Another question for those more knowledgeable:

I decided to pull the trigger and get The Hobbit 4K set (was gonna snag LOTR but went out of stock on Walmart right before I put my order in). So I got The Hobbit coming, but I don’t own a 4K player or TV. But I see there’s a digital code you can redeem. So my questions are, is the digital code version the 4K version? And do I redeem the code on a specific site like Movies Anywhere? If I redeem it on Movies Anywhere, where can I watch it? Like Prime Video or iTunes, and can I download it to my computer even? And also, I’ll be watching it on my desktop PC that has a 1920x1080 monitor, and while I know I’m not getting the full experience of a crisp image and high def sound (I do have great speakers with a subwoofer though), will the movie still look more updated than the Blu-Ray releases? Thanks for answering my questions! I plan to upgrade my stuff in the future (was hoping to get a PS5 before the end of 2020 to use as my 4K player, but that doesn’t seem like it’ll happen...), but right now I just want to somewhat see the new restorations of my six favorite films.

A reminder about the digital code for this set (since this post is buried by now):

For redeeming the digital code, use MA redeem only right now!!! The Vudu redeem is redeeming HD. This may change at some point, but as usual, Vudu is not redeeming a bundle the proper way during release week (or weeks as it sometimes turns out to be).

You can redeem on MA for UHD, the service you're watching from will downgrade to HD or SD depending on what you're using to watch (what sort of device).

MA is a streaming service, but also a porting service. So you have to have iTunes and/or Prime connected to your MA account for the movies to "port" into those services. If connected, you can redeem in MA, and yes the movies will appear in those services.

So if I redeem the code from the 4K set it won’t have the same coloring or effects clean up like the 4K disc? I know some people were watching the iTunes version and it looked great. Like, would FotR have the green tint then?

Without a 4K TV If you redeem the digital in 4K, the video is going to down convert to 1080p resolution on your computer, so it will be the same as if you're watching the 1080p standard blu-ray. It won't be in 4K.

I don't know, I haven't gotten either set yet (neither Lord of the Ring nor Hobbit). For Lord of the Rings, the theatrical version has been on site for a while, and might still be the old green tint version. The extended might be the new scan. And like other new versions in the past, the HD version DOES get updated, IF you redeem the 4K code.

Again, I can't test as I don't have it, have not redeemed a code, and I haven't heard anyone report yet if the 4K code also gives access to the new HD scan.

That will depend on if that service updated the 1080p versions to the new transfer. iTunes has as previously reported but sometimes VUDU and other places retain the older 1080p transfer.

Yes but to get JUST the blurays it's Autumn.

Obviously he was asking how to get them and probably isn't going to buy the huge set by the question.

Watched the first Hobbit film and it was glorious on 4K/Atmos. Funny enough, they may be newer, but that 4K polish was awesome. Pay attention to those vistas and skylines. You can scoop up them up with a spoon!

I didn't have time to watch these in full, cause my Steelbook set came in today and I work the next few. But I just skimmed DOS and BOTFA UHD Extended Discs, and I'm wondering about the picture quality at times if some can check or explain to me, looked pixelated to me but for some it was only brief during movement, not exactly bad but it was obvious, like it wasn't sharper, just slightly pixelated. Saw it on Galadriel in BOTFA while she's glowing(Especially her eyes) and on The Nercromancer not even a minute later, clear as day. Is it the movie or is there something wrong? I never noticed it before. Thanks in advance!

Otherwise My "impressions" is the colors show tons of promise, and they improve on the old blu rays.

So i guess i should wait to redeem the codes for both Hobbit and LOTR? I usually put these into iTines so my old man can watch them all on his OLED and he wont stand for them to be in SDR lmao... spoiled rotten!

My impression after having seen the trilogy now in 4K is that it looks over sharpened rather than having higher resolution. Some scenes look good, some OK and a few look weird. Close ups of faces have artifacts which you get with low res or when you over sharpen stuff.
