That's an older TV than mine but I would guess it uses roughly the same scaling chip and software, so yeah I'd say it's fine. I wouldn't focus on upscaling as part of your player choice.

I just bought the player today (not just for the upscaling, mind you). There is something I've been wondering about though. Is it recommended that I use the 'direct' option in video settings, or should I just stick with auto? This is from when I press options on the remote.

Direct definitely, that way you're getting the signal on the disc without changes. The other stuff I leave on auto and have had no issues. If you have a conflict you might need to turn something on/off yourself. Upscaling you can try on or off, see if you notice a difference.

Of all the complete TV shows (live-action and animated) on DVD I have, ST S9 and Friday are the only ones that do not automatically format to 4:3.

The Sammy is set to:
Picture - Picture Size - 16:9 Standard.

The Sony settings are:
TV Type - 16:9
Screen Format - Normal
DVD Aspect Ration - Letter Box
Cinema Conversion Mode - Auto

What should I adjust for the two above-mentioned shows, as well as any future TV shows on DVD, that won't automatically format to their proper 4:3?

I had this happen to me with The Muppet Show S1 the other day. I went to the player's homepage and back to the DVD that was in play and it was in 4:3.

Maybe worth a shot?

Anyone have problems with Wonder Woman on the X800? I had my first copy stop playback around an hour in and start skipping around with digital distortion. Swapped it for a new disc today and had the same result. Just a bad batch maybe, gonna go to a different Best Buy and swap it again. Pretty odd to have the same exact error though.

I watched Starship Troopers yesterday, Red today and tested a recent Warner movie just to be safe and they all played fine.

The Sony might need a firmware update. If you have a OPPO or other brand of 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player, you can use that player to verify the disc is good or defective.

It took me three returns but I got a disc that worked perfectly. Insane that it took that much effort. Crazy I even tried the third time, but glad I did.

I had no issues with the Wonder Woman UHD BD or 3D BD on my X800.

I returned the X800 simply because it doesn't provide an option to output in 10 bits. I'm one of those folks that my TV goes loco if the source outputs in 12 bit depth. I would seriously consider going back to this player if Sony provides a new firmware. I went to the Panasonic UB900 which has 10-bit option. Amazing player btw, it's just double the price.

Thinking of getting the UBP-X800. I've been watching the price on Amazon, and it varies every day! One day it shows $249, today shows $212, tomorrow may be back to $249. Anyone know why the price keeps going up AND down?

Solved my problem!

I just go to "Screen Settings", then to "Output Video Resolution", then set to "480p". So it's only when watching Star Trek: DS9 DVDs and Friday the 13th: The Series DVDs that I will have to make these temporary adjustments. When I am done, I set it back to "Auto".

There's no real "HDR settings" other than if you turn it off. If you mean the options menu put it on direct.

I am having troubles finding this exact video setting on the X800. I've gone through the menu with no luck. Any chance you can repeat the button press selection steps to guide me to what you mean? Thanks

During playback hit the "options" button on the remote. Then go to video settings. It defaults to "auto" which can use some noise reduction and such, so it's best to set it to "direct" which means it doesn't mess with what the disc sends it.

The manual makes no mention as to what versions HDMI Out 2 is compatible with.
