I've always rather liked the look of the U and PG bbfc triangles as an addition to the artwork (although the Irish rating logo, when it's there, has been spoiling things for some time now) ...
Then my Spartacus UHD arrived the other day with the new PG triangle - it's just too cartoony / playschool. Doesn't go with Spartacus at all. A cultural icon has gone!
Next I opened it up and it was a joke with all the other European logos on the disc art as well - felt more like something you'd pick up at a chemical engineering marketing conference than actually buy.

Don't know how the other new ones come across now. The older 15 and 18 were hideously loud but iconic. The 12 has always been a lot of clutter to me with its hysterical bloody 15 look - spoils so much artwork, and loudly eye fatiguing on rows of spines. Maybe the new 12 is an improvement but I'd hate to imagine rows of that orange circle on the spine.

There's definitely some recompositing here:

https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=2&x...1&l=0&i=3&go=1

(Absolutely not complaining by the way, just observing. I'm quite impressed by those reissues so far.)

This is a glorious upgrade. I'm so freakin' happy right now. From the thirty minutes or so i've seen of BTTF1, grain management has actually been done very well. I'm the first to shout at ham-fisted processing but this is not Disney leaving patches of frozen grain, waxy smoothness and weird-ass halos around things. 'Dis Universal. And they've seemingly found a sweet spot, keeping it looking very clean yet still textured and filmic. They've said they felt the need to do a little management so the HDR grade didn't play merry hell with the grain field and when the end result looks this good, then I can't complain. Judge not 'till you've seen in in motion....

Are you sure? I've seen a video showing the area this was filmed, and there were hills like that around.

I think it might just be from the better transfer and no edge enhancement done.

Also, damn, the upgrade is enormous with Part III, you can count every brick on the courthouse now.

Attention. members of Blu-ray.com

I've just seen Geoff D's reviews about this trilogy from the future and let me tell you:

(if I had better gif skills, I would put the members as the audience and Geoff as Marty)

As far as I'm concerned, this is very poor job for what 4K could offer. Four times sharper than Full HD? That is a bad joke.

The best part of your "example" is that you can see the thick black line from all the egregious edge enhancement outlining the edge of the paper. But you think that looks "better." That's all that needs to be said.

You also assume that every single shot in a film will be "4x" sharper, which mean you don't understand film or how movies are shot, or film stock in general and how it presents an image.

I would release things only in case I have source good enough to utilize the given format.
So there would be no 35 mm titles from mid 90's and older on UHD. Yay!

To whine about movies being available in the best possible quality? Some people must be really bored.

Perfectly happy with detecting macro blocking the size of my fist when projecting from Netflix, so nuke the whole format.

When I see the difference between BD and 4K for this edition, I can't image a difference between 4k and 8k.

Some films genuinely would never benefit from 8K and The Wizard of Oz is a good example. If you compare the 2K and 4K versions both made with the 8K transfer, they are actually not terribly different.

The grain is far more refined, as it is with most native 4K encodes, but really there is only a slight bump in clarity, which is likely just from the increased bit rate, as some details can get lost on a 2K version just from the low bit rate not being able to handle the grain and fine details at the same time.

I snuck in a viewing of the first film before I had to go to work, I been thinking about what I'm gonna say all day. There are many pluses, a few minuses (eh, it's Universal + Bob Gale, whaddayagonnado?), but good lord I enjoyed the shit out of the UHD. Full write up later, probably not today as I want to do some comparing with the previous editions first and double check a few things on the UHD.

I will mention the sound here though, I don't do surround but even with the Atmos downmixed to PCM 5.1 and piped thru mah TV it sounded fantastic, not in a "it was made yesterday" kinda way as they've kept most of the OG audio effects intact so you still get that classic mid-80s stock library feel to the foley and effects, but it's so 'open' and atmospheric with it. If anything the ADR'd dialogue sounds more disembodied than ever, but there's no fixing that.

looking at pics it seems uneven
part 3 which supposedly has less grain and was shot on less grainy shot apparently shows natural grain in sky here:
https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=2&x...1&l=0&i=3&go=1

but then there are some caps from the supposedly grainier part 1 that have sky that is like 1 tone smooth for large chunks and looks way over-managed
