That's because it is. The 35th blu was a 4k negative scan supervised by Cundey, so why would they do an entirely new scan and grading when they just did one? There's zero speculation they would do a complete neg scan and complete color grade at anything other than 4K just a couple of years ago, with the knowledge they would eventually release it in 4K.

Is the 4K restoration the exact same master? Nah. Could they have re-used the raw scans from the 35th, if they had been archived? Maybe. If they had started with those from the ground up in 4K space then that would certainly count as a "new 4K restoration" and not an "upscale" as some people have so blithely assumed. I've already made note of the fact that there's printed-in dirt in some of the location titles on the 4K transfer that were erased for the 35th but are now back again, and the two sets of title sequences have very different geometry, along with the slight overall change in geometry for the rest of the movie. |

I thought it was a 2K scan and even mentioned that a few times here before, but admitted my error when I dug that release out and noticed 'HD'. But I really wonder now. To be honest, claiming an 'HD master' in 2013 stands out like a sore thumb. Everything claimed either 2K or 4K at that point. The last time I really read packaging that mentioned 'HD' rather than '2K' were on DVD releases in the early '00s...
Still thinking it is from same restoration. It looks too similar.if there is print damage visible that isnt on the BD, then perhaps it is like Evil Dead where it looks to be from same scan but without later touch ups... Slight stretching doesnt hold much water to me because that happens all the time. T2 stretching on some releases but not others, for example. |

I noticed in a couple of caps the 4k version has some chroma issues, maybe due to contrast boosting? Take a lpok all around Loomis there is all sorts of prominent red and blue color fringing or CA that is minimal or absent in the 35th blu:

It's there in all previous editions, you may only be seeing it now because the superior clarity and detail of the UHD makes it more noticeable. |

It coincided with a release of the first DCP of the movie touted as 4k at the time. I do remember it was given very limited release with 4k being mentioned and thinking at the time, well there's our answer.
Never heard 2k mentioned in relation to it at the time. However I also remember some commentators at the time saying the DCP they saw turned out to be a disappointment and that it didn't seem as big an upgrade as the blu ray did. Last edited by Martoto; 10-22-2018 at 08:54 AM. |

The wife and I watched for the first time The Halloween 4K Blu ray and this is what I came away with. As far as PQ is concerned? I think it was very good and I liked how it looked natural and not over blown. Is it better then the 35th Anniversary Edition? In my humble opinion yes. As for the audio? I had no issues with it but I didnt have any issues with the audio on the 35th Anniversary Edition either so. Is this the definitive and best version of the original classic ever? Its a tie between this and the 35th Anniversary Edition in my opinion. You cant go wrong with either one honestly. Now will I double dip again if they re-release it saying it's better then the 4K or 35th Anni disc? Nope! As far as Halloween is concerned I'm done. My 4K copy is it. That being said I enjoyed what I saw and heard with the new 4K release.

I felt the UHD BD was an improvement over the 35th ann BD. A bit better detail, grain, and color rendition. With that said, if this disc had turned out to be problematic or if I were stuck on the original mono, I would lose no sleep over the 35th ann BD. However, I had no problem with the UHD BD audio.
