I finally cracked this one open tonight. I can't believe how many times I got the chills watching this. You'd think I'd never seen this before. It looked and sounded great. It's still such a terrific movie. One oddball occurence was somehow it defaulted to DV after I took a break and restarted it. Odd because I have a Cambridge CXUHD and a Sony Z9D and the CXUHD hasn't had it's low latency DV firmware update yet. |

Specifically wondering how you feel about the quality of the 3d and any issues with motion when watching sports or discs with fast action... or any other big pluses or minuses you would give...thanks in advance!! PS Glad you love the movie!! Last edited by philsfan; 11-09-2018 at 02:32 AM. |

Best TV I've ever owned. The 3d is terrific (it might be the last flagship to have 3D). I've heard some people say they've witnessed motion issues but I haven't. I don't game with it and I don't have the best eyes so take that with a grain of salt. I've seen the latest pricing on the 65" Z and it's an absolute steal that you should strongly consider if you're in the market for a TV.
As for Superman I'd forgotten how great the score is. It will never be surpassed by any another comic book movie ever. So proud of a couple of Cleveland boys bringing one of the greatest fictional characters to life. ![]() ![]() Last edited by RalphoR; 11-09-2018 at 03:02 AM. |

The majestic score of John Williams definitely gets you going and can't wait to watch. The DCEU needs to learn that. |

I love the Williams score but Man of Steel was not beholden to the past like Returns was and it gave us Zimmer's score which I love equally so I for one am glad it wasn't used in that movie. If I was a director I would have wanted something new too. Trying to play the nostalgia card does not work all the time, you only have to listen to Elfman's soulless Justice League score for proof of that.

The review was almost painful to read, more interested in pointing out plot holes and moaning about the state of comic movies of today. Came across like a grumpy old man.
Not saying any movie is beyond criticism but the reviews on this site are taking a real nosedive in quality of late (and I'm not just saying that because I disagree with the reviewers opinions). |

One dull looking scene that comes to mind is when Jor-El and the council members are talking about the destruction of Krypton. The skin tones looked grayish, flat. I absolutely love the DD 5.1 soundtrack from original elements, my favorite part of this release.

The Atmos is based off of the prior 5.1 Special Edition remix dating from 2001 where they redid the whole thing from scratch because they felt the existing stems weren't of very good quality, and DVD producer Michael Thau said that they didn't have any discrete music stems to work with. In other words they replaced the sound effects in their entirety and also used a different master for the music, about the only thing that's original is the dialogue. Forget what some might have said about this Atmos somehow being more reverential than the previous 5.1 because it's not, it's that same mix and then some. |

Interestingly, I just showed Superman Returns to my wife two nights ago after discovering that she'd never seen it before and, at least for me, time has been exceedingly kind to it. Now that Man of Steel, Batman v Superman and Justice League are behind us, Returns has kind of been forgotten as that reboot/sequel that just didn't work. My main gripe with Returns continues to be its (lack of) color palette. Some of the cinematography there is phenomenal, and some of the shots truly artistic, but the film is just plain dull and ugly to look at. That said, if you haven't watched it in a long time (as I hadn't), give it another go. It SO had its heart in the right place, and it breaks mine a little bit that the EXACT right approach it had (and admittedly flawed execution) gave us a movie like Man of Steel instead. Returns is comparatively sentimental, quiet, beautiful and sweet. Ironically, with the passage of time, it has now become *part* of the very nostalgia it was attempting to evoke in 2006. Interesting how that happens. For me, it went from a weak ** film to a strong *** film.

I don't like the softened lens look, but it's not my film. There's a brief shot or two of the Statue of Liberty which is typical 35mm and it stands out as if it was shot with an Arri Alexa! I do love the score, the opening credit, and a number of the scenes with Kent in the newsroom and Lex with Otis. Reeve is simply amazing!! The whole chopper sequence is fantastic. The special effects have aged. Far more so than 2001 (1968). |

I agree on this. The only movie scores I listen to as much as Superman are The Sound of Music, Grease, and any Bernard Herrmann/Jerome Moross score from a Harryhausen film.

You watch the trailer and you've basically heard the entire score, minus the variations throughout the movie. It's so blandly generic and if you play it by itself to most people they would not be able to identify where it came from, you might get "that sounds familiar" at best. Contrast that to Williams Superman themes - which even to this day is identifiable to the character. |
