than the blu ray version. It was like the opposite of what I experienced with The Magnificent Seven comparison, where the blu ray looked brighter and more vibrant than the 4K presentation. I am baffled by this phenomenon.

I really like this player.

I can't find 4K titles I want yet (I'm more of a catalog fan), but the player really plays Blurays nicely. DVDs also look decent that I have tried.

I'm a Sony Buff. Always have been!

LG is my 2nd choice.

Next titles I will probably buy that are coming out are the Peanuts Holiday Collection from Warner Bros. in October. 4K titles are pretty rare that I want because I hate most newer movies. But, the player is still worth having for me. It does a very nice job with Blurays too. And for the occassional 4K title (whenever they start coming out) I want.

Maybe late to the party but FlatpanelsHD had a chance to talk to Sony at IFA.

Sony will on the other hand not update its current X800 UHD Blu-ray player to support Dolby Vision, the company confirmed to us.

LOL. They have the TVs that support it but not the player(s). My guess is we're about to see a new Sony UHD player with DV support (and hopefully a ***damn front display) in the near future.
