The interesting part is that Universal also will release some other Movie Cash + Blu-ray releases on the same day. Can it be that those are also headed for a 4K UHD release? The titles in question are:
  • Van Helsing
  • The Scorpion King
  • Jurassic World
  • Dracula Untold
I don't think one correlates with the other. Universal are pimping their Mummy/Dracula related properties because of the tie-in with the release of the new Mummy movie and its "extended monster universe" or whatever they're calling it.

As for Jurassic World, that's the outlier but hey, it's got monsters in it after a fashion. I fully expect to get some sort of Jurassic UHD onslaught when the new movie is released.

Jurassic World 2 just started filming yesterday. I would expect a box set around the time that comes out next year.

Well, if they do a Jurassic Park boxed set, they better do something about the first film. That's all I'll say about that.

But as far as Jurassic World... man. If that hits now, or even at that point, I'm all over it. It already looks amazing on Blu-ray but I just know it'll look amazing in 4K, especially with HDR. Seeing the likes of The Mummy and Gladiator and hearing mention of Braveheart... if they get some Jurassic Park stuff going on this format I'm going to be super glad I got in semi-early.

I'm not really excited for The Wolverine because I assume the UHD will be the theatrical cut only and I'm never going back to that cut again.

Knowing Universal a Jurassic Park UHD would use the old DVD master instead of fixing the 3D master for 2D display.

Agreed. If they can't offer both versions they are just throwing away sales. I didn't buy XM: DOFP and Watchmen because they didn't have my preferred cut. The Wolverine will have the same fate if they don't include the extended.

Question: Is Oscar Bait a 4K or 2K movie release?

Well, with any luck the movie was restored in 4K before doing the 3D conversion which is what added the dirt-brown colour, DNR, rotoscoped hairdos and whatnot. Some folks believe the proper 2D restored master has been shown on TV in Europe somewhere. And I can tell you for a fact that the new transfer of Top Gun has been shown on TV over here in glorious 2D as I saw it with my own eyes. (I know that's a different studio but still, usual practice is to restore the movie first and then do the 3D stuff to it.)

Here's hoping. Either way, that release is too far off for my radar so, I won't stress about it.

Yet.

I was actually referring to the original X-Men Trilogy coming out later on. The new skus mentioned in the OP are definitely for Logan Fandango cash.

Wow, I guess everyone knows what the conversation is around the water cooler today.

Anyway, the irony is, from a few days before the Oscars, for those locals who got to see this full interview (i.e. 'what would happen IF there was a mistake')…that interview really proved to be an omen of things to come….
http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/lo...370352811.html

Maybe NBC LA will run the interview again as a retrospective.

That none of the best picture nominees had a 4k finish. And only a handful of 4k films got any sort of nomination, but no winners.

Look for it and the other films when JW 2 hits theaters.

However, the older films need serious work and it may take Spielberg to demand that Universal master them correctly. Otherwise, you may see another Bourne Identity f up.
