For the Shout 4K UHD release of the film, they used a digital source created in 1999 from Anchor Bay & Chase Productions using the same master tape. The difference is Chace added excessive and unnecessary processing to the mix (Noise Reduction, Compression/Limiting and bad EQ choices like High Pass Filtering). Criterion's transfer is most likely more faithful to the source, it sounds like little to nothing was done other than a straight A/D conversion. |

The mixes can be fixed, one can be done very affordably and most likely in 1 work day (new A/D transfer of the mono mix). The other would be a huge undertaking in cost, labour and time (new surround mix) and no label will be interested in doing that when they think the work from 1999 was satisfactory. You should be able to search and find the Criterion Laserdisc Mono Mix very easily if you want a better audio source. And if you want the company to address the mix in a future release, contact Shout Factory. I sent them an email regarding the mono mix and they replied back stating that they will address this issue the next time they release the film and that they appreciate feedback and take all comments into consideration to help with compiling future releases. I just hope that they will follow through and obtain a better sounding source for the next time. |

I just got off the phone with my son. To his shock, I asked him to put THE SEASON OF THE WITCH disc from the box set in to our upstairs player. I didn't ask him to watch any of it, but he confirmed that it played and he was able to select the movie. After all the crap I've done to that disc it works..
Yesterday, I looked at my new 4K discs for parts 1,2 and 4. They all had scratches on them. I have no idea if they showed up that way or whether I messed them up myself. I've watched part 1 twice, part 2 once and got halfway through part 4 before deciding that this is no longer my favourite timeline. I get that some of you are concerned about long term playability but for me, this just isn't an issue. While I'd go mental if my new disc was too glitchy to play right out of the box because of an initial scratch, I've come to realize that there will never be a last time I purchase the original. I usually cart off a bunch of old discs to the local thrift shop for donation but as it stands, I currently have the 40th anniversary disc (played once), the box set version (played twice, maybe 3 times) and this new UHD. I'm keeping the boxset because I'll never buy anything from part 5 onward again. The 4K of part 4 will be the last time I buy that title. I'll probably upgrade the Zombie entries when they hit 4K and the new trilogy. |

despite all that has been said about the audio shortcomings of the various releases of Halloween, especially dvd/blu ray era, the answer to that is still yes if you strip it down to the source elements then that is what there is to work with for all releases of the movie I would say season of the witch had better audio everything (actual better not just better better) .. more expensive mics, better tech in general (it came out later), bigger budget. So yes the source elements are going to be of higher quality which would result in a more substantial, bigger sound. yes more juice! A great descriptive word by the way |

I heard one of the reasons why the Dolby Vision is very much worth your time, is the colour timing of movie was tweaked.

Did you update the firmware on your 820? There was a recent update pushed to Panasonic 4K players to fix flickering issues with Dolby Vision.

Looks like my preferences are going to end up being H1 Shout 4K, H2 Shout 2021 BD, H3 Shout 4K. With H2, a tradeoff of glitches vs a bit less detail and less sharp grain.

By a different company? Perhaps. Koch in Italy put out a 1-8 box set that utilized most of the features from Shout's sets, for example. |

What glitches are so bad that you would rather watch the Blu-ray version of the movie as apposed to the Ultra HD Version?
