And for most movies, the IMAX presentation is merely open matte version of the scope framing.

Best use of IMAX AR and 3D is Tron: Legacy. The point where the main character goes from the real world to the digital world. Great experience
![]() I have a 100” projection screen at home and IMAX scenes look wonderful on it. I saw Avengers IW & Endgame in IMAX only. Going by the regular “I want the theatrical version” rants that are posted here occasionally is it too much too ask the same thing? Even the directors say it is the intended aspect ratio. (Maybe IMAX made them say that ![]() |

Not all IMAX aspect ratio changes or alterations are at the behest of the directors and DP's. Sometimes the studio dictates these things for... you know... more ticket profits. |

![]() Technically, yes. The home version of DTS: X can only go to 7.1.4. DTS: X Pro (coming this year) is only really an upmixer so it will spread the track to more speakers using matrix steering. A fully functional Dolby Atmos track for the home can render to 24.1.10 discretely using positional audio objects. |

You worry too much what DP thinks or has to say. It’s irrelevant.

If it's "intended" for it to be seen in 1.90:1, then the movie will be produced in 1.90 or 1.85:1 in standard cinemas.
If it was intended to be seen in IMAX, then the world premiere should be in IMAX, not in Dolby Cinema, with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, in 2.39:1, and in 2D, which is far superior than what IMAX with a silly different TV aspect ratio can achieve. Everytime you see or hear the filmmakers say IMAX is the way it's intended, make sure it's not from IMAX's YouTube channel or social media page. Because that's what they're obligated to say. |

That said, the Russo Brothers are aware of the Blu-rays not having the IMAX ratio.

I don't even like Dolby Atmos for Home Cinema, I've watched several movies on Dolby Atmos at a friend's that's quite wealthy and I didn't like it, I found it distracting. For my Home cinema room I like 7.1 but I have limited space so I only have space for 5.1 speakers. Fortunately my Pioneer SC LX-76 receiver does a great job at creating a "virtual" rear speakers. But I'll be recently moving to a new apartment si I'll see if I can add two more speakers to have real 7.1. |

It really depends on speaker angles. If you can fit within the ~30 degree separation then you can do it. You could do 7.1.6 in a less deep room with no back surrounds and Front Wides instead (given the right processor) and have Front and Rear Heights and Top Middles. I would say a good 80-85% of home Atmos mixes are not encoded as fixed print-outs. The bulk of them seem to come from Disney with a smattering of other studios with the odd fixed encoding. Paramount's Saving Private Ryan, for instance, was only encoded with the 9.1 (7.1.2) bed speakers. Some of it may have to do with the fact that certain audio engineers for the cinema are mixing with the idea that the surrounds and overheads will array when sent to the bed channels (not objects) with key sound effects and/or music effects spreading throughout the auditorium speaker system automatically. In the near field home mix process that doesn't get changed for the home Atmos remix, which seemingly cannot array surround and overhead bed channels unless those bed channel effects are switched over to objects in the Pro Tools Atmos session and flipped to the maximum object size setting, so they continue to be arrayed and spread around in a home Atmos setup. That way the immersive sound at home on >7.1.4 systems comes across as spotty at best and localized to a limited amount of speakers, when in the cinema the sound would have blared out of all or most all of the stereo bed pairs. |
