That sign is surrounded by green shrubbery, naturally the light bouncing off from the shrubbery influences the color; that and it was shot during high clouds that day (no direct sunlight) which also effects recorded color shot onto daylight film.

There are no "issues" with this release. Nothing is gonna be perfect unless you master your own disc. Everyone has different crazy standards. There is probably a reason to not buy almost every disc ever made. I haven't even noticed "bad compression" on a playing disc since DVD, so when someone says "bad/poor compression" I expect them to be staring at screen grabs blown up in Photoshop, which means very little when a film is in motion from my experience. I suppose if you're watching on 100 foot screens you may have a valid point, but realize you're 0.1% of disc watchers. I recall the Criterion My Own Private Idaho had this complaint, and it would have never crossed my mind had I not seen a thread here harping on it. My own complaints about this Shout disc is the "poor" mono audio (come @ me bro) and that's really it. But considering I think the Atmos is fantastic, I can live with it. Though with that said, if you love Halloween and you don't own this set yet what are you doing in life?

Buy some Severin discs like The Devil’s Honey to break that streak

The compression on these Shout Halloween 4ks are horribly bad. Whether some care or not is up to them. But it's far below par, and it does affect the image. The new masters themselves are gorgeous.

I'm not going to deny this, but where are you seeing the evidence of this? How big of a screen do you use? Or did you see evidence of this on a PC under "lab" conditions? I've watched this set twice now and don't see any macroblocking or compression issues, if I'm not seeing anything wrong then it must just fly under my radar and I'm grateful. I'm also not going to shine a metaphorical black light on things to get a better look. "Horribly bad" sounds pretty subjective, by which standards? And compared to what? I honestly see the same members here say these kinds of things about releases from almost every larger studio on planet Earth: Kino, Shout, Arrow, Lionsgate, Studio Canal, Criterion, all except maybe Sony and Disney (but apparently Disney wiffs on sound). So is everyone just inept besides them? Or do you lot just like to complain and be critical about everything? I don't have a problem with critiques at all, but at a certain point that level of "hard to please" becomes a meme to me.

I'm also not trying to fan a fire on this, but I just think it's a bit silly sometimes when you have to realize 97% of people aren't going to notice what you're noticing on these discs. I mean I actually see people in the Halloween II thread defending the "pixel gate" thing saying it isn't a big deal, likewise the Explorers thread had plenty of people saying the geometry issue wasn't a big deal and to move on. Now in both those instances I could see those errors plain as day, so I get the other side of it, and don't agree it's a small deal on those two discs. But "horribly bad" compression on these discs, I just don't see it.

Scream 4K

Pros:
Fantastic transfer
Real mono track
Correct aspect ratio

Cons:
Crap encode

Lionsgate 4K

Pros:
Solid encode

Cons:
Dull transfer
No mono
Inconsistent aspect ratio

The choice was pretty easy for me. Hopefully Arrow or Second Sight can give this the definitive treatment.

The Shite, sorry, Shout encode is sooo bad. The Dobly corrects it some but it still has some of the worst macroblocking I’ve seen in a long time.

I haven't voted but everything outside of the encode looks better on the new one. It only gets downright ugly in spots, but the rest while not great isn't bad enough to make a huge deal about (IMO of course). The color correction is so much better here, and that likely accounts for the 300+ you've mentioned. I don't think anyone is going to argue that the encode is better on this one than the last.

Enjoying the 35th Anniversary Blu-ray, and ignoring someone's arrogance. That's what I'm doing, anyway.

Look at the siding of the house near the start of the film and look at the sky in any day shot. It's patchy artifacts in a sea of solid blue.

I don't remember, but I did think the UHD looked better than the BD, but that is because it looked more detailed. The only of the first 3 I would rather watch on BD is the second film. Almost no detail difference and it lacks the blocky breakdowns in the scalding scene.

If we're going to start giving passes to all the studios and publishers that release 4k discs with this level of compression, I have to wonder what the point of UHD even is? I thought it was clearly meant for video enthusiasts who wanted the absolute best, cutting-edge video quality available. If that's true, then these discs fall far below that in terms of encoding. As I said, the masters are great. But that doesn't excuse the lousy disc authoring.

We should be expecting better than this from this format. I know this because we've seen better. Much better. So what's Shout's excuse?
