I mean they're all better on UHD, but if you're not super picky and don't want to pay up it's the remasters for 1 and 2 that are most important, by far.
Just watched Mission Impossible 2 for the first time in years and loved it just as much as when I saw it in the theater 19 years ago.
I know it has the "lowest rating" among fans/critics (psssh), but for my money, it's my favorite one in the whole series. I personally enjoy the John Woo style of directing and I also enjoyed not seeing Simon Pegg in the movie (John Polson was in it along with Ving Rhames).
Regarding the 4K UHD, it's a MASSIVE upgrade on the Blu-Ray. Wowzers.

At the moment, I'm mostly curious about Ghost Protocol, as that's the only one I have both the UHD and old BD of. I know it's not the same physical disc, since the original release had both the movie and special features on one disc, and this one splits up the Blu-ray movie and special features onto two discs.

It was released back in 2000, so I was 15 at the time, and after having been such a big fan of M:I 1 (I actually only saw I-III in the theaters). I just remember being in awe of the action of the film, the moment the music starts playing with the Paramount logo and the quick tempo picks up, I knew it was a such a major departure from the first film. Then, I just went with it. I was a 15 year old, who quite frankly, didn't know any better and just didn't really have an understanding in terms of films and plots, acting, etc. If it had action, I was in no matter what lol. Thandie Newton, I had a massive crush on her too, seeing her on screen was a joy and watching Cruise do all his usual action sequences was pure fun. Total ridiculousness of course (that final scene when Cruise kicks the gun up). This clearly was John Woo doing what John Woo does, and he didn't hold back.
Now looking back I have to laugh. It's like wow, I enjoyed that? What the hell was I thinking. But you know what, I still do enjoy it when I watch it exactly because of the memories it brings back for me at a very different time of my life. It also reminds me of how these films have improved so much from then on, how M:I III, Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation were fantastic when I was fully expecting train wrecks because I thought they were just dragging this series way too long.
And lets not forget, Hans Zimmer did an amazing job with the score for M:I II, that still resonates with me as well.
Damn right. I have to say I love MI:2, from its sumptuous visuals to Zimmer’s incredible score. Robert Towne of Chinatown fame wrote the script and it’s full of zingers. Hopkins is the best MI boss, Thandie Newton is SMOKING and Woo goes all out on his slo-mo balletic action porn.
I love the rock-climbing opening which weirdly features a new version of Iko Iko. Cruise and Zimmer used an earlier version of the song during the opening of Rain Man.
It’s basically the dumb blonde of the series. What it lacks in substance it more than compensates for in sensory delights.
Also, Cruise has much better chemistry with Newton than he subsequently did with Monaghan. I wish she’d stayed on to play his wife in the series.
As for the detail, the IMAX stuff looks incredible, like "holy shit Tom Cruise is about to come running out of my TV" incredible. I'm not being hyperbolic when I say that the IMAX stuff in this movie is quite possibly the sharpest 4K imagery I've yet seen on a UHD. Yes, Nolan's movies have a lot of IMAX but - you knew there had to be a 'but', anyone sensitive to Nolan bashing had best look away now - there's a tangible sense of sharpness here that pisses over any of Nolan's IMAX stuff as seen on UHD. They still look terrific for what they are, especially when parked next to such obviously filtered 35mm stuff as is in those movies, but because Nolan uses an interpositive for transfer it robs it of a sizeable chunk of resolving power versus the negative and even in IMAX that makes a hell of a difference. And there's only a trace of the flickering that progressively gets worse across Nolan's IMAX movies too, one would imagine that the DI helped to balance out the density flutter in GP's case.

This interesting. Can you explain to a complete noob why Nolan’s IMAX footage is inferior and why it flickers? What’s an ‘interpositive’?
