But I agree, if you've misheard what Laurie's has said then his response could be misconstrued, and could seem to confirm a different reading of Laurie's line. That's the ambiguity of language, often we infer meaning by context and still get it wrong. And I suppose, when you've have heard a line a certain way for so many years its very hard to unhear it. |

Growing up I always knew she said, "it was the boogeyman," with a kind of silent "it" but I always thought she was asking a question like, "it was the boogeyman?" It wasn't until the DVD that I realized she was making a statement and the residue of that former belief could be influencing my interpretation of Donald Pleasence's tone.

I had always believed the line to be "What's the bogeyman?" for the longest time. I just took it as Laurie echoing the very same question that Tommy had asked her earlier in the evening.

“What’s the boogeyman?” “As a matter of fact, that was” would’ve been the normal way of answering that question had she asked it. But it’s a really strange question. The only alternative line I can think of that makes sense is “Was that the boogeyman?” And this is exactly what Laurie says in Rob Zombie’s Halloween. |

I preordered all of the upcoming Halloween movie 4ks from amazon, but I am wondering if it will be really worth double dipping on these. I already own these movies on the deluxe blu ray box set, plus I own the first 4k release of the original , and the remastered steelbooks of Halloween 2 and 3. The way I see it, Halloween 4 seems to be the only one needing a new release.

I think "Was it the boogeyman?" as a question would have been more fitting for his response but, meh. They both work.
To me, "What's the boogeyman", which for years I thought the line went, was more like Jamie blended the words "was" and "it" to sound like "what's." Just watched again, and she definitely says "It was the boogeyman" as a statement, not a question. Kev |

I had the boogeyman debate for years and years.
As a kid and for years, I heard "What's the boogeyman?". It made no sense at all but that's what it sounds like. Then I thought maybe she said "Was it the boogeyman?" because that would make sense since she denied it and she's asking Loomis. It just sounded like she said it fast and in a distressed manner. Then eventually when DVD came out, I finally close captioned it (and all versions since) and it says "It was the boogeyman...". You can hear it but it's almost like she combines it and was. Then Loomis confirms it to her. How she means it is also important. It reminds me of Taxi Driver when they they debate the "We are the people" and "We ARE the people". They are the same sentence but they convey a different meaning. Laurie is just telling Loomis "It was the boogyeman...." almost like a little kid telling the first person they see what they saw. Man, we are complete psychos but this is important stuff. |

It’s objectively “it was the boogeyman” whether you can hear it or not. To me, it always sounded like the audio is cut off for a millisecond and she said “T’was the boogeyman”

I'm sure there was more than one take, this was just the one he liked best.
