Holy smokes!

Nice review Geoff, and thanks for the pics. The shots you show really do highlight the differences.

Honestly, I think the BD looks great, but when compared to the UHD, I sincerely feel (based on your screenshots) that the HDR pass was used to GREAT effect here.

Nothing looked blown out, and that seemed to add to the level of visible detail in a way that I found quite pleasing (and shocking in a good way). In fact, I was really "wow'd" by it, as I didn't expect such a nice upgrade. It's beautiful man.

In regards to the small bit of re-framing...eh, this movie's been re-framed more times than my elementary school pictures. Pretty much any framing would have to be considered perfectly fine on this disc.

I am curious to hear more about the audio track speed however, if you (or anybody) would like to expand on that, I would be all ears.

The audio sounds a bit larger and deeper. I thought it was an improvement.

Not a giant uptick in video but I could notice the improvements quickly.
The HDR is used very well, the contrast levels give everything a bit more pop.

I noticed a few moments of odd grain when its on a white background (kind of like the reviewer pointed out). But it really wasn't often enough to bother me much.

I was on the fence for getting this, but overall it's worth the upgrade and a bigger improvement than expected in detail, color & contrast. Not to mention audio.

Yes indeedy. Very short movie, only two main audio tracks + commentary, no other video-based extras, and the movie itself is in 1.33 so those black borders either side are helping with the bitrate too (less image to encode). It doesn't fill the 66GB disc but with an average bitrate of 68 Mb/s that spikes way above that and what - to my eyes, anyway - looks like a terrific encode it didn't need more than this.

Detail too, it really is a wash apart from those wider shots like the very last one of Ash outside the cabin, and even then a lot of the detail on the branches against the sky is revealed because of the range, not the resolution.

Not a revolution then, but a definite refinement (caps don't show just how much more luscious the grain looks in motion from one to the other) and it's a disc all Deadheads should try and see for themselves.

This stuff is neat, and that white wall paneling really does show off a lot more detail in the bright whites on the UHD. However I really think it's something subtle enough that it's hard to notice without direct comparison like you do. That's why I veer much more toward contrast and depth being the main HDR improvements, rather than added highlights. They add a more consistent and casually noticeable upgrade IMO. I know you love 'dem highlights though.

But they're also what helps to create the depth, where do you think it comes from when watching HDR? It's not like "depth" is there on the spec sheet.

Finally got my hands on this today. Took a trip down across the US border, and had a pretty great day finding 4K titles. Evil Dead, Step Brothers, Hook, American Psycho, the two Punisher flicks... basically all the Lionsgate/Sony titles that can sometimes be problematic finding in Canada.

Hook was the biggest surprise, as the none of the stores I tend to visit in the Niagara Falls area (Walmart, Target, Best Buy) listed it as being available, but fortunately Walmart came through. Guess I won't have to order it online or wait for Bay Street Video to get it, after all.

When I say "depth" I mean stuff like the darker/light play in the jungles of Predator making the jungle look more textured and real. I guess "depth" is a shitty catch-all word (and I've seen 3D fans mock our use of that term for HDR), but it's decent shorthand. You're right of course that the added highlights are part of that same contrast and texture improvement. I'm just saying which part of it I prioritize I guess.

It's cool when you point out the added highlight detail though, since it's something I don't consciously notice.

It's all the same market, Velvs. I post those images because highlight range is part of the UHD package whether you appreciate it or not, and because it's one of the few things I can capture at a reasonable enough level of transparency to actually SHOW what HDR is doing. Black levels are tricky in photos, colour can also be tricky, but highlights are easy enough to show off in a quick pic. They're not my be-all and end-all, hence my lengthy comments usually encompassing all such aspects of a UHD transfer. Some movies don't extend the highlights much, if at all, and yet I think they look great all the same.
