I've also found that the picture for UHD movies on my set are a little on the dim side with dynamic contrast completely off (I have a JS8500 TV as well). For normal BDs it is fine, but with UHD discs, I need to set them to at least the low setting for dynamic contrast. In the case of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 I actually need to boost it up to medium.

I've had the same problem. I'm pretty sure that it's the HDR causing that.

For me it does. With Dynamic Contrast off, the scene at the beginning in Missouri looks unnaturally dark. With the setting on medium, it actually looks like the time of day that it should be, without going overboard with the brightness. I'm fairly certain this is all because of my display capabilities unless there's something else that I'm missing regarding HDR settings.

Weird issue I’ve begun to have, and it only started to happen after I did the latest firmware update via USB.

Basically I turn on my home entertainment system, pop in a UHD, and the video keeps blacking out briefly every few seconds, as if the video is cutting in and out. I figured this could be an HDMI cable issue, but after a couple of minutes, this behavior goes away. Was thinking about reinstalling the firmware or rolling it back to see if that makes a difference, but I can’t find any details online about doing so.

I’ve got the player running through a Sony dn1070, and then hdmi out to the Vizio m55-D0.

Any suggestions?

I was surprised to find that the back of the player actually has 2 HDMI outputs, which certainly solves my audio problem. A pleasant surprise indeed.

I was disappointed that converting to SDR didn't yield a more pleasing result. It's definitely a mixed bag. So I decided to just go ahead and watch in HDR. This would also be a compromise if not for the fact that, while playing around with my settings, I discovered that bumping up Dynamic Contrast to medium gives a satisfactory brightness to the picture (far more than I would have expected).

I'm sure I'll be told that I shouldn't have such a setting enabled (and normally I wouldn't), but as leaving it off results in PQ that is far too dim, I'll have to just settle for making an exception here until the day comes when I have a Premium set.

Watched The Mummy tonight (first time in years - what a joy it is ), and was blown away by the presentation. Very filmic. I haven't been a fan of HDR, but after making the changes to my settings, I'll admit I can see what you guys go on about. The film positively glowed.
I know it's not a "recomended" setting but I use dynamic contrast too. Picture doesn't look right to me without it.

What is your TV's top nits? That seems to be the reason most turn on dynamic contrast, to deal with lower output than expected. Or maybe you're just used to a really high backlight. I haven't turned on dynamic contrast for any title since getting the KS8000.

I just got this player and while I appreciate that it's better than the awful Philips player I first tried to go with (BDP5502, for some reason it wouldn't send DTS-HD MA bitstream to my receiver, had to watch CE3K synced from BD), it seems way bigger than it ought to be. It's like the UHD BD player that thought it was an LD player.

The X800's build is perfect to me, no complaints at all. Well just one actually, but I won't bring that up again.

I'm not too familiar on nits, but I assume it's around 600? My backlight is typically set to 15, but when HDR content is played, it's automatically adjusted to max.

Yep, it's reassuring to me that it's such a solidly made bit of kit. I accidentally dropped mine on the floor when I first got it out of the box, took a proper whack too, but it keeps on truckin'.

Ouch! That must have been a moment.

Btw I now kind of regret having my X800 made regionfree recentlty, as I was offered the opportunity to buy the X1000 last week. I would have gotten it and sold the X800 if it hadn't been modified for region free already. Oh well, guess life without a front display goes on...

It looks like the Samsung 50'' mid range I bought around 4 months ago is not so bad with HDR as it first looked. First after a month or so of break in picture improved, then I bought an Ikea cheap TV stand as my previous one was too high and caused like patches of light at the top of the screen, more visible on the corners. And to finish, I bought an Ikea lamp, all glass, emits light in all directions, and coupled it with a 14 Watt Led bulb, cold light and put it behind the screen as a bias light as you advised me. All problems solved. HDR looks nice and I don't have to use Dinamic contrast.

It dwarves the S5500 I use for RB. I've had like 4 different Sony players and they kept getting smaller and smaller I guess it's gonna start over again.

Yeah, I know BD players have gotten smaller and smaller and shittier and shittier for build quality but even if you're just exaggerating for effect (hey, it's the internet) calling this anything like an LD player is hyperbolic to the extreme. My other BD/UHD players are all the standard 17" width too so maybe that's why I don't "see" it like you do. I had a Runco LD deck which weighed in at 40lbs and measured 6" high and 16" deep; the Sony UHD player is a lickle baby in comparison.

Hope this is the 4K UHD Bluray Player that Wal-Mart will be selling for Black Friday this year, could get a Phillips Magnavox 4K UHD Bluray Player for $148.00 plus tax but I like Sony products more.

Just one man's opinion, but Sony, Panasonic or Oppo are the quality bd/4K players proven over time.

Sounds similar to the Pioneer CLD-900 I had many years ago. That thing cost $1,100.00 in early 1985 ($2,565.00 in 2017 dollars). Makes my 800 and 203 seem small and cheap in comparison .
