Is yours the only tv that can do that? I’m sure my tv can only reach peak brightness of a 1000 nits. I take it 4000 or 5000 is more peak brightness than my tele could handle. Does that mean the Meg on 4k would be too much for my tv to handle? Have I got that right?

My TV does nowhere near that kind of peak brightness, I'm saying that I can use other picture modes to deliver a tone mapping that extends to showing 4000 or 5000 nits worth of highlight information, NOT the brightness itself.
You're better off disregarding that post anyway as I realised soon after that DV wasn't the saviour it was made out to be after all. In any case, I've no idea how The Meg will look on your TV, it's an HDR torture test for sure though.
Well now I'm really interested to see this on my KS8000, since it resolves up to 6,000 nits on test patterns.
Hi, how can your tv resolve up to 6000 nits? I have the U.K equivalent the 7000 and it can only reach a peak brightness of 1000 nits.
By the sounds of it Geoff can adjust his tv to handle 4000/5000 nits if I understood what he was saying. Do you know if our tv’s can be manually adjusted? My knowledge only goes so far! I’m still trying to learn! Lol.
How well did your tv cope with the meg 4k disc. Did you have to fiddle with it in regards the brightness/clipping or did the tv just "cope"?

The Meg wasnt on my radar until tonight. I never saw it at the cinema and a work colleague brought the dvd into work for us to watch. But I decided not to watch it as I’m a bit of a snob now about watching dvds. I came to the thread to see what the 4k was like. I’m tempted to buy it and watch it in all its 4k hdr loveliness now and when I read about the brightness I naturally wondered if my tv could deliver a top picture.
It is ultra bright and at the same time some scenes can appear washed out but it is not King Kong as all you surroundings are limited to miles of sea and skies
This looked pretty damn great... once I dropped the brightness on my player's settings down by three clicks. Audio also sounded nice... once I remembered to switch to the Atmos track. Fun movie, liked it more than I did in theaters. Only bought it thanks to an incorrect BB shelf tag that had the Steelbook for $14.99.
Pretty late to the party in terms of taking a closer look at the HDR10 and the DV for this was able to compare how it looked on the lg c6 and sony 930e using an oppo 203 player. Quick settings out the way first, nothing scientifically calibrated on both TV's was using just the generic presets with all the post processing stuff disabled - cinema pro hdr10 and dv preset for the 930e, and hdr standard and dv dark for the lg c6.
HDR10 on the C6 looks flatout broken for this one, most if not all of the daytime skies and brighter areas (such as background windows) that contain highlight detail in the standard 2d and 3d versions look terribly clipped and washed out in hdr10 on the c6, there is an improvement with the hdr10 quality on the 930e which makes sense since the TV contains moar nits than the c6 but even then it still looks a bit off in certain scenes.
And then there was DV, it practically fixes all of the problems that hdr10 was having with the highlight detail on both the LG and Sony. It's weird because there usually isn't such a dramatic difference between hdr10 and dv from what I've seen so far on my end but for this particular title, there is, DV or bust.
I can totally see how some will absolutely prefer the standard 2d/3d version of Meg if they are not dv capable and or their TVs are clipping whites in hdr10, the UHD is practically unwatchable for me in that sense. I also enjoy how the 3d bd version looks on the c6 but at the end of the day I slightly prefer the DV UHD for this one whether it be on the c6 or 930e.
EDIT: As for the movie itself, had already watched it a while back. It was good dumb fun, family and I enjoyed it overall.

Yep. This flick has quite a small amount of range parked into the upper end of like four thousand nits, so even if a tone mapper think it's doing good by, say, throwing everything away above 1000 nits it's going to look clipped AF. Even the HDR Optimiser on the Panasonic players is caught out by this, it clips some shots.
As you say, for most titles the DV vs HDR10 thing is a bust if you have a TV that's capable of competently handling HDR10 (aside from what FEL DV does to rein in poor compression on the base layer, which is independent of the differences in tone mapping and/or grading), but for The Meg the dynamic tone mapping is essential.
I thought this was quite entertaining. Watched it with the kids. The sound and video was very good. Not a movie you are going to enjoy if you watch it on a small tv without the Atmos. Sounded amazing with the 2 SVS Ultra 16 subs. The HDR 10 looked great. This is definitely one of those movies where big screen and Atmos definitely help. Although I do agree some of the scenes outside can look very artificial.
